Argren Blue is a complex and thoughtful story with interesting well-developed characters, a twisting plot line, great world-building, and an uplifting message about being true to oneself and finding allies where they are least expected. It has a Star Wars like feel of rebels with heart, attitude, and special abilities fighting a seemingly hopeless war against a powerful empire. Add in, witches, an inquisition, ninja-like assassins, a hero that has the ability to stop time while he moves in an out of another dimension, and several themes including the importance of art to cultural identity, and you got quite a tale.

"Alar Argren Blue: A Spirit Song Story" by Ross Hightower and Deb Heim is a well-crafted and captivating fantasy novel that seamlessly blends art, magic, and war to narrate a tale of hope, resilience, and the power of unity of purpose. The novel excels on several fronts, with its world-building being particularly impressive. The authors have meticulously crafted a vibrant and richly detailed world, complete with its own unique history, culture, and geography. Notably, the various regions of Argren are described with distinct characteristics; for instance, the Richeleau region is known for its lush forests and bountiful vineyards, while the Kartok region features an arid landscape and a thriving mining industry.

The character development in the novel is intricate and skillfully executed. Readers can't help but form a bond with characters like Alar and Tove, who are both relatable and sympathetic figures. Despite their struggles to find their place in the world and the childhood traumas they grapple with, these characters exhibit bravery and determination, willing to risk their lives for their beliefs.

The plot unfolds at a brisk and exhilarating pace, maintaining the reader's engagement throughout the novel's length. Numerous unexpected twists and turns keep readers guessing, with the suspense building towards the climactic final battle, where a rejected stone becomes the cornerstone of their victory

Highly recommended!!

Hightower and Heim, through their thoughtful and thorough character and setting development, have created an enchanting world. I'm certain that immersing yourself in Argren will make you want to go to an old-timey pub and order a large mug of ale whilst listening to a bard sing. If you're a fan of the fantasy genre then you won't want to miss this!

A free book from Voracious Readers thank you.

The Empire wants it all and their cruelty and greed are spread across the land. The Inquisitors are all powerful and take what they want, murdering the innocent and any who stand in their way.
There are a small band of rebels who become entangled with an Imperial Witch who has her own agenda
A wonderful tale of the fight for freedom with a cast of amazing characters.

This story was a lot of fun reading. It got dry in a couple spots but if you can stick it out, it’s more than worth it. Lord of the Rings meets Robin Hood, only they’re rescuing people rather than stealing to feed the poor but they’re on an adventure that takes them through a magical land.

I received a copy of this book from the authors via Voracious Readers.

Argren Blue: A Spirit Song Story by Ross Hightower and Deb Heim is an epic fantasy that grabs you from the first page and refuses to let go. Set in the tumultuous land of Argren, this story weaves together rebellion, personal growth, and the unyielding hope of a people determined to reclaim their freedom. It’s a richly imagined tale that both longtime fantasy fans and newcomers can appreciate.

The protagonist, Alar, is the heart of this story. As a young rebel fighting against the Empire’s oppression, Alar’s journey is as much about self-discovery as it is about leading his people. His awakening to a mysterious, powerful ability—something out of legend—adds an element of awe and wonder to his already gripping narrative. What sets Alar apart is his deeply human struggle with the burden of his newfound powers and the expectations that come with them. He’s a character you can root for, someone flawed and relatable yet undeniably heroic.

The supporting characters add depth and color to the tale. From the enigmatic imperial witch, whose motivations keep you guessing, to Alar’s loyal comrades, each character has a distinct role in shaping the story. The relationships between them feel authentic, filled with camaraderie, tension, and, at times, heartbreak. These connections ground the story in an emotional reality, making the stakes feel all the more personal.

The world-building in Argren Blue is top-notch. Hightower and Heim have created a vibrant, layered setting that feels alive. Argren itself, with its history, culture, and perilous political climate, is as much a character as Alar or his allies. The descriptions of the imperial stronghold and the treacherous missions undertaken by the rebels are so vivid that you can almost feel the cold stone walls and the tense air of danger.

But this isn’t just a book about battles and rebellion. At its core, it explores the cost of war—what it takes from individuals, what it gives in return, and whether the sacrifice is ever worth it. As the rebellion grows, so do the complications and consequences, and the authors don’t shy away from showing the moral ambiguity of such a struggle.

