READ AS PART OF THE LEFT BOOK CLUB:
A brilliant book that provides insight into the life and times of Leila Khaled, a fighter and activist of the PFLP who highkacked planes in her fight for Palestinian liberation. Notably, this tactic was very different than it's use by Islamist fundamentalists later, in that the aim was not to kill or injure civilians.
The book is by no means a hagiography and provides a balanced look at her life and times, and those of the PFLP that she was part of. It discusses not only her role, but her impact on politics, society, women and so on.
For example, it is notable that her image as an attractive woman carrying out this action garnered international press attention, and that in many ways, her role as a female freedom fighter who used arms and violence, was somewhat atypical but not unprecedented.
The shift to the religious right in these movements is also covered, as are the atrocities carried out by Israel.
Very interesting for those interested in Palestinian freedom fighters, leftism in the Middle East or Women in the Middle East.
