This is where the series starts to drop off for me. It seems that the players change a bit. The location changes but the story is still the same thing just rehashed. Additionally it seems to me that Emily begins to evoke less respect from me as a reader. How many times can the heroine put herself in harms way before the reader begins to wonder why she never learns from her mistakes? Also I want to (and did) like the character Jordan. I find starting with this book he becomes annoying and disrespectful to Emily and Rick's relationship. I can't really put my finger on what happened but I found it much harder to wade through this without feeling like I have read the same story in the previous two installments. I am still rooting for Emily and Rick. I still want to enjoy the series as much as I did in the beginning and I continue to hope to see some character growth rather than stagnation.

This is a terrific read from start to finish. The writing is impeccable and the story is fresh and tight. Emily stone is fragile and tough. She dispays a vulnerability most protaganists aren't allowed to expose. It's nice to read a story which doesn't follow a formula. Very solid thriller.

Review of this book.

Your books just sleep getting better. This was one of the most graphic books to date Definitely not for the faint of heart. You have probably been exposed to this type of nightmare in your clinical studies. As a former nurse and EMT, I still have some very vivid memories that will probably be with me forever. You just have to put them away and press on. Your adept way of laying out evidence and clues is uncanny. The ending was a total shock and I am still in awe. This in one ending that I can truely say I never saw coming. Your skill at manipulating the clues and false clues keeps getting more refined. You are truely a gifted author. People in the police departments would benefit from reading your books. Too often the vision and mind set of learning becomes tunnel vision. The person does not bother to look outside the box. There are far too many cold cases that need a fresh set of eyes looking at the evidence with a different perspective. Easy to say from the perspective of a nurse. I helped with a diagnosis on a patient from just an odor that I detected but could not place. Many people were exposed to the illness and even family members and friends had to be tested for a year before we felt the threat was over and gone. Sometimes it is not just the police that bring resolution to a dangerous puzzle. I have always enjoyed mysteries, trying to solve them before the end of the book. You are a superior writer with an unlimited talent that just keeps growing. Do not ever stop writing these fantastic mystery books.

Close call for Emily, or final call?????

Toughest case Emily has ever faced. Who is sacrificing women to ancient God's on a beautiful Hawaiian island? Will they be able to catch him in time save Emily's life? And there is the problem of Lew Lewinsky who killed Em's parents when she was 12 and is back to finish what he started all those years ago! Em doesn't know he escaped from prison in California, Rick never told her! He thought he was protecting her, but was he? Thrilling, terrifying and heartbreaking. Highly recommended.

Gripping and excting

Another great Emily Stone book. Very suspenseful. The only thing that I am a little tired of is how Emily is right on the physical edge of dying and gets rescued just in time, although it is dramatic and makes the story more satisfying for the person who may be new to the Emily Stone stories, I'm amazed at all the close calls and scars that must be all over her face and body. Still, I enjoyed this book and do recommend it to anyone who likes to see criminals get what's coming to them.

Anyone else would be dead! I have just finished Book 3 and slowly but surely the writer is going out of her mind. Emily and Rick go from one harrowing escapade to another seemingly in every chapter ( or so it seems).
I really don't need the characters to almost die every other page. Would be happier with a slower story and more energy put into Emily's hunt for child predators.

Excellent story - Disappointing editing

Really enjoyed the storyline but enjoyment spoiled by very poor editing. Wrong words used which completely confused story, very difficult to understand at times. I'msure author would be devastated to hear how badly her book was treated. Please try to get message to editor/proof readers to do better job.

Dark Mind (Emily Stone Series Book 3) by Jennifer Chase

Another mysterious chase by Emily, Jordan, and Rick. They arrive on an island to chase down a paedophile ring and encounter a serial killer and much more. A new friend they happen to meet. The bubbles and tangles get started. A must read.

ridiculous

Wow. Started out about child abduction and none of the books have detail, character development or anything remotely intelligent. We read these books to be entertained so usually I’m not that judgmental but this is the last one I can stomach. I’m sure Emily will survive. Read Helen Fields if you want to really enjoy some satisfying female fiction.