The pacing strikes a delicate balance, moving quickly enough to keep you hooked but taking time to develop characters and immerse you in the world. By the time the rebels embark on their daring rescue mission, you’ll feel as if you’re right there with them, holding your breath with every twist and turn.

For fans of epic fantasy, Argren Blue delivers everything you could hope for: well-written characters, a complex plot, and a world that feels vast and alive. It’s a story of hope and resilience, of rising above overwhelming odds and discovering the hero within. Whether you’re here for the action, the world-building, or the emotional depth, this book has it all. An absolute must-read for fantasy lovers.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from VRO.

This story was a YA adventure fantasy tale, it gave me Lord of the Rings/Hobbit meets Robin Hood vibes.
The story is based around a group of rebels, resistant to the imperial government? When I had first started reading it mentioned imps, and I was dead excited thinking yes, straight off the bat we have supernatural creatures, but they were never actually described as such, so was vastly disappointing when I finally came to the conclusion about 30% in that they were referring to imperials. My error for being overeager, I still immensely enjoyed the imps regardless.

The MC of the story is Alar, who can realm walk to the land of the dead. This makes him slip in and out of time undetected, reminiscent of the lord of the rings/hobbit 'the one ring'. When Alar realm walks, he uses this to surprise his enemies and resurfaces behind them, and because they were frozen in place they never see it coming. Excellent.

As for the supernatural elements of this book, there are some. Witches, realm walkers, spirits.

The feeling I got from the story was trust.
Trust in yourself, in others, in what you do, in what matters, in what you believe, in the cause, in what the future could be.

I got so many Hobbit vibes from Alar in his dirty, smelly clothes, adventuring to do all sorts of quests and then with the stealing of food on his journeys to feed the rebels, I was immediately thinking Robin hood, so he was a Robbit to me from then on. Rescuing the wee girl from inquisitor, stealing from the rich.

Although the characters were all quite young, the MC seemed very mature for his age, like his trauma had aged him, made him head strong and determined. The other characters, some also having been through trauma, still seemed quite young. So it was clear that the authors grasped that not everyone reacts the same to trauma. I liked this.

I loved that there was a whole forgotten secret language used by the characters, it added a little something something to the tale. I'd have liked to have seen about the elders teaching them, perhaps telling stories, in secret gatherings. I was however glad that it wasn't just a huge information dump on me all at once, adding in little pieces of the language at a time was far more interesting and easier for my brain to process.

Overall, the world building was good, story was good, it did take me a while to read it though, it's not one of those books you devour, more a slow paced book you read in dribs and drabs.

4* stars from me, because I loved the whole rebellious teenager on a journey with LotR/RH elements. EPIC.

In Argren Blue: A Spirit Song Story by Ross Hightower & Deb Heim, readers are immersed in a gripping fantasy tale filled with resilience, self-discovery, and the pursuit of freedom. The story unfolds with Alar, a character burning with determination to free Argren, joining a resistance movement. Despite facing numerous setbacks and doubts about their impact under the oppressive Empire, the group remains steadfast in their mission.

The plot thickens with the introduction of newfound abilities within the group, leading them on a daring mission to free prisoners from the Empire's grasp. Under the guidance of an imperial witch, this mission rekindles their hope but also attracts dangerous attention from the Empire.

Parallel to this, Harold Wolfe, a persecuted half-breed, finds himself entangled in a complex plot orchestrated by a powerful inquisitor. His journey is a labyrinth of rebel alliances, assassins, and political intrigue, making his quest for truth and freedom all the more perilous.

As the narrative progresses, Alar and his allies confront their adversaries with unyielding courage, embodying themes of justice and resistance. The story is a rich tapestry of complex character dynamics and vividly portrays a struggle against tyranny.

The character of Alar is particularly compelling, showcasing a journey of self-discovery and untapped potential reminiscent of legendary heroes. His development throughout the story highlights the universal theme of hidden greatness within individuals.

In contrast, Harold Wolfe's journey deeply explores identity and purpose. His inner conflicts and quest for self-understanding underscore the notion that our origins do not define us entirely, delving into themes of belonging and the complexity of individual identity.

Argren Blue is a commendable coming-of-age fantasy novel for its robust, believable world-building and character development. The inclusion of a glossary aids in navigating the richly detailed setting. The story masterfully balances suspense with the unfolding plot, making it a compelling read for fans of fantasy and adventure. This novel is a vivid journey through a world where the fight for freedom and identity resonates profoundly with the reader.

