Her gilded duty may protect her, but all that glitters is not gold.
Kolfinna has survived the Eventyrslot ruins and won her illustrious position with the Royal Guard, but she soon discovers her new life may not be all it’s cut out to be. With the Hunters Association gaining influence and more enemies trying to take her status away, she’s just one mistake from losing her position–and her life.
The looming threat of the Hunters isn’t her only problem–strange and powerful monsters are encroaching on the border, and when Blár approaches her with a request from the military to investigate, Kolfinna realizes this is the opportunity she needs to prove her loyalty and keep her position.
But the monsters at the border are more vicious and ancient than anyone could have imagined, and the secrets bordering the fae lands may uncover a devastating truth that will change Kolfinna’s life forever.

This book is the second installment that follows The Ruins of the Heartless Fae.
Kolfinna has finally made it to the Royal Guard. But unfortunately, it is not what she hoped to be. She is still considered a fae by her fellow soldiers. She is not allowed to use her powers, is not taught to properly fight, and is constantly bullied by her peers.
My heart really goes out to Kolfinna. She was really bullied in this one. Really challenging her confidence that she can even make it in the Royal Guard. But what I love about Maham Fatemi’s writing is that even though the main character's self-esteem is low, our MC learns to overcome self-doubts and finds her confidence.
I love Blár in this once again. He shows up to be on a mission with Kolfinna to discover more of the monsters that are suddenly appearing. Oh my goodness, the way it is described, they are truly grotesque.
This is another installment of the slow burn between Blár and Kolfinna. I feel like I am slowly melting due to this one. I really wish they would just admit their feelings for crying out loud. But alas, the slow burn will be worth it.
The only thing I would have to say is that this is torture in this book. It was a little unexpected but it didn’t want me to vomit or anything like that. But, a trigger warning is all the same.
The only thing I have to say is that this is a different pacing than the first book. It is certainly a lot slower than the first action-packed The Ruins of the Heartless Fae. Wasn’t terrible at all, it was still good, just doesn’t have the same action I liked in the first one.
I can’t wait to continue on to the next book in the series because there was a MAJOR CLIFF HANGER at the end. My gosh, keep me on my toes will ya?
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I have recieved this ARC and am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book is impossible to put down. It captivated me so much that I started reading it less than 48 hours ago and I just finished it now at 4am—on a weekday!
Kolfinna is not the stereotypical fae we all know, she struggled with body image, imposter syndrome, and trying to make herself small to please the people around her. I’m so happy with the pacing of the story, it wasn’t a fade to black wherein the next chapter she had everything figured out. No, she took her time and learned from her mistakes. It was incredibly relatable, Maham’s writing style made me feel like I was part of her journey to self discovery too.
Blár showing more of his affectionate character was truly the cherry on top for us fantasy romance junkies. The satisfaction from the slowwwww burnnnn you might ask? *chef’s freakin kiss* 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I must say if you do pay close attention to key details you can tell what happens next on some bits. But overall, it’s a solid read and I can’t wait for the next one!
Authors really do love to make their characters and readers alike go through immense pain. What the fxck. I wanted to dive into the book and whisk Kolfinna away.
Also, Kolfinna's a better person than I am. If the shxt that happened to her, happened to me, I'd slaughter everyone there... slowly and painfully. Sis couldn't catch a break (╥﹏╥)
She needed better friends and allies as well. Blar was the best and most helpful, while the rest needed to go. 😒
The one thing that I absolutely hated the most was in the last chapter. I get why she did it and she was also basically bamboozled into agreeing, but UGH.
I was tempted to give this a 1-star rating because of that, but that's not entirely fair since I enjoyed the book.
This is book 2 of the Heartless and the Wicked series. Kolfinna has had to face so many hard times. I feel for her so much. She has lost what little confidence she had in book one and really struggles with fitting in in book 2 which I think we can all relate to sometime in our lives. I found myself internally screaming at her to get some confidence and start fighting back!! I am loving the extreme slow burn that is happening between her and Blar. And the ending omg. It leaves you wanting to find out more. I am really looking forward to the next book. I have to find out what happens and I have to know more about that plot twist! I am cheering Kolfinna on and I hope we can see her confidence grow!
This was a very good book, not as great as the first one was though. It felt like a whole lot of filler and that its whole purpose was to just set up the next book. You did not see a lot of character growth, adventure or even excitement which is what made you love the first book so much. I still very much love what this author has created, great story, fantastic characters, and easy to follow magic system, I just wish this book had more depth to it. I’m very excited for the next book and hope it follows the same pattern of adventure as the first book did.

