This is a survival story with a happy ending. As a young girl Eva Erben was suddenly forced by the Nazis to leave her home in Prague to join, with her parents, one of the transports to the Theresienstadt Ghetto. The nightmare that followed is told by Eva as a young girl struggling to cope with the fear and danger that becomes part of her world. This child s view of the Holocaust is a unique and moving story as well as an important historical record. When the allies drew ever nearer to the camp, Eva along with her fellow prisoners were hurriedly evacuated by the SS and taken on a 500km march, walking 30-40km a day through Poland in the snow and cold. Her mother died on the march, leaving Eva alone in the world, but miraculously, she managed to escape her captors and was found and then hidden by a Czech family until the war ended. Then follows her rehabilitation through a journey back to her old home in Prague, a meeting with an old friend, travel across postwar Europe and eventually emmigration to Israel. Escape Story is ideal for school work with children and a great addition to the children s literature of the Holocaust, but provides a different perspective from that of Anne Frank. Written by a grandmother for her grandchildren, giving a very personal account of her own experiences during the Second World War, this book is suitable for children from 11 upwards and adults or can be used as a reference for younger children with teacher guidance.

I can't "judge" this book. It is the story of a wonderful lady. I had the privilege to see and hear her in person when she spoke to an audience of 800 people at the ICEJ event here in Stuttgart on this year's Holocaust memorial day.
Despite all the horrible things she went through when she was little more than a child - she is the same age as my Dad - it was so encouraging to see this still beautiful and joyful woman who with her husband built a family and a life in Israel.
God bless her!!!

I don't want to rate this book since the story is way too personal to just evaluate with a number of stars.
Over the Christmas holidays, some friends from New Zealand came to visit me and we went to Berlin. We came across the museum beneath the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe without having known about its existence. After having seen the really well-made exhibition I decided to buy one of the books that each told the story of a survivor.
When living and going to school in Germany you feel like you learn a lot about the Holocaust but you are still shocked (especially by personal accounts) every time you hear or read something about it. I'm glad I picked this book up.
