As the snow falls and children sleep, a young reindeer witnesses the magic of the Northern Lights for the first time, Santa is in for a surprise when he encounters a playful puppy on Christmas Eve, and a gingerbread mouse brings a little magic to Christmas…
A delightful anthology of animal stories that makes perfect bedtime reading. Snuggle up with your little ones and share these sweet stories before they go to sleep. A Winter’s Night is another charming addition to the hugely successful range of anthologies from Stripes Publishing. With illustrations from Alison Edgson and featuring brand-new stories from much-loved authors such as Holly Webb, Julia Green, Guy Bass and Penny Dolan. A Winter’s Night would make a wonderful stocking filler or Christmas gift.
I liked A Winter’s Night because it has lots of lovely winter stories with cute animals and snowy adventures. The stories are cosy and make you feel warm inside. I gave it 3 stars because some of the stories were a bit the same and I wanted a bit more excitement. But it’s still a nice book to read on a cold winter’s night by yourself or to your children.
This book is an amazing book, my son loved listening to the stories and I enjoyed reading them to him. 1. The Night Watch - A puppy called Harry and his first experiences at christmas time. (Amazing, my favourite story in the book 10/10) 2. Mouse Magic - Molly has to stay with her grandmother while her mum and dad are at the hospital with her baby brother who is having an operation. She does lots of christmas activites including making a gingerbread mouse who comes alive. 8/10 3. The Hedgehog Who Wouldn't Hibernate - Robin is intrigued by a small hedgehog she see walking the snowy forest, isn't he suppose to be hibernating? 6/10 4. The Night Of The Snowriders - Two brothers want to ride with the sky riders but only one can win. (It has a nice message to the story, but it feels rushed into a short story 5/10) 5. The Night Flier - Grace is staying with her Auntie for a few days but once in bed she's scared by a white ghostly figure swooping past her window. 9/10 6. Fox Fire - Little Reindeer wants to see the people switch on their christmas lights, so everynight he runs to the top of the hill. One night he meets a fox called Aurora who tells him about 'Fox Fire' 'The Northern Lights' 8/10 7. The Storybook Waistcoat - Patch is an old teddy bear who tells his friends a christmas story every christmas eve, the trouble is he keeps foregetting what happens next. Can his friends find a way to help him remember? 10/10 8. Leo's Great Escape - Will had spent all christmas eve making a stocking full of sunflower seeds for his hamster Leo. But when Leo's cage door is open he worries that his cat Suzie has ate him as she's happily licking her lips. 10/10 9. The Curious Little Mouse - Esmerelda the mouse keeps hearing a loud roaring noise from far, far away and sets out to see what it is. She finds a river overflowing and falls in. Can she get out and save her family intime from the approaching flood. 6/10 10. Footprints In The Snow - Emily loves staying at her cousins house every christmas except for the scary stories they tell every christmas eve. But this year they are all scared by a strange noise from outside and only Emily is brave enough to investigate. 10/10

A mixed-bag of a collection, of 10 animal stories based around winter and Christmas themes. Some are definitely better than others (Narinder Dhami's 'Footprints in the Snow', Elizabeth Baguley's 'The Night of the Snow Riders'), and they are probably more suitable for slightly younger kids, but Iz enjoyed sitting by the fire, with the rain against the windows, and listening to cosy animal stories. There is humour ('The Night Watch' by Michael Broad), and nothing to frighten or upset, but equally nothing to challenge or excite much.