A Terrific Read … This Most Wonderfully Grounded Fantasy
With its memorable characters and smart, layered storytelling, Argren Blue: A Spirit Song Story is a novel that makes me happy there are more tales in this series. True to the title color, Ross Hightower and Deb Heim created a marvelously rich and deep vision here, one filled with humor and clever banter throughout.
The novel centers around Alar, a young rebel known for both his recklessness and his good heart. While the rebel group of oss’stera (our struggle) is early on guided by the elder Sten, Alar becomes more assured and determined as a leader, his burgeoning powers growing with each journey, mission, and raid. One of the pleasures of the novel is how Alar – with both his adolescent insecurities and haunting memories – gropes his way forward socially, strategically, and even romantically (the scenes with Scilla are disarming and charming). While I want to avoid spoilers, Alar’s discovery and emerging mastery of his gifts become an increasingly urgent and powerful element of the story. Furthermore, Alar’s relationship with Tove, who must overcome scars both physical and emotional, serves as the moral locus of this tale – one that is palpably aware of the horrible necessities of rebellion.
Hightower and Heim possess their own special gifts as the reader becomes deeply engaged in the plights of so many characters, even the initially less sympathetic witch Regan, the Dusulti assassin Brie, and the novice inquisitor Harold. Plus, the deftly integrated ruminations of the Alle’oss artistic tradition imbues the novel with a worldly gravitas. In the end, the intense and complex machinations in Argren are tremendously entertaining as the threads of the novel join in a satisfying climax. The inspirations behind the last-minute alliances have as much elegance as they do expediency. I can’t wait to continue this series.

Synopsis – Argren Blue tells the story of Alar, a resistance fighter in the oppressed realm of Argren, who discovers his latent magical abilities that allow him to travel between realms. After a daring mission to rescue prisoners attracts the Empire’s attention, Alar and his companions must evade retaliation while preventing the collapse of Oss’stera, all amidst a plot involving a corrupt official, mercenaries, and valuable art.

Thoughts – I have enjoyed this book for its fantastic world-building that immerses me in a richly detailed world, compelling characters with complex motivations that evoke empathy, and a fast-paced plot filled with unexpected twists that make it hard to put down.

I feel that multiple character perspectives help me foster a strong connection with a variety of characters, not just the main character, Alar. It also enables the plot to flow through all the twists seamlessly, as each character brings unique viewpoints and revelations. Through these perspectives, the richness of the world comes to life, offering layers of depth that invite the reader to engage more fully with the unfolding drama. This makes for a very exciting read.

I would 100% recommend Argren Blue to anyone seeking an engaging and captivating read. Each chapter brings new revelations and depth to the characters, allowing for a truly immersive story that resonates with the reader on multiple levels. The plot unfolds with unexpected twists that keep you on the edge of your seat, making it difficult to put down. I’m genuinely looking forward to reading the next book in this series, as I can’t wait to see how the author continues to evolve the storyline and deepen the connections between characters.

Many thanks to the authors and Book Sirens through which I received a copy of this book!
Argren Blue is the story of Alar, a young rebel who discovers he has magic (which was super cool and I loved every moment of it when it started to get fleshed out)
Although this is an epic fantasy in an ocean of epic fantasies centered on young main characters new to magic, this reads like a solid book, with a solid plot, solid characters and most importantly solid writing.
I've chuckled a few times at Alar's inner monologue during stressful times. He is a fun character to read.
The magic system is revealed through bits and pieces, there is no tedious info dump. We discover everything gradually through our characters' perspectives. Everything is interwoven with the plot, which makes for a good pace of the story. I was particularly satisfied with how we get to discover the other characters. They get a natural development through our main POV. Everything flows naturally. Even the age of our main character comes through loud and clear in most situations. So often I've read books where the main 16yo is more mature than they have any right to be and it's not the case here.
The other POVs were also interesting to read, although sometimes the writing between them got very similar and I was confused, but this happened rarely. In the end I felt the other characters added some much needed diversity to the story.
The Alle'oss and their struggle was an interesting addition to the plot and a good driver to Alar and the others' motivations. It felt real (and I especially loved all the words and names).
This book was a satisfying read and I will be coming back for the next one. 5 stars!

