Layla is back in Pittsburgh cleaning up her gambling, wastrel, generally ass-hole of a father's debts. She is also there to track down the mystery of what happened to her ten years ago. She knows that something happened in Pittsburgh that caused her to lose a whole year of her life and she's tracking down the mystery of what it was.

This leads her to Nathan Sinclair, a man whose family her father received several thousands of dollars from. Their first meeting is full of hostility from Nathan which leads Layla to wonder if they had met before.

This author is new to me and one I discovered because her book was a freebie on Kindle because I am a Prime member.

The pros of this story are many. The writing is crisp, clean and polished, there are no data dumps (big pet peeve of mine), and the story unfolds well. There is a hook -- the mystery of what happened ten years ago -- that is well set and well developed. The author kept me on the hook throughout the story by revealing dribs of information in well placed, well thought-out points in the story. This, imo, was the real strength of the book. It was strongly and deliberately plotted.

But I am a character person before I am a plot person. And it was the characters, imo, where this book falls somewhat apart for me.

I have seen these characters countless times before and I wasn't completely captivated by them. Layla is a textbook nice heroine. Actually she is too nice. She's sweet, wonderful, always smiling and charming to everyone. She can make friends anywhere. She knows instinctively how to make you a better you! She's also (a another big pet peeve of mine) a Noble Martyr.

She tracks down Nathan because she knows he gave her father some money and wants to pay back the 'debt.' I was never sure why Layla was so convinced this was a debt. For all she knows that money was a pay-off of a legit gambling win by her dad. Nobody was coming after her for that money. No bill collectors were calling. The po-po wasn't showing up at her door with a warrant. Not a knee-breaker in sight. So why does she insist on paying back something that for all she knows wasn't necessarily required to be paid back? Why does she sell her car (thus requiring her to rise earlier and work later to accommodate the bus schedule? Why does she take on extra shifts? All to pay him back his money and....Because she's Noble.

Nathan is also a familiar trope. A rich, Alpha hero who uses blackmail, secrets and enigmatic silences to keep a woman. You know, your typical, everyday Harlequin hero.

They end up with a HEA, of course, but I never understood why they fell in love with each other. I was also a bit put off by the abruptness of their sexual encounters. One minute they are strangers arguing and they next they're kissing & boinking.

There was potentially a great book here. As it is was, it was good. But I did like this author's voice and would be on the look out for other works of hers.

Because hero was pretty stupid. He was alpha alright but most of the time he acted like a spoiled child. It also didn’t score him brownie points that after ‘assuming’ wrong about heroine he just ran and ‘partied through cynical European women’ for two week. He never visited her when he had chance, when she needed him. Even though she was love of his life, as a result wasted 10 years. Again hero didn’t search for her after and I believe he never would’ve.

Last part of the book was more like a competition between him and his twin for the title of biggest douchebag! Heroine was better with a honorable core. I enjoyed the suspense too. And I’m not going to touch the brother’s book even with a pole after reading preview.
Marginally Recommended.

I have only read one other book by Theodora Taylor Her Russian Billionaire and based on those two books, she seems to have a very resounding theme. Borderline a$$hole, rich, alpha men, and the almost pushover females. (with a bit of blackmail mixed in)
The beginning of this book was plain painful for me. Layla was such a pushover, it was almost cringe worthy to read. I usually love me some hot controlling alpha men, but Nathan was a straight up a-hole in the beginning. They both more or less redeemed themselves in personality towards the end...but this book still left me with a "meh" factor. Just not that memorable.

This is the love journey of Layla and Nathan! Layla is a sweet girl attending college in Pennsylvania she meets her young man named Andrew and the two date for about a year. All is good on the surface but Andrew has an identical twin brother. Who seems to be the complete opposite of his twin in personality he's rude he's arrogant always abrupt with Layla. But Layla always takes it in stride. She always sees the bright side of everything. Little did she know he was falling in love with her. Everything became a mess just about a year after Andrew and Layla started dating. There was a misunderstanding and at the end of all of that Layla took a tragic fall down a marble staircase. As a result of this she broke several bones and she lost her memory. The very year she spent with Andrew. So the story is basically about her trying to recapture that night when she fell and The year that she lost because of the amnesia. If you like a little tension in your romance and some mystery this book is for you.

Trashy. There wasn't a story, all you got was sex sex sex and more sex. Don't get me wrong I like sex within a story, but this was going overboard. The characters were having heart felt conversation ABOUT THIER FATHERS while having sex? I don't get it. Every time they needed to talk they would end up having sex. I mean show me charming characters develop the story, but please don't just bombard me with sex. Pointless sex. Smh.

I have more books in this series I own but don't remember this one since it's been so long.
Well, other than I wanted to read more and started collecting them.
So, I will have to reread this one to be able to continue the series.

I love this book because it has the feel of a "bodice ripper regency" and the story is actually contemporary. The author's voice was pretty solid throughout the entire tale. I liked Nathan. I also liked that he didn't get soft once he figured he was in love. This is my first Theodora Taylor book and I look forward to reading more from her.

