A fairly gruesome, bloody, violent graphic novel as the name suggests, with awesome art work but a fairly uninteresting story.

The ideas that were presented did hold my interest, but after making it half way threw the manga, it just felt like a diet version of hellsing (the anime) and the jack the ripper black butler arc. Be it the character designs (hair, eyes, chins), the angles, the 'rough' yet romanticized smokey atmosphere , its safe to say that this will quench the thirst of those into japan's romanticized victorian era sub genre, but there ARE better titles.

Uh... wow.

I love this style of anime. It's so bloody creepy. And yeah, bloody too. I definitely enjoyed the first volume. The story is very interesting and I definitely didn't see the little twist coming at all. UGH, so gorgeous. My style of anime for sure.

I only bought the first one, but I think I might be picking up a few more.

A+ for the artwork
A+ for the story so far.

Very uncomfortable reading.

As a huge fan of the Victorian era I found it very uncomfortable reading. Portraying Jack as a form of 'anti hero' is perverse and having whores as 'men eating demons' is not only unimaginative, it's also insulting.

Utterly disappointing.

This volume was engaging with pretty good art and evoking a good atmosphere of a little ‘edgy’. I am not sure if this is going to go in a direction that I will like however. I tend to get irritated with manga that are based on historic events but totally re-write history. We also have the added variable of a well known fictional character added in. That being said, with all the paranormal elements in this series, it may work. We will see how it goes in the next volume…

I think this is quite the mash up of historical horror elements, however while it bring a lot of names, after that initial understanding it settles, and works okay . I love the art and think that any horror lover would appreciate a few of these quick manga reads. The gore is not too over the top, but enough to enjoy. 5 stars because I genuinely enjoyed it myself. 4 stars in terms of quality.

At first it was what I expected but it soon turned into a whole lot of wtf. Very reminiscent of Hellsing and not what I expected at all. Hell I don't know what I expected.

Holy crows, exciting from start to finish. Maybe not the smartest repurposing of the Ripper story (considering our current PC culture climate), but definitely an interesting take.

My god, les boulettes !

It was interesting to say the least- and I was quite surprised no one else thought of this!

The artwork is hardcore, showing all the gore, but sometimes overlooking detail. The deamons are thankfully not cliche, the other characters look good enough- but some clothing details do not fit the time period. Sherlock is there with his deerstalker hat, and a rather simple clothes which is a releif from other Holmes enduced manga

The main characters in this book is Jack the Ripper, a deamon slayer out to hunt deamon-whores that seduce men and then kill them. Though, it does not seem he is right in the head, but it breifly explains about Jack nearer to the end. Holmes is his ally, suspected of keeping Jack on the legal side, he does his detetcive work, but is aware of deamons- thus justifying fan-fable on why Sherlock did not/could not solve the Ripper case. I thought this fit rather well and is apparent Holmes will be essential later in the series.

Minor characters served their place, though I do not think they will appear later. They include Roy, a Scotland Yard detective that gets involved with deamon-whore Susan, who gets him to kill and mutilate a few people. When Roy realises that Susan is in fact crazy, Jack turns up to save him as Susan assumes her true form. From this, we can gather that deamons are human like and can change, though all seem to be poor whores in this volume. Harold was Roy's partner in Soctland Yard, but was demoted for what seemes to be a new protagonist. Either way, forgettable characters that just push the story to the people we want to see

Ian Riely leads the Ripper case as he was installed by the Chruch. Dorky but highly intelligent, but it is apparent he is hiding something and is probably crazy.

Overall, I enjoyed this volume, though the plot was a bit slow moving, it made you want more. With the basic footwork in place, this series can go many ways and I would love to see some character development in later volumes

he series is called Hell Blade, and the first installment is entitles Jack the Ripper. I picked it up because I am a bit of a Ripper enthusiast and I like to read all the different takes on the history.

The cannon present here only surprises me in that I personally have not seen it before and therefore am slightly surprised that no one else has thought to take this on.

Here we are introduced to Jack the Ripper, an artificial human creation similar to Frankenstein's monster, albeit he is hella more higher functioning and is actually on a mission to wipe out the demons terrorizing London.

Apparently in this world, once a woman becomes corrupted through sin of any sort, demons will attempt to gain entrance to the world through their...well...womb. Something along the lines of the whole birthing a new army thing.

So the demon is 'born' and takes over the body of the woman and takes over her place in the world to live and corrupt happily ever after.

At least until Jack gets wind of them, in which case he makes sure their ever after ends not so happily.

Don't get me wrong, the whole womb thing is creepy as hell and about the only thing I would change about the series, but otherwise it's not bad for a beginning. We're introduced to Jack the Ripper who is a psychotic, sadistic ass along the lines of Dexter where he revels in blood and gore but channels his lust for violence into a higher calling in wiping out those demons that come forth. We also meet his intriguing young detective friend, a young lad by the name of Holmes, who helps Jack in keeping the police of his trail.