My first time with these authors. I think I can safely say it wont be my last.

I got ahold of this book through the Voracious Reader Program. My first time working with them as well.

So in all honesty i want to rate this book a 3.5 but you cant do that with GoodReads. Unlike what I normally do and down rate the half star books I felt this one deserved the up rating. It is more a 3.75 star.

This one is a young adult coming of age tale. Now let me be clear, I am about as far from a young adult as you can get but if you have read any of my previous reviews you will notice i have read quite a few YA stories and most are wonderful. I have no issues dipping my toes in these waters.

So for me, the story started a little slow. I was not sure i was going to like it. In the first couple of chapters I had my doubts about our main characters. For me they seemed very soft. No meat on the bones as it were. I stuck with it and i am glad i did. Alar, the main grows quickly. Tove has so many layers, she could easily steal the show and dare I say without offering a spoiler, could quite easily have her own series of books. Scilla is the glue and Ukrit is the one you will love to hate. Good for some comedy as well. Leif needs more screen time as it were. He could end up doing great things in future tales.

The world is the world, a typical fantasy world. The magic system is new to me. An interesting concept. A few times there maybe overused but i can forgive that.

All in all very well done. I am looking forward to future adventures from this crew.

Overall Rating = 5

Storyline & Concept = 5
Writing & Delivery = 5
Editorial = 5

This epic fantasy novel follows the adventures of Alar, a leading member of a ragtag group of rebels hoping to overthrow the Empire. It isn’t until he discovers he has a special power that things turn around for him and the rebels. Events force extraordinary and dubious alliances on Alar and his compatriots as they fight against corruption, assassins, mercenaries, and betrayal in order to save their culture and their freedom.

The authors have created a vivid and compelling world in this second installment of the Spirit Song trilogy, which is a prequel to Spirit Sight. I was immediately invested in the fate of Alar and his friends, aided by the skillfully described settings and circumstances. The writing is outstanding, fully immersing the reader in the emotions and the adventures of the many characters. Told from multiple points of view, I was easily able to distinguish and keep track of the numerous groups and relationships. It is somewhat lengthy, but it’s a fast read simply because it was difficult to put down. Although I had not read their previous novel, it was not a handicap. The novel can certainly be read as a standalone, but judging by the quality of the writing, it would be worthwhile to snap up a copy of Spirit Sight.

Sublime Line: “A fast-paced, five-star fantasy adventure that will remain in your thoughts long after the last page is turned.”

3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
Argren Blue: A Spirit Song Story is an adventurous coming- of-age YA fantasy. The world is rich in details, including realistic forests, industrial towns and inns with bards. The corrupt Empire with rebels fighting for freedom made me think of Robin Hood and his band of misfits advocating for the people. The characters are young and on that journey of self-discovery. They want change when seeing oppression and war but are finding it hard to make an impact.
The introduction of the inquisitors point of view was interesting adding another layer of world-building, creating that political intrigue.
I enjoyed the magic system, this felt unique and gave the story an added supernatural element that I felt went beyond the usual fantasy magic. There are also witches and assassins adding to the impressive cast of characters.
Overall a well written and engaging story.
If you like rebellious teenagers and stories of resilience with a side of art appreciation then this is a book for you.
Thank you to the publisher for an ARC. This is a voluntary review of my own thoughts.

From the first few lines, the taut prose and rapid-fire pacing of Argren Blue: A Spirit Song Story, create a rare immersive reading experience that will keep you turning pages late into the night.  Against the backdrop of a magical fantasy realm, our young protagonist and his fellow rebel fighters battle the forces of the Empire in an endless round of futile skirmishes. As he matures, Alar discovers he is in possession of a mysterious ability promising untold power, one that could tip the scales in the rebels’ favor. When a seemingly impossible challenge is posed, the rebels reluctantly accept, with explosive results. Thoughtfully-crafted characters, cinematic adventure, and tasteful sensuality round out a richly-woven fantasy world complete with its own complex geography, history, and culture. Co-authors Ross Hightower and Deb Heim have spun a magical tale highly recommended for lovers of epic adventure, fantasy, and medieval lore.