I definitely liked this book more than the first one. The characters seemed more raw- I couldn’t help but want Kolfinna to grow stronger. Her insecurities wore on me, but again it would seem improbable to be a strong person when those circumstances govern your life. It’ll be great to see her develop further. I can’t wait for the next book. Maham, please don’t keep us waiting!
I could guess where the plot was headed, but that didn’t stop the satisfaction from spreading through me when certain scenes unfolded. Partial white hair with shadowy powers - damn, that’s cool. Add to that a strong ass commander for a father who may or may not be evil. The story just gets better. Hybrid powers unlocked- maybe?
Hinting at a future marriage ritual between a certain frost mage and a maybe-hybrid. Yes, please. Can’t wait for that union.
Blàr is just so dependable and that makes him all the more loveable. I can’t help but want to know what he’s thinking. His POV for certain scenes from this book would be most interesting. I’d be keen for sure.
To summarise, this book definitely surprised me and I can’t help but despair over the wait for the next one.

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC copy of this book and I loved it. When some authors write a sequel to the book you are left disappointed but Maham has managed to give me the same feeling I felt while reading the first book. I can already tell this series is going to go far with the way Mahram is able to successfully build the world of the book and the relationship between the characters. I can't wait for the next book already 😫
This series deserves so much more hype. It's so good and I thought this was an amazing continuation of the story. There was a decent amount of plot progression, and we got to know Kolfinna, Blar, and other characters in a much deeper way.
I'm FULLY rooting for Kolfinna - but girl!! Why do you care about the humans ahh! She needs to run away with Blar and leave everyone else to their fate. Kolfinna was treated terribly by everyone in this - she's doing her part to help her country, she's trying to be a Royal Guard, and everyone is working against her. I actually even dislike her friends - no one can truly understand what she's going through, but her friends aren't even trying. They brush her feelings and literal terror being in the situation she's in right under the rug. That's one thing that I almost dislike about this story - Kolfinna truly has no one. Even Blar is barely there for her - and that's supposed to be our MMC? Honestly, this was depressing at times because we are so pulled into the story I cannot help but feel what Kolfinna feels. It's amazing, but also so stressful and heartbreaking.
There are so many twists and turns in this - I truly could not guess what would happen next. Truly the writing is amazing and I'm shocked this book hasn't blown up already. You can tell the author has put a lot of thought into all her characters, their motivations, and how that ties into the plot. It's all connected beautifully.
⭐️5⭐️ First off I HATE Hilda, like with a burning passion. I also really don’t like Sijur, I think he’s a snake. Kolfinna is treated so cruelly, it made me physically sick to my stomach. She didn’t do anything wrong, she was trying her absolute best to help the kingdom, but the hunters and everyone else villainized her for just existing. Also I knew she was special! And it was revealed to her (not everyone) in such a creative way. Can we take a moment to fully appreciate Blár? He’s such an amazing character, and he has it bad for Kolfinna. He did so much for her by just giving her his coat infront of everyone (in the first book) and she didn’t even realize the level of protection that gave her. I want things to work out for them SO BAD. This is such a slow burn (much like the kindreds curse saga by Penn Cole) and I love every second of it. I loved everything about this book, I was hanging off of every word. How am I supposed to wait until March for book 3?!
“I came here on this mission because I couldn’t stop thinking about you. During the Eventyrslot ruins, you surprised me in many ways. I kept thinking about the way you sucked that dreki into a gaping hole with your runes, how you were adamant about freeing that crazy hag Revna, how quick you were to learn runes, and how you faced me headfirst even though you were scared shitless of me. I wanted to get to know you better and I’m glad I came here for that. Because seeing you now, I think I want to get to know you even more.”~Blár vilulf
I had the absolute pleasure of ARC reading The Frost Soldier and the Gilded Duty by Maham Fatemi, and it was just as good as the first book, if not better!! You already know I loved that one, but this one had me on the edge of my seat, and turning the pages as fast as I could. I couldn’t read it fast enough!
There are SO many twists and turns!! I was completely shocked throughout most of it! And this book seriously has it all: all the action, banter, and the sarcasm! 🫠🔥 Blár is perfect, as always. Kolfinna is awkward and clumsy and is, by far, one of my favorite FMCs of all time! I adore her, and I adore them together!
“If you think I woke up at the ass-crack of dawn for you to quit on me, then you’re sorely mistaken. You’re going to train with me whether I have to drag your grumpy, albeit lovely, ass or not.” 🫠
You get to learn more about Blár in this one, and Kolfinna taps into her fae powers in an epic way! It is the perfect romantasy book with a slow burn, enemies to friends to lovers, and the wintery ambiance is SO good! This book ends on the ✨️perfect✨️ cliffhanger, and I literally cannot wait for the next one! This is definitely one of my favorite series of all time, and I can't wait to reread them already!
A huge thank you to Maham Fatemi for the eARC! These are my honest thoughts and opinions.
