Hulbert undertakes a study of the effects of soils on the migration to and settlement of areas westward to the Mississippi, with a final chapter dealing with the trans-Mississippi country. While dealing with soil types, the book is also very much a study of the effects of topography on American history as it is of the influence of soils.