Stunningly twisted

Very disturbing murders and events keep new friends and acquaintances expanding the group . This book was a bit carried away with close calls. I liked previously that the writing wasn't so unbelievable but is touching on that now. Please reel it in a bit.

This was an intriguing, complex, and intense thriller that will hook you from the start, and keep you guessing until the very end. It's a definite must read book and series.

For once I didn't know who the killer was!

I enjoyed this book because usually, although I like crime/ mystery books, can figure out who the killer is rather quickly. This one actually surprised me! I also enjoyed the island references.

There's a rather blunt saying in my family that has served me well through the years. "Listen to people to who know what the hell they're talking about." In other words, authenticity gets you the best results.

Need medical advice? Ask a doctor. Car making a funny noise? Ask a mechanic. Want a competent, intelligent crime novel? Seek out an author with a background in criminology.

Jennifer Chase is just that author. She has the real-world degrees to back up her writing. I instantly became a fan after reading some of her posts over on CrimeSpace. She picks apart everything from traits of psychopaths to knowing when a crime scene is staged. I should be paying to read this stuff. She's a classroom unto herself.

When it comes to writing fiction, it's a sure bet Chase's background shines through. Dark Mind , the latest novel in her Emily Stone series, again demonstrates why Chase stands out in the crowded field of crime authors.

Dark Mind follows cops-turned-vigilantes Emily Stone and maybe-more-than-a-friend Rick to Hawaii. The novel explodes with action right from the start. Emily and Rick rescue an abducted girl from a disgusting lodge in the forest. In the process, they kick the crap out of some pedophiles.

Note to author Chase: As a reader, that is a satisfying way to start a novel. A child is saved from the hell of sex slavery and the bad guys get their faces kicked to a dent.

(Actually, Emily restrains herself from kicking one of the pedos in the face. Most crime authors would've had her do it. It shows the care Chase puts into her Emily character.)

Emily and Rick then have to deal with the other menace on the island: the lackadaisical police force. The two sides butt heads as it becomes apparent the abductions didn't end at that lodge.

The action is constant, yet Chase still weaves her criminology background into the tempo. You could write a police training manual off Emily's thoughts and choices alone. I felt like I learned something from Dark Mind , something I can't say about a lot of novels.

However, these bonuses come at a trade-off. The novel needed a keen edit to tighten things up. Many sentences stretched into paragraphs, which slowed down that great action. Redundant descriptions stopped my eye, and again distracted from the action. "Unknown stranger" would be an example.

The dialogue seemed melodramatic at times. For example, prior to rescuing the girl from the lodge, either Rick or Emily (I forget which one off the top of my head) turns to the other and says, "Let's bring Cassie Thompson home...safely." It's a made-for-TV line that doesn't serve well a novel aiming for authenticity.

On that note, passive sentence structures leaned on adverbs to move them along. Yeah, yeah, call me the wet blanket, but these are things that I noticed as an author. Readers aren't as inclined to pick up on them.

What they will notice is a gripping story that starts with action, continues with action and ends with action. Readers won't get bored with Dark Mind . They'll finish it in a couple of days like I did.

Give Dark Mind a shot. It's the third in the Emily Stone series, but I had no problem jumping into it.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to apply some of what I learned from Emily Stone.

Title: Dark Mind
Author: Jennifer Chase
ISBN: 978098253648
Publisher: JEC Press

The tension mounts from the first page as the humidity rises, the air is thick with acrid smells and the suspect folds when vigilante Detective Rick Lopez penetrates the outer persona of this suspect, leaving no room or margin for error as the life of a nine-year-old child hangs in the balance. Partner Emily Stone watches the interrogation. Standing down until just the right moment when she enters the room, springs a picture of the kidnapped victim on this poor excuse for a human. Dark Mind is a psychological thriller that will take the reader deep inside the mind of child porn slave traders, a serial killer and a peaceful island whose inner most volcanic core will rock equal to that of an active volcano’s eruption.

