Janette Rallison has five children who keep her well supplied with plot ideas, sometimes even making cameo appearances in her novels. She likes to write romantic comedy because there is enough angst in real life, but theres a drastic shortage on both humor and romance.

Playing the Field was named Society of School Librarians International Best Book Award Honor Book, and both Alls Fair In Love, War, and High School and Love, Life, and the Pursuit of Free Throws were included on YALSAs Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults list. Fame Glory, and Other Things on My To Do List, was just chosen for IRAs YA Choices list for 2007

Well, that was... different. Surprisingly easy to read, plus I always like to learn about new things (I didn't know anything about LDS). I understand there are two versions of the book. THIS one is about Holly, just turning 16 and thus entering the dating world and Emma, a newcomer to the Pullman High, who needs to figure out a lot of things in her life.

4.5 stars - I absolutely LOVE Janette Rallison. She always has a way of making her romantic comedies so fun that I can't help but smile or laugh and so cute that I can't help but want to jump up and down squealing. And this book did not disappoint.

Cassidy was such a great character. She was smart and down to earth, but she somehow get herself into situations that you can't help but shake your head. And I just loved HIM from the start. There was just something about him that just made you swoon, even before he became the object of affection.

My only complaint about the book is I felt the end was a bit too rushed. I was disappointed how things ended up because I was left gaping, saying, "What? That's it?"

Other than that, I would have to say Rallison does it again. I don't know how she does it, but she always manages to come up with these fun stories, and write such clever, witty dialogue to go with the story progression. Another great book that leaves you smiling.

I like Rallison writing. I have always laughed while reading her books. Some of the dates these poor teens went on! So great. This one did drag a little for me but over all I liked the characters and the lightness of the story line. This is a teen book with talk of drinking and drugs but all in a way to teach about life and it's hazards. I would give this to a 14 year old.

Ah, this book reminds me how much I love reading light, contemporary YA.

Blue Eyes and other Teenage Hazards follows Cassidy’s story after her best friend Anjie moved away. When the new family moves to Anjie’s house, she hopes that she will be nice, smart, funny, and not a typical drama queen. Well, Elise wasn’t exactly nice at first, but they finally find enough topics to talk about aside from Elise’s mourning of leaving California.

Elise was not the kind of girl Cassidy usually friends with. While Cassidy loves studying and is awkward around boys, Elise drinks alcohol, goes to parties, and determines to hate school although she has enough IQ that would let her run for Mensa president. Cassidy finds Elise fascinating and despite their differences, they become friends. Elise’s older brother, the cute blue-eyed Josh, is convinced that Cassidy is just the perfect friend to keep Elise in the right line. Cassidy will have to be able to make sure that Elise stay sober and in the same time find a way to get Josh to notice her in more than an immature sophomore.

This book is a fun, quick read. I seriously wouldn’t mind living inside the story. Cassidy is a smart and great character. She likes herself just the way she is and that makes me proud of her. Finally, a contemporary heroine who doesn’t yearn to be prettier/skinnier/wilder! That makes me want to give her an award for being the model heroine, really. Plus, I need to mention that Cassidy is smart! Smart girls who also manage to be nice, pretty, and still believable are rare. She doesn’t have any thrilling need to walk on the wild side and that’s just fine by me.

I really like Josh too. He is responsible and nice, the type of brother you would love to have. His relationship with Cassidy doesn’t feel forced at all. I can picture the conversations he has with Cassidy and Elise clearly because they just seem so natural. The whole story made me giggling all along and though there is hardly any life-changing moment, the story flows nicely and is true to life.

In overall, Blue and other Teenage Hazards is the kind of book that will leave you with smile on your face. I feel so old admitting this but I did find some of Cassidy’s problems match mine back in high school. I enjoyed reading this book and I loved how much I didn’t need to think much when I was reading it. No dramatic tears, no back-stabbing drama, no lack of self-respect. This is the kind of book you’d love reading in relaxing summer holiday, preferably in a hammock.

