Arlene Kay is a mystery writer with a dark past. In another life, the author of INTRUSION (12-11), and DIE LAUGHING (12-12), was a Senior Executive with one of those alphabet agencies that strikes terror into the hearts of all Americans.
Since moving to Cape Cod, she abandoned government work to craft fiendishly clever mysteries with a touch of mayhem and a splash of romance. Her previous works include five novels in the Grace Quinn/Patrick Fong mystery series.
She recently completed SWANN DIVE (05-14); and MANTRAP (12-14); the first in her new Eja and Deming series featuring two intrepid sleuths who live the good life while vanquishing criminals in the very blue state of Massachusetts.
This was a great romantic thriller. Totally unpredictable and definitely very well written. The author does an excellent job of developing the heroine from an introverted widow to a vivacious crime-solving diva. Well, Betts is not a diva, but her partner Candy is. Yet together the two manage to sift through the maze of clues to find their best friend's murderer. The dialogue is spot on, with witty conversations taking place between Candy, Betts, and her romantic interest, Lucian. The prose in the book is beautiful, colorful metaphors and creative similies abound. Great plot. Great story. And even better characters that are unforgettable. Kudos for Intrusion!
Arlene Kay takes us on a fast-paced journey through the fascinating but greed-filled world of Boston bio-tech. The reluctant heroine is smart, but insecure, as she doggedly tries to discover the murderer of her best friend. Motives abound and everyone's a suspect, even the brilliant, wealthy and attractive man who is gradually capturing her heart. The style is sassy, the dialog witty and there's a turn of a phrase on every page that will make you smile.
I was about 1/2 way through this book when I realized that I wasn't enjoying it. The plot line kept my attention just enough to finish it so I could find out "who-done-it." I found the writing simplistic and the character development lacking. I doubt that I was the intended audience for this one. I'll have to be more discerning about which free Kindle books I read.
I would like to personally thank the author for giving me a copy of this book. I spent an entire day reading this book and it was absolutely excellent. I would really like other books from this author as this was such a great book. Thank you again for this.
i thought the story was good to read, but the writing was sometimes alittle "cliche" phrases such as "my headache buzzing like an angry bee" just came across as quite juvenile, but all in all it was a decent quick read, just perfect length for a bus ride or a long soak in the tub
Intricate plotting woven together with characters that come to life. Loved the Boston settings. Elizabeth Buckley and her sidekick are two of my favorites. The authors makes the story jump off the pages. It is a definite page turner. Not to be missed.