This is probably the 7th or 8th (maybe even more than that) book I've read by this author, and though the location settings change, names, and time periods, what stays the same are her characters. And no, that's not exactly a compliment.

Her female protagonists are usually weak-willed, overly apologetic, lose all rational thought when they see a penis, and take abuse and call it love. I haven't read all her books, but reading as many as I have and not one has deviated from that formula tells me all I need to know. Either Ms. Taylor doesn't like writing about women who have a backbone who find themselves falling into arduous situations they have to use their intellect to overcome, or she hates black women. I feel terrible saying that, but I don't see how you can essentially write the same woman over and over again and not get bored. Or not see a distinct pattern and want to change it up a little. But the women in her books are treated worse than dogs in her thinly veiled "romance" novels.

Her male protagonists are no better. The word no doesn't exist in their vocabulary, and sorry I don't find men forcing themselves on women as sexy. There's another word for that. They often are controlling, unapologetic a-holes who get coddled by the female protagonists. Whiny, entitled bullies who take a misunderstanding or miscommunication to lord it over the supposed love of their life's head to get her to comply with his wishes. There is never anything swoon worthy about them.

The characters in this book do not veer from those tropes, actually amplify them. I didn't believe in Nathan and Layla's love because this book told more than it showed. I understand it had less than 200 pages, but again, those pages didn't illustrate to me why I should want those two people together.

I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, or be overly critical but with so few well-written books in the IRR genre, when you find a writer who can write, but what she writers leaves a bad taste in your mouth because you can't connect with the characters or storyline, its disheartening. Ms. Taylor can write complex pieces in her supernatural series' (often again to a detriment), but they along with her human series' leave much to be desired because she forgets to develop her characters in a way to get me to care about them. *heavy sigh* Why do I still read her books? I'm hoping to find one that will resonate with me.

It’s been a good long while since I’ve read a straight contemporary romance, so when this book showed up on an Amazon Romance list with a bunch of awesome reviews, I decided it was worth a look.

Layla lost her memories following a fall that put her in a coma, but when chance leads her to Nathan once again, her past come backs to haunt her.

Let me start of by saying that I did not like the hero in this book at all. I’m about to tell you why in a minute. Your crush up and left you for another man…GET OVER IT! The beginning of this book stalled quite a bit, and the POV scene transitions became annoying. Some of the surprises were also revealed too early in the form of narration dumps. I was rooting for the HEA but I felt disconnected from the characters somehow due to the slow pacing of the narration. It all read like a cliche Harlequin Romance. I flipped through pages and pages of filler information.

I just never understood why Nathan “the hero” was just so angry all the damn time. The book should have been about Andrew, his brother. I’m not quite sure if this was supposed to be a cross between an erotic romance or steamy/sweet romance but I found the sex scenes to be a bit disturbing. Nathan “the hero” treated Layla like a WHORE. I wanted to reach in the book and slap her for being so weak. Plus I’ve never known any man to have a serious conversation while pounding it like wild beast from behind. This book could have used a better proofreader/editor.

I give it a C.

Nathan has no redeeming qualities, Layla is weak, the big mystery is meh, and the plot is sex sex sex sex sex...
There was no plot! Shocking as that might be I expect a plot with my book. And one thing that kept annoying me was the description of the characters, mainly Layla's, good qualities you say it once its ok you say it twice I can forgive that but once you say 3 times its crazy. Its a book, you are meant to show not tell(sort of). And really is it that big of a surprise that Layla is still the same person she has always been? She lost a year of her life not half of it. Brains I forgot about the brains which the characters in this book seem to lack. Thats it thats all I have.

Have I mentioned that I don't really enjoy books where one character is lying to and/or blackmailing another? This is the first in the series, which I read second, but that doesn't really matter since the books don't really relate much.

Interracial romances are iffy. This one didn't really focus on race much at all. It was more about the power the "hero" had over the heroine. And I wasn't a big fan of their dynamic at all.

Zero stars if possible. Just UGH. The classism, the racism, the sex scenes that were essentially rape. Basically the book says that emotional and psychological abuse is okay if you have a lot of money. And say you're sorry afterward. Making your heroine black does not mean you get a free pass on every other human quality. This book is appalling and one of the least romantic books I've read in a long time.

Another good story

Not sure how I missed this one from Theodora Taylor, but after reading Zahir, I realized that I hadn't read about the Sinclair's. I love romantic suspense so this was right up my alley. I really enjoyed this. Happily moving right on to Andrew's story!

Meh...got better once the revelations were made. Nonetheless, the characters are very trope-y and the plot, by the end, is cliche...especially the climactic moment.

Also, the narrator, Leyna Baltimore, was quite robotic in the delivery and this worsened the experience of a mediocre book.

Scored this as an Amazon freebie but I actually read it initially a few years ago. I was just as perplexed reading it this time as I was the first time. The plot was actually workable, except that Layla had absolutely no backbone. To say that she had a backbone of a soggy noodle is too generous. She's APOLOGIZING to a man who manipulated her, all but forced her to live with him, made her sign a ridiculous contract, and forces her to side with his way of thinking by sexing her into submission. Nathan straddles the line between aggressive/possessive and potentially abusive. That is not attractive to me, nor does it do the term "alpha male" justice.

