Explaining why women between the ages of 35 and 50 often experience significant changes in mood, weight, sex drive, and general well-being due to hormonal imbalances, this guide shows women how to regain control of their hormones-and their lives-and feel good again through natural means. Women who have had long-standing physical and emotional complaints written off by doctors as normal or genetic are provided with step-by-step solutions to such hormone-related problems as weight gain, fibroids, sex-drive doldrums, adult acne, depression, anxiety, irritability, chronic fatigue, and facial hair. It is evident in this book that Doctor Jackson is passionate about the uniqueness of each woman. Therefore, she places an emphasis on hormone level testing, and individualized holistic treatment plans. A lot of the information in this book is an in depth discussion of the tests available, and the actual dosages of each hormone that should be discussed with your health care provider.
To be honest, I skimmed through the paragraphs on dosages, as they are not meaningful to me at this point in my life. However, I recognize that should I consider hormone replacement treatment, this book is an excellent guide for well informed discussions with my doctor.
My favorite of the perimenopause books so far -- helpful information presented in an easy-to-use format. Yet another aspect of women's health that is not well served by the mainstream medical community!
I was an employee under Nisha. Please, for your health and safety, find someone else to treat you. She doesn't know how to run a medical business, currently called 'Onepeak Medical.' None are correctly run and designed not to. Your information isn't safe or protected under her clinics. She and those she hires in upper management do not understand business or ethics. I was horrified by her unethical and blatantly inappropriate behavior. Even if your provider is good, the system ensures they can't help you. Nisha doesn't care about anything other than getting your money - not matter the cost. Please go somewhere else. Find someone else... She's sick
A candid, comforting "this is normal--here's why; you can feel better--here's how" look at hormonal changes for those of us in our late 30s and into our 40s.
It's a little outdated in its emphasis on hormone therapy as the first, most important approach. Unless your symptoms are severe, doctors are no longer as likely to recommend hormone replacement due to heart and cancer risks. The book also presents "natural" bioidentical hormones as less risky, which isn't necessarily true.
However, this guide offers other great approaches to encourage hormonal balance: stress management, nutrition, exercise, supplements, sexual nurturing. Many of you will already know the wisdom of Jackson's advice--a lot of it is typical stress, nutrition, exercise, supplement, and sex guidance. What's special here are the details on how both negative and positive choices affect hormones, and how they in turn affect quality of life.
A little embarrasing to list is publicly, but at the same time I think it's really important to be open about hormonal issues for women! This skinny, fact-filled book was extremely helpful for understanding medical concepts, tests that are available, the interconnectedness of our hormones/body/etc. I highly recommend it to any upper 30s to low 50s woman who is dealing with the classic fatigue, women's health issues, adult acne, etc. This practicitioner comes from a naturopath viewpoint but is really solid & concise in her book. Even if you aren't "technically" in perimenopause you'll gain a strong understanding since it's around the corner. She also wrote one for teenager hormonal issues but I haven't read that yet.
Overall, I thought this book offered some really good, practical information and suggestions. There were a couple of things I thought were missing: first, I wish there was more information regarding testing of FSH (follicle stimulating hormones) levels to determine if one is in perimenopause and, she did not provide the formula so that individuals can calculate their individual progesterone to estrogen ratios if they do not fall within the normal or optimal ranges.
This is a great overview and straight to the point book about managing and understanding your hormones. She really helps you understand what could be happening w/in your body and how to manage it naturally. Not the only reference you should "refer" to, but a good starting point.
Strongly recommended for any woman 30 years plus who is dealing with unpleasant symptoms and are being told it is a normal part of getting older. Very insightful and hopeful read
Great resource with some excellent recommendations. Not sure that I agree with some of the vitamin/supplement advice but the hormone, dietary, stress-relief and exercise advice was great!