In the first book of the Heartless and the Wicked series we met Kolfinna, a Fae living in a land of humans where Fae are hated, hunted and murdered. To try and gain some respect and safety Kolfinna joined the Royal Guards. In this second story we find that Kolfinna's plan has not been entirely successful as she is bullied and persecuted within the Royal Guards. When the opportunity comes to go on a mission Kolfinna jumps at the chance to go and earn some respectability, especially seeing as Blar her friend from the military, and a renowned Black Rank, will be there too. What follows is a thrill a minute page turner. I thought the first book was good but this a step up again - a great read.

I just don't know where to start. The slow burn romance in this book is just as adorable as it is frustrating, all in a good way (the way that first forehead kiss made me screach pterodactyl-style is just unforgettable). The book fills you with emotions and despite the slow start, it is filled with action. There were certain pages where I could not even differ between Kolfinna's and my own emotions! I also have to admire Maham Fatemi for vast knowledge of various mythology and mythical beasts. Some of them can add a touch of gore and tension to the book, which I enjoy so much! Overall, I can't wait for the continuation of the series as well for the upcoming books.
You always hope the second book in a series will be just as good or better than the first and this did not disappoint! Kolfinna is now part of the Royal Guard but finds she has to continually prove herself. While also dealing with hatred for the Fae and those who want to take her place. Blar approaches her with a request to check out the latest threat. Monsters at the borders. I love the slow burn romance and all the twists and turns! I couldn’t put this book down and I need to know what happens next! If you haven’t already, Read This Book! !!
Honest arc review: such a great storyline! I can’t wait to see what the 3rd book entails considering where this one left off. I really appreciated how we got to see the struggles Kolfinna went through with trying to fit into the Royal Guard and how that progressed. I feel like Kolfinna was much more timid in this book, like Blar had pointed out, she lost some of her fiery-ness. Also this slow burn is killingggggg me 😭 but overall, great book and can’t wait for the next!

I had the pleasure of receiving an arc for this book! After reading the first book, I was hooked.
The pace of this book was so different than the first, and showed a lot more of the actual world that they’re going to have to live in when they aren’t off doing secret missions (but don’t worry, there are still missions, and there are still battles).
Kolfinna training with the guard and the obstacles she has to overcome to “fit in” are not what she expected them to be. She struggles to figure out how to live and work being a fae, without Blár around to stand up for her. She blames those in power for not making her life perfect, but she prevails nonetheless.
Blár has finally started to really show her that he cares for her, but of course, our girl Kolfinna can’t even begin to understand what he feels for her. Their slow burn is killing me! I wish she would trust him and confide in him more.
I’m so interested to see where Kolfinna’s story goes next, especially with the bargain she strikes. Can’t wait for book 3 already!
I am absolutely loving this series! This is the 2nd book in The Heartless and The Wicked series and takes place a few months after book 1. Kolfinna may have won her position as a new Royal Guard but is still finding she has to prove herself everyday. When a new mission comes her way she believes it could be what she needs to prove herself to everyone. Instead she finds that magic beasts might be the least of her problems. I adore Kolfinna and Blár might be frosty 😉 but he is definitely swoon worthy. Magic, mystery, betrayal, and that slow burn 🔥 has me so excited for book 3.
I received a review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I gave the first book a 5 star. This I give a 4, for minor reasons where I am confused about the main character. Firstly! I really did love this book. I'm heavily involved in this story and eagerly waiting for the next book. I lobe there is no Insta love and its this slow burning adventure and suspense. So if your into that. I highly recommend this series.
Now the minor thoughts and confusions.
In the first book the MC was so sure of herself. She was strong. I'm confused on the beginning of this book she is this scared and terrified women who can't figure out how to be better. It seemed like one big pity party and that everything should be handed to her, bc she proved herself at the ruins.
At the end I started to understand where the author was taking it. And it started to make sense. But I had to read 300 pages to get to it. So it was a slow start for me.
The MC also relies heavily on "protection" from anyone willing. Why didn't her friends try to help train her. Show her the basics of sparring. Instead she is beat down. It just didn't make sense when she has her friends but no one would help teach her.
Again I did figure it out in the end why the story was going. It just didn't "flow" as beautifully as the first book. With everything revealed at the end that I was really not expecting that plot twist. I am thinking the next book will be more action packed and hopefully a love to start. Or that's my theory.