I wasn’t sure how much Carter had meant to her. She hadn’t seemed too attached to her boyfriend when she’d ogled Chad yesterday. But then, to see your friend kissing your boyfriend—and kissing him out in public where people could snap photos and send them to you—ouch. Low blow.

Hall mark should make sympathy cards for those sorts of occasions.

So, I liked this one. Big surprise, I like everything Janette Rallison writes. I do wish the romance had been more of the focus, but I’m just a romantic at heart. I liked Cassidy, I thought it was great that she stuck to who she was, she didn’t get peer-pressured into doing things she really didn’t want to do. I like that she saw the best in Elise and wanted to be a good friend to her. Elise learns some tough lessons, but I hope they are ones that she will take to heart. It was a fun story about friendship and discovering who you are. With just a touch of romance, it makes for a fun read.

This is a newer version of Deep Blue Eyes and other Lies. I read it a long time ago, but from what I can tell there were some new scenes (or at least some scenes I didn’t remember) and the characters names were changed. The name changes fit the characters into the rest of the series; it was actually fun to see Cassidy’s background.

Content: Clean.

I kinda found this book by accident! If you have read "All is fair in Love, War and High School" then you will recognize this as the story that comes before it. Cassidy Woodruff is an only child and her best friend has just moved away. A new family moves in with a rebellious daughter her age (Elise). Cassidy and Elise become friends (mostly because they both need a friend). As Elise reverts back to her rebellious ways her older brother Josh tries to help her any way he can - which keeps leading him back to the one person he thinks can help Elise -- Cassidy! As Josh and Cassidy spend more time together they realize they have a lot more in common than their concern for Elise. If you love Janette Rallison's other books, then you will love this one, too!

Hilarious YA chick-lit novel

Fifteen-year-old sophomore, Cassidy, is broken hearted when Anjie, her long-time best friend and next-door neighbor, moves away. As a fellow serious, A-student, no one has ever understood Cassidy like Anjie. Then a big, boisterous family moves into Angie's house, and at first Cassidy is hopeful she might make a new friend when she learns that the family includes a girl her age. Unfortunately, mercurial, party-girl Elise turns out to be the polar opposite of Cassidy's ideal for a friend. Elise is a terrible student, gets drunk at unsupervised parties and, worst of all, she starts dating Chad, a handsome athlete Cassidy has worshipped from afar since middle school.

Cassidy is ready to throw in the towel and give up on Elise until Josh, Elise's gorgeous, senior brother who drives the two girls to school each day, begs Cassidy to remain Elise's friend. He considers Cassidy a steadying influence on Elise, whose wild ways were the main reason the family moved from urban California to Cassidy's tiny home town in Washington State--they wanted to remove Elise from bad influences.

Though Elise's problems sound rather serious, the tone of this story remains comedic throughout. It is written as hilarious YA chick lit. Its many laugh-out-loud moments are produced by a combination of Cassidy's dating disasters and the overwhelming inrush of Elise's chaos into geeky Cassidy's previously well-ordered life.

It takes a truly gifted writer to create a character as messed up as poor Elise and make her as sympathetic as she is. Underneath all her rebellion against her family for being lost in the shuffle of six siblings and a seventh on the way, Elise really does love her family, including the small siblings she constantly babysits. In addition, even when she is loudly complaining, Elise, who is Mensa-level intelligent, is extremely witty. Elise is such a ball of fire, in fact, if Cassidy weren't so smart and quietly witty herself, Elise might have upstaged her. As it is, the sparring between them is quite evenly matched and a pleasure to witness.

There is also a lovely romantic subplot for Cassidy, which adds greatly to the overall enjoyment of the story. The guy that Elise ends up with is wonderful, and her journey to an HFN romance is both funny and heart-warming.

All in all, this book is a real treasure, not to be missed.

