Everyone was talking about my dreams--even though I hadn't told a single soul about them. Wherever I went, strangers were discussing my nocturnal visions. I wanted to chalk all of this up to coincidence, but then, only minutes after a chance encounter with a young woman I didn't know, after she told me in perfect detail of the dream I'd had the night before, she was killed. And I knew I'd have to figure out what was happening to me.
My only hope was a woman who had a knack for falling dead asleep. With help from Claire, a narcoleptic, I would have to take a sleep-journey into the past and future affecting everyone's life, including my own.
Some things to know about me--my name is Kevin Macy and I'm a partner in an ad agency in Boston, Massachusetts. I'm divorced, I smoke, and I'm an accomplished alcoholic. Not that it has anything to do with my story, but it's part of who I am. And in the course of reading about these supernatural and bizarre events, those things will factor in.
Another important note--and this you will have a hard time swallowing, I'm sure--while on this strange journey of discovery, I died. And I mean that in the realest of ways--dead as a door nail--bought the farm--kicked the bucket. You get the picture. Of course being dead didn't "stick," otherwise I wouldn't be able to tell you my curious tale.
DEAD ASLEEP rides the razor's edge between dreaming and wakeful states, the past and the future, and the lines between life and death.
Jennifer B. White is a masterful storyteller yet again in “Dead Asleep”, a book that is superbly written and equally compelling. No matter what you think you might learn from your analysis of your own dreams this book will totally enthrall and challenge you. This story will make you re-examine the connections in your life as well as your appreciation and gratitude for them all.
Kevin Macy tells us the story of his life as a divorced man who drinks and smokes to excess. He is a man who holds “things” as the real value in his life only to discover that his life is insignificant. We follow him on his spellbinding journey into the realm of “Dreamsharing” where his life unfolds as he searches for meaning. He meets Claire, a woman with narcolepsy, who appears to know and share Kevin's dreams. They feel a deep connection with each other despite the fact that they have only just met.
Kevin’s story will grab you and plunge you into his dream world. White has the amazing ability to define her characters in a way that enables you to feel their strong emotional upheaval which compels you forward as you become part of the story. Her characters are artfully crafted, well defined and intriguing.
The characters that Kevin encounters in his dreams reveal their own story in a poignant, thoughtful and compassionate way. You will be swept up in this book and immersed in the story encountering interesting characters with exceptional and unexpected plot twists along the way.
“Dead Asleep” is a book I would recommend to all readers.
I almost read this whole book in one sitting. It's the type of book that you curl up on the couch with with the simple intention of simply starting the book and before you know it, you've almost devoured the whole thing. The premise is really interesting and original. You have Kevin, a character whose life is sort of falling apart. His marriage is dissolving or maybe its already dissolved, Kevin doesn't seem to be quite sure himself as things seem to be going way too quickly for him to keep up. His ex-wife is already ready to get married again. Then you have Claire, a woman with narcolepsy, who seems to be able know all about Kevin's dreams. Add a cup of paranormal and a pinch of time travel and you have a great story to get sucked into.
This book was also another one where there are tons of twists and turns to keep the reader on their toes. I really thought that White did a fabulous job of getting into Kevin's head and showing the reader what he was feeling and what he was experiencing. I really liked that this book was told from the first person point of view as I think that it was so fun to see everything from Kevin's perspective.
Bottom line: Jennifer White is an author I'll be watching for more from!
Storytelling at it very best. This story sucked me in and wouldn't let me put it down. The voice of the characters draws you in like you're taking part in the story with them. Supernatural twists and turns keep you in suspense and hungry for MORE. You'll ask yourself, "What did I dream last night?"
Dead Asleep is a book that will have you questioning what you know about life, about death and that maybe nothing is ever just a coincidence.
Kevin Macy is sleep walking through his life. He has a successful business and a failed marriage to prove it. The one aspect that he is always unsure about is his dreams. He never stops to think about the people or situations that he experiences in them until he meets Claire. Claire is the quirky narcoleptic woman that he is sure that he has seen before. He has seen her in his dreams. This sets the two of them up on a mission of epic proportions. They uncover that there are others that are “dreamsharing” with them and that maybe they will be able to stop Kevin’s prophetic dream of his own death.
I loved that this book caused me to think so deeply about what I would do in the same predicament as the characters. It leads you through dream sequences that suggest that everyone is connected in some fundamental way and that even with the passage of time, those that leave a mark on your heart, are never really far from you.
White’s writing style is modern and smart. The characters are well rounded and the story line is precise and intricate. She best describes the very soul of the book itself with “We each know what it is to die. We know what it is to be in-between. And we know how special life is.” Dead Asleep is for dreamers everywhere.
