If you are trying to get to grips with Keith Douglas's poetry, and you find it difficult, this is the answer. It really helps the reader to understand Keith Douglas's point of view and his personality, as well as the technical points of the poetry. I have to say that his brilliance is sometimes a cold brilliance and a poem that leaves the reader intellectually impressed but unmoved is a pointless poem. A lot of Douglas's "Selected Poems" are juvenilia that are good technically but quite dull to read. But Scammell evaluates each one very helpfully.