Alar’s discovery of his own powers adds an interesting twist, bringing a mythical element to his struggle that gives a spark of hope. But what I appreciated most was how the authors don't make this newfound strength a quick fix for his problems. Instead, Alar’s journey feels grounded and real, even with the mystical powers at play. The mission to free prisoners from the Inquisition turns out to be a turning point—not just for Alar but for the resistance as a whole—and the fallout from this act feels tangible, looming over each character with a reminder of the Empire’s ever-watchful eye.

The world-building in Argren Blue is rich and detailed, giving a sense of history that makes the setting come alive. It’s the kind of story where the environment feels as much a character as Alar himself.

I really enjoyed this. I will admit, it took me a while to get into, but after maybe 40 pages or so, without realising it, I was engrossed!
One of the things I enjoyed about this was that even though it was a good size book, there weren't needless characters and descriptions of every tree and cloud. It was pure storyline and character development. Honestly, I can't wait for poor Alar to have a nice long nap and a good meal, the poor guy never stopped! Alar finds himself as a bit of inadvertent leader of a resistance group to the imperial regime. Engaging in one seemingly impossible mission after another, he accidentally discovers he has a gift, but for all the ways it can help him, the more ways it can put him in danger.

Great story of self discovery, heroism and a fast moving plot. Slow burn, maybe, but it definitely makes up for that. 4.5 stars

"Argen Blue by Ross Hightower is a solid read that offers a mix of intriguing science fiction elements and well-developed characters. The story's premise is unique, and Hightower does a commendable job of building a believable world with engaging twists. However, the pacing felt uneven at times, with certain sections dragging while others rushed by too quickly. Additionally, some plot points could have used more depth and clarity. Despite these shortcomings, Argen Blue provides an enjoyable experience for sci-fi enthusiasts looking for something new and different." The characters have depth and personality but at times it was difficult to understand or comprehend what was happening. Took me a long time to get through this book.

Argen and its people, the peaceful Alle’oss, are occupied by an oppressive Imperial Regime. A small, ragtag group, who call themselves the oss’stera, meaning our struggle, are determined to challenge their oppressors. A failed attempt to rescue some prisoners of the regime sets Alar, a young member of the group who is both brave and reckless, on a journey that brings him and his friends deeper into the struggle against the regime. This is an entertaining read of fantasy, with a large cast of characters, including individuals possessing various gifts (powers) and an Inquisition hunting them. The story is well written and various threads are brought to a satisfying end, although this is only the first volume of the series.

Alar and Scilla

An incredible beginning to a new series by Ross Hightower and Deb Heim. I absolutely could not put this book down. It starts with action right from the beginning. There is so much action, adventure, twists and turns, surprises and magic. The characters are all well developed, driven, engaging and easy to relate to. And the brilliant world building weaves and blends beautifully and magically throughout the story. I really enjoyed this book and absolutely recommend it! Now on to the next book!

Having read Spirit Sight last year, it was great to read the prequel and learn more of the history and background that lead to that book. Argren Blue is a fun book with plenty of action, great dialogue and interesting well-developed characters. I think the strength of the authors is the depth and complexity of the characters that leads to an understanding of their motivations.

Argren Blue is an epic adventure set in a new world where Alar learns he has magical powers and uses it to protect the downtrodden. Hightower and Heim skillfully build the world and introduce us to the magic through their character’s eyes. It is a classic tale of rebellion and resistance, filled with magic, witches, and assassins. Any fan of fantasy adventures will not want to put this book down

I won a free copy of this book in a giveaway!

I enjoyed Alar’s powers a lot in this book. I thought they were really interesting and added a lot of intrigue, though I really wish it was made more prominent in the story just how dangerous it could be to go into the underworld. I really would have loved to see more of the spirits so there could be more urgency throughout the story!

Alar, however, doesn’t seem to have to practice HOW to get into the underworld. After he learns of his powers, he’s just kind of able to get there. He does have to learn how to cope with his abilities once he’s there versus the outside world, but I do wish there was a bit more muddling when it came to learning how to use his powers.

There’s also just no chemistry between Alar and Scilla. It feels as though it’s assumed, and just “stated” that they have feelings for each other instead of leading up to their relationship.

Otherwise, I enjoy a lot of the characters! The inquisitors-in-training are my favorites from the story! I really enjoyed all of the parts they made their appearances, but the other characters were fun as well. I also really enjoyed the betrayal subplot. I thought it made sense, and I really wish behind the scenes was played upon more with it and with those that betrayed the group.