Parental guidance: Though Elise does do some underage drinking, it is never romanticized, rather it is seen through the eyes of Cassidy and Josh as the serious problem it is. There is no underage sex or swearing in this book, and I would personally consider this book suitable for preteens as young as 12, but the story is so well written and entertaining that older teens and adults will appreciate it as well.

Fans of this book will be happy to know it has an equally delightful sequel called All's Fair in Love, War and High School.

I rate this book as follows:

Heroine: 5 stars
Subcharacters: 5 stars
Writing: 5 stars
Chick Lit Plot: 5 stars
Romance Plot: 5 stars
Overall: 5 stars

I laughed so much during this book it was really good. My favorite part was the Bob date that was just amazing I never knew someone with such bad luck. In my opinion Cassidy was a little high strung she needed to let loose more like Elise was telling her but Elise way of letting loose was not the right way like Cassidy told Elise they need a happy medium.

Everything I would expect from Janette Rallison. A romantic comedy filled with witt and laugh outloud moments. Also the first e-book I read on my iPad, I couldn't wait to read it, and was not disappointed.

I adore Ms. Rallison's writing because she writes so realistically and effortlessly. She has such flowing sentences and she doesn't waste a single word.

Cassidy is a good girl and she's attracted to good boys. Cassidy enjoys studying, avoids trouble and it low on the popular hierarchy. She has a crush on Chad Warren.

He got good grades, which meant he was smart, and a smart guy had to want an intelligent girlfriend. I was clearly qualified for the position.

Being an only child means Cassidy's parents dote on her and are overprotective, but it also means she's lonely.

The main plot revolves around making and maintaining friendship with Elise. Elise comes from a family of six. She's sophisticated, volatile and sassy and according to Cassidy, “psychotic”. Elise challenges Cassidy to be more confident and loosen up. In exchange, Cassidy helps Elise be herself and realise that it's not lame to be smart and enjoy intelligent activities.

Josh is Elise's older brother and he believes that Cassidy is good for Elise. He and Cassidy bond over the fact that Elise is completely unstable. Josh is so adorable. He's the kind of character that doesn't have to do anything and you still squeal when he enters the room. I love love loved him. I loved the way he banters with his sister and looks out for her. I loved the way he plays with kids and I loved his sense of humour and how he vacuums thoroughly. =D Being the oldest of six kids gives him maturity and he's so serious. He and Cassidy commiserate over dating woes.

Josh - “I have to be logical about it to find someone compatible.”
Cassidy - “What about chemistry?”
“Yeah, right. What I need is someone who understands why Cheerios are ground into the seats of my car.”

This was such a treat to read! I am an official fan of Janette Rallison!

My Summary: Cassidy's best friend Anjie moved just before their sophomore year. Cassidy and Anjie had been best friends since 2nd grade when Anjie moved into the neighborhood a few houses down. Cassidy has to deal with the loss of her best friend and trying to befriend the new girl, Elise, who moved into Anjie's old house, but she and Elise don't exactly get off to a great start.

I loved this book all over again! This was rewritten from her book, Deep Blue Eyes and Other Lies, published 16 years ago. Janette Rallison cannot go wrong in my mind. Her books are always enjoyable and so funny with cute romances. It was fun to read a familiar book with a some new twists. The characters are funny and easy to relate to.

One of my favorite scenes was when Cassidy took her driver's test, hilarious! The old man that administered her test reminded me of a guy I had to drive with during driver's ed. He was totally paranoid and would grab the steering wheel from me and slam on his brake all the time. I promise I'm not a bad driver; the poor man was just terrified.

