a quite interesting book about from since the writer heard the news of the death of her father to the very end of the entire funeral rites. In traditional Taoist believe, a funeral rite usually takes 49 days to complete. However, due to the modern life style, the rite has to be shrink down to a week or in a month. The writer gave the readers a very good information about how the rite had done with a sort of humorous and easy way. Really a good starter to understand the Taoist style funeral.
BUT, I have to say! Beside introducing the rite, she wasted so many pages on things that are not related with the title of the book or the idea should be given to the readers in the same book. Honestly, who really cares about how you feed your cats or ligate them within the same book you talk about how you miss your father and how you feel about the funeral rites.
Essay Liu’s writing is known for its simplicity and understated elegance, as seen in her later novel 希望你也在這裡(Hope You Are Here Too). One of her most well-known works, 父後七日 (Seven Days After My Father’s Death), carries the same style, subtle but powerful. With a touch of dark humor, she unpacked the absurd rituals surrounding her father’s funeral, turning grief into something unexpectedly relatable.