I’m so grateful to Maham Fatemi for letting me read an ARC of the YA fantasy romance, The Frost Soldier and the Gilded Duty! This is the glorious second instalment in The Heartless and the Wicked series, following on from The Ruins of the Heartless Fae…
Kolfinna has been working so hard to be a Royal Guard, ever since she came back from the Eventyrslot ruins. But with the other guards craving her downfall, Kolfinna knows she has to work doubly hard to save herself from a terrible ending. And with the Hunter’s Association petitioning to be part of the military once more, Kolfinna has to prove her worth as a fae or risk death at their hands. As ancient monsters come through the border, is this Kolfinna’s chance to show the King that she deserves protection? Will the enigmatic Blár once again be the key to her salvation? And what happens when a terrible secret is unleashed at the border?
Maham’s writing has completely exceeded my expectations in terms of unique creatures, deadly adventures & the simmering slow burn between Kolfinna & Blár. There’s more danger, more betrayal, more EVERYTHING in this tale...
This was an amazing continuation of The Heartless and Wicked series. This book focused more heavily on further developing the political plot of the story, which was very well done and kept me engulfed in the story the whole time. This is not to say that the action packed battles and scenes were lacking in the slightest either, along with the continued blossoming of Blar and Kolfinna's relationship. The story was wonderfully balanced and I didn't want to set it down as it continued to twist and turn with new revelations and characters that keep you guessing what side they are truly on and what their true intentions are. I am in love with these characters and am once again left on the edge of my seat just wanting more after finishing. If you are looking for an action-packed series that keeps you wondering what will happen next with plenty of magic, power, and beasts, this is a series you should definetly check out. Add all of this in with the tension of an enemies to lovers blooming relationship and a struggle for identity and you have this beautifully written fantasy. I have recieved this as an ARC and am leaving this review voluntarily.
We're back with more of Kolfinna and Blár! Following the events of the first book Kolfinna is finally made a Royal Guard. Unfortunately not everything is as nice as it seems as she is struggling immensly in this position. Her training is nearly non-existant and she gets treated horribly. When an opporunity for another mission arrives from the military, she takes it to prove herself to her peers and make them think more favourably towards the Fae. This book was a nice reprieve from the first book, a bit of a lull with some action inbetween and some very lovely scenes between Kolfinna and Blár. We're met with previoous friends who help her from time to time. Everything kind of accumilates at the end and some interesting reveals were made which make me look forward to the last book in this series!
Songs: Celestial, Dead of Night, Shadow Tree, Kingdom Fall, Oh My My
I had been holding off writing a review because this series is one of my favorites. I love this series, and the first book is one of my favorite reads for this year. I'm addicted to these characters! I am still intrigued, and there's a need to know more, now. However, I also have a little disappointment in the characters and their development. This book provides more detailed insight on character development, but I don't think it flowed as well. The changes may have been too stark for me in contrast to book 1, like with Blar. Kolfinna annoys me a lot in this book, too, but I want to know how she changes in the next book.
I skim read this because, honestly, the racism and discrimination she faced despite helping the Guards was difficult to read about.
What really annoyed me is that although it was obvious that Blar didn't trust his boss, Sijur, and Kolffina had complete trust in Blar, she still chose to sign a contract with Sijur for 15 years of servitude.
Seriously?
I got fed up with reading about how Kolffina is treated awfully, and yet she continues to help her oppressors in the hope that she can carve out a decent life for herself. I understand she doesn't have many options available to her, but I don't want to read about more racism. It's just not my kinda book, clearly!

Went into this not expecting to become this hooked to the storyline and the characters but the first book hooked me with it's fast paced changes in settings and adventures (let's call them that loosely) and I just had to continue to know what happened with my faves. Wasn't expecting it to be a ya book o though it was more of a romantasy vibe, but i love it this way even more. The third installment can not come soon enough.
The second book in this amazing story. Kolfinna just wants to stay alive and fit in. Now part of the Royal Guards, but it seems no matter how hard she works, it’s never good enough. When presented with a new mission that brings her back together with Blar, she takes it. Monsters, betrayal, and revelations ensue during this mission and in the aftermath once they return to the capital. This story advances their slow burn romance and Kolfinnas story nicely. Looking forward to book 3.
Kolfinna Kolfinna Kolfinna…….this book was slower paced but I can understand why. It’s the ramp up to book three and giving us the background information we need. I would have liked the relationship to be a little farther along but this truly is a slow burn, enemies to lovers and I’m hoping we get some pay off in the end.
My question is……..where is Yrsa 🧐 she got some explaining to do 🤣
More adventures of Kolfinna and Blar. I absolutely loved the magical beasts in this book. The writing makes you feel like you are a part of the battle and gives all the feelings with it. Plus, I'm living for the slooow burn! This book was the perfect companion to book one, and I can not wait to continue with The Heartless and the Wicked series!
I have received this ARC and am leaving this review voluntarily
What can I say? This second book was well worth the wait! The plot, the characters, everything was just right! Kolfinna is just an exceptional character. I can't wait to read the next book!