I could be wrong, but I think this was Rallison’s first published book. The main character Holly is an active LDS girl who is very excited to turn sixteen so she can start dating, driving and is just another step closer to attending college at BYU. When a new girl moves into her neighborhood she is excited to make a new friend. Although they are both LDS, Emma is not active and leads a very different lifestyle than Holly. It was really a nice story about friendship, forgiveness, compassion, and understanding. I enjoyed Holly’s character and that she was a good friend to Emma when everyone else wanted to forget her. It’s a good example of being someone’s friend and still holding to your own values. The romance in the story was nice, although pretty subtle. Overall a very enjoyable Sunday afternoon read. If you enjoy Rallison’s other novels then you will probably enjoy this as well.

Cassidy Woodruff is an only child whose best friend has just moved away. So when she finds out that the new neighbours moving in next door have a teenage son and daughter, Cassidy is determined to make new friends. But Cassidy is a good girl. She is a bit high-strung and an overachiever so when she befriends Elise a rather rebellious wild child, she is in for a huge awakening. Just when she is about to give up on her new friendship Elise's older brother Josh requests that Cassidy give Elise one more chance. He wants Cassidy's good influence to rub off on his younger sister.

Surprisingly this story is filled with great real-to-life characters and an uplifting storyline that will keep the reader flipping the pages. I say surprisingly because I purchased this book for only 99 cents off Amazon and it turned out to be a great read.

So cute!! The romance was less of a focus with this one, but still adorable. I love how their feelings/relationship progressed.
And while Elise desperately needed to grow up, her sarcastic sense of humor/quick retorts cracked me up.
And while there was teen drinking, it wasn't glorified...I thought the high school party scene was accurately portrayed. It's empty, pointless, and when you're the sober one observing it all, it looks exactly how Cassidy saw it at the party she went to in order to pick up Elise.
And Josh was just about perfect. I wish moments between him and Cassidy had gotten more "screen time"...but this was still a sweet story. I liked that it dealt with other things such as friendships, choices and their consequences, and how our decisions affect those around us. All around an enjoyable YA novel--which isn't at all surprising since it's a Janette Rallison book. :)

In my eyes Janette Rallison is just one of the cutest authors around. Her books are just cute and most of the time laugh out loud funny! I am a big laugher in life but for some reason when reading a book it takes a lot for me to "LOL" but with her books I really do. It's even funnier if I read around my hubby because then he gives me the look of "what's so funny?"

This book was cute. I always want a little more interaction and a little more when they finally do get together. But that's just not Rallison books.

YA Romance. Heroine is a high school sophomore whose best friend just moved across the country. Now she’s left with no one, but when a new family moves in on the street, maybe her troubles will be over…or just getting started. As she meets Elise and her older brother, Josh, she will be in for a wild ride where she must learn who she really is and what she wants out of life. A fun, witty, coming of age story that really sucked me in. This author is great.

Cute, cute. Cassidy's best friend moves away and a new family moves in--with a wild girl just her age. Cassidy decides to befriend Elise and because of that, gets to know her senior brother. I thought some of these characters sounded familiar--"All's Fair" is about their Jr year.

Content: Elise is wild and drinks, gets drunk, goes to parties. No details really, just mention of these things.

Funny, funny, funny! And there is so much clever dialogue in this book! I loved it.

I also really liked the idea of letting Elise deal with her own problems that Cassidy and Josh come to. It is always nice if you can help your friends, but sometimes it is necessary to realize when you have to let them take responsibility for their own problems. What a great issue to bring up for teenagers.

One of the funniest and sweetest teen romance book I have read..

As always what makes this book interesting are the lead characters.
Cassidy is a beautiful nerd and she owns it.
She is not a rebel for the sake of being rebellious.
She is not guy-crazy but she has her crushes and her heart breaks.
She is an amazing friend and her humor sense is great.
Overall Cassie is one of the best YA romance heroine I have seen so far.

Josh is a good foil for Cassie.
Their romance is built slowly but mostly cos Cassie takes initiative - which feels okay cos Josh's reasons make some sense.
He's older by 2 years and in high school, that can be a big deal.

Overall: Its a fun read and I am looking forward to trying more from Janette Rallison