The ending was a bit predictable but I wish there was more drama in terms of Layla sticking up for herself and being independent. Between Nathan and Andrew completely messing with her life, WHY wasn't she running screaming from both of them? Boo. The only thing I was excited about was the location: Pittsburgh (my family's hometown). Besides that, the copious amounts of steamy sex scenes were great. Nathan using those same sexcapades to manipulate Layla? Negative. That's not love folks. The writing was fantastic with minimal typos, but the plot development stumped me. I did like how the author intertwined the flashbacks, history of the character's relationships, and a bit of suspense. Still haven't found the energy to tackle the sequel... I just have a feeling it's going to be a let down. Conclusion - this book was a case of missed potential.

Really

Layla meets Nathan when she dates his identical twin brother Andrew in college. She looses her memory after a fall and ten years later returns to Pittsburgh to find the missing year of her memory. She contacts Nathan after she finds his name in her father's papers. Nathan is hostile and she does not know why. Pro the mystery of what happened to her. The con Nathan is an @$&hole. There is nothing appealing, likable or redeeming about him. He treats her worse than a whore and practically rapes her in 99% of their sex scenes however because she is supposed to be so in love with him it is so supposed to appear consensual. She is so overly nice that she can't see he is a jackass however with her love he will become a better person. Yeah! She so naive that she goes to Andrews home and announce to his wife that she is his ex girlfriend and needs to talk to him. Really just show up. Disrespectful. So essentially neither character is all that likable relatable or interesting. There are a few editing errors not enough to distract. Overall not for me but maybe for others.

I enjoyed this story even though I thought the male protagonist was a douche.

Layla returns to Pittsburgh 10 years after an accident and subsequent coma causes the memory loss of an entire year if her life. While going through her recently deceased father's belongings, she finds a receipt for an astronomical amount of money. She heads to the company that issued the check to her father and meets Nathan Sinclair.

After meeting Nathan, Layla is left with more questions than answers, including questions about her past relationship with Nathan. Although she is blackmailed by him and treated quite poorly, Layla can't seem to stop herself from wanting Nathan.

This relationship in the real world would be soooo toxic and dangerous, but it works in this story. Nathan is aggressive, angry and even downright hostile at times. Layla's sweetness and innocence help her past his nasty demeanor and helps to tame the savage beast that is Nathan.

This was my second book by Theodora Taylor. It was a quick read. I enjoyed Layla and Nathan together. It was a nice surprise when I learned that Nathan and Andrew were twins. It would have been nice to see the big proposal that Kate planned for Layla on Nathan's behalf but oh well. At least they're together.

The only issue I had was it seemed like the author messed up when talking about Layla's apartment and Nathan's loft. Layla's living room was vandalized and yet she went back there to change for the ball. Then Andrew shows up at Layla's apartment then we find out she disappeared behind the partition to get dressed. But the partitions were in Nathan's loft, not Layla's apartment.

Still liked Her Russian Billionaire more but this story was cute.

The beginning made me think the plot was going to be more interesting than it actually was because it's a big fat liar. I was gobsmacked by how juvenile everything (and everyone!) turned out to be. So, that was a let down. On the other hand, I like Taylor's voice. I like it a lot. It's the reason I couldn't put this down. It's the reason why I've been one-clicking all of her books. I mean, besides the fact that even though her books are set in different states everyone knows everyone and everyone's got a black wife. Does a body good.
OH and in case you were wondering, the sex scenes were indeed delish even if Layla follows the romance formula of saying please constantly (*weeps*) but she's a please and thank you sort of girl so I'M GOING TO ALLOW IT.

It was a pretty good read. I was wondering how it was going to play out since there were familial ties that complicated matters. I was thinking, oh no this can't be good, and it wasn't. I appreciated the story, but there were some blaring grammatical errors that should have definitely been caught be because I had to slow down and re-read to make sure I wasn't mistaken on what was written. I will continue on with the Russian Billionaire and hopefully the series continues to pick up.

Liked it a lot, but some aspects were a bit unbelievable. Unfortunately, I read the excerpt from "The Wild One (#4)" that was at the end and it involves the characters from this book. That story seems so contrived I feel bad for whoever paid for and read that mess. I also read a few of the reviews for "The Wild One" and it appears to be the hot mess I think it is. Needless to say I'll be buying the other books in this series, but will gladly skip book 4.

I must have really likes this book because I finished in one afternoon. I LOVE alpha males and this book didn't disappoint. :)

My rating would've changed if it didn't contain crazy lady. I prefer my romance without CAI/Law & Order drama. Nevertheless I enjoyed the book.

I actually liked that the heroine went into a coma and forgot a year of her life because it was like a puzzle, trying to figure out everything. So So steamy, as always. Held my attention. I liked Nathan and Layla. Made me laugh. I love this series.