Dark, bloody, gritty, and twisted, it's an interesting take on the Jack the Ripper story and I'm halfway interested in seeing where it goes from here.

I'm being slightly generous in giving this 4 stars, I would rather be able to give it 3.5.

I love the Victorian era and I'm incredibly fascinated by both murderers in general and Jack the Ripper, among others, in particular (the fact that his identity is still, to this day, unknown is both maddening and part of what makes it so intriguing).

I'm also a huge fan of horror so the combination should be - and to a certain extent is - the perfect union.
Making Jack the unlikely hero is something I'm a little torn about: I really do like this Jack, but I can't entirely shake the feeling of "wrongness" - after all, there is little doubt that the original Jack the Ripper was anything other than a monster.
Even so, the story of Hell Blade is genuinely interesting - and the art is pretty horrifying, which is a big plus in my book!

That which I take issue with, is the mixing in of so many different historical, both fictional and real, characters, such as Nikola Tesla, Sherlock Holmes & Mr Hyde among others. Also the depiction of some of them (Sherlock Holmes and Watson in particular - I know that not even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock was born a middle aged man, but seeing him as a young, barely twenty-something, feels very odd and off for me) bothers me.

While the art, as I've already mentioned, is really good, it becomes slightly confusing at times to keep track of what's happening, especially in some of the more intense and action-filled scenes.

Overall, I'm sold, but there are some things that bothers me enough to subtract half a star.

Review: **Please Note May Contain Spoilers**

I would rate it 2.5/5. It's not my favorite readings about Jack the Ripper. It ended up being a little predictable after his "secret" was revealed. I don't think I will be picking up the future issues, because again it did come off as predictable. The only thing I did not see was that Sherlock Holmes and Jack the Ripper apparently know each other? And Holmes is also a demon hunter of sorts? I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new horror manga, or who is a fan of Jack the Ripper.

The manga starts off with two lovers, one of them being the detective who is working on the Jack the Ripper case. Most people already know about Jack the Ripper, but this manga relied heavily on it. Most adaptions give you a little background about him, and his murders. Until the very end of the manga. The pacing of the book is a little off. The beginning seems to drag on a bit, and then towards the end it starts to pick up, them just BAM everything happens at once. I really liked the art, it was very detailed and of course gory!

Okay then.
I literally read this in like 10 minutes. And it still felt like it went on too long.
It relied too heavily on the assumption that you know the basics about Jack the Ripper, but then didn't even build on them. Demonic Jack the Ripper isn't exactly original, and not particularly well done very often either. Even though they skipped over the assumed details, they still didn't expand on the details they added, which I still didn't fully understand.
And the art was just too difficult to follow. Particularly in the fight scenes. All the violence is everywhere and who knows who is winning who just got hit who's dying etc. And there was so much of it. I quite like good violence in my literature, but there was just too much for no discernible reason and why.
Why, in the middle of a fight, did one ripped, violent man call the other ripped, violent man a 'plonker'?
And god knows why Sherlock Holmes is suddenly all pally with Jack the Ripper. Or Reaper Jack. Idk what's going on. Idk if I'll continue (probably since there's only like 5 books).

Entertaining, but felt like it took too long for the "twist" to show up. And I'm wondering why the demons always show up in the form of young women that have to be killed. And it's the woman who snaps and becomes a murder and makes her lover kill someone else. Not sure I like the theme thus far. I guess the details on why it's young women demons will show up next volume. Jack's body seems disproportionate, in that his head in some frames is very very verrrry time with abs that seem to stretch forever. It looks rather odd... Not sure if I would read more or not. And the inspector from the Church kinda looks like Jack, so much so that i thought it was him. Maybe it's a plot twist or it's just going to be a similarity in character design.

So, when I first saw this. I thought that this book series would be pretty cool. The art seemed to be amazing (don't get me wrong it really is amazing.) I could tell right away that this author was heavily influenced by Hellsing since there are some uncanny homages to that manga. After reading the first volume of Jack the Ripper, I'm seriously confused at what is going on. I really wish that they explained it more in depth for me to understand. However, because I am a huge sucker for blood and gore, I think I may continue to read this.

This wasn't what I expected at all. I didn't read the back cover before I started reading so everything that happened was a total surprise. This made me laugh and I guess that's something. I'm actually amused enough to read the next volume.

I am obsessed with the Victorian Era and ANYTHING related to Jack the Ripper. This did remind me a lot of Hellsing, at least in the art style. I liked this one a lot, and I can't wait to read the next one. I think this will become a new favorite.

A different take on Jack the Ripper is a good description. It's an interesting story but is pretty bloody and dark at times, so if that's not you cup of tea I would suggest not reading it.