Two young girls have been kidnapped and the skeletal remains of others found as Rick and Emily fight the smells, the filth, the assailants and the fear that they might not get there in time to save these two young girls. The suspense builds and the quest is on as Rick and Emily race an unknown clock desperately praying they get there in time. No backup, no support from the local police Emily faces her worst fears, as she is attacked and alone without any weapon hoping Rick will sense her danger and come to her rescue.

Sergeant Lani Candena would become embroiled in this case and the others that will now come his way. Cases he would never forget and some that would haunt his dreams forever as author Jennifer Chase brings to light the issues of child pornography, slave trade and sacrificial murder. The graphic descriptions and the use of sensory words describing the scenery and the events taking place adds to the storyline, the sense of urgency and helps bring the reader directly into the story along with the main characters.

Emily and Rick are in Hawaii on the pretense of being on vacation when they get roped into more than they really bargained for. When they uncover the child porn ring, a kidnapper and then become involved in the murder of a photographer of an Internet web magazine, Sergeant Candena becomes suspicious as Emily turns up more often than not at every crime scene. Carolyn Sax is the serial killer’s first victim as he fights the darkness and the fear when grabbed from behind, injected with something and the rest so horrific it would send shockwaves throughout this peaceful island and the killer has only just begun.

Bad dreams and nightmares plague Emily Stone as the author recounts what happened to her when serial killer Leo Brown went after her. Little does she know that he is not done with her and that Rick received an email from him letting him know she was in danger. Black magic, human sacrifices and child porn, author Jennifer Chase takes the reader on many roller coaster rides in this third in the Emily Stone series.

Meet former FBI investigator Jordan Smith who joins Emily and Rick to help find this serial killer who has struck again. As the pieces seem to be falling into place and the body count rises they find themselves embroiled in a case that has the all the earmarks of her past. But, when Emily visits the crime scene where Carolyn’s body was found, Sergeant Lani becomes suspicious and things begin to change. Meeting a stranger during her investigation she is warned that things might take a dangerous turn. Another murder is uncovered and although the mayor does not want Lani involved he catches the case.

But, truths come out and deceits unfold as Lani learns more Emily and her team than she wanted to share. Each time he cases a case she seems to be there and his suspicions prove out as another rapist is caught but the real killer is still at large.

Every step of the way someone seems to be ahead of Emily and strange events happen to stop her cold and the police sergeant seems front and center each time as Rick and Jordan explore other avenues and the same things happen to them. Connections to the police department, corruption you would not believe and a more than one killer to catch. Author Jennifer Chase takes the reader into the world of black magic, sorcery, child porn, murder and the Dark Mind of s serial killer with an ending you just won’t see coming with a final twist that let’s you know that there is much more in store for Emily and Rick. Where the next case leads them only author Jennifer Chase knows and we all hope to find out soon.

Article first published as Book Review: Dark Mind by Jennifer Chase on Blogcritics.

The beauty of Hawaii is legendary with the island of Kauai, known as the garden isle, being one of the most exotic. In such a place of beauty and solitude, murder should have no place, and yet no one place remains immune to the intemperance of death.

In Dark Mind by Jennifer Chase, we visit the island paradise with her protagonist Emily Stone. Emily is not there for the beauty though; she is there following the lead of a missing young girl taken by slave traders. She is not alone however; she is accompanied by her partner and lover, Rick Lopez. Both have backgrounds in law enforcement but they now follow leads to stop the unthinkable. In their haste to save this young girl, they come under the radar of local law enforcement.

Sergeant Lani Candena is new to the force and is fighting his own battles. There are undercurrents within the Island department, and he finds he must go outside of his sources to search for the truth. Unsure what to do about the interlopers from California, he finds them to believable. As they find the young girl, it seems like now everyone can relax and enjoy a real vacation in the islands.

Little do they know that there is a serial killer now stalking the young women of this most pristine of islands. As bodies begin to turn up, butchered and posed in the most brutal of ways, Emily finds herself in the middle. The murderer is someone close to the islands, using his tracking abilities and island lore to choose and offer his victims as sacrifice. Emily cannot leave the islands until this killer is stopped. With the help of Rick, Sergeant Candena and another friend from off island, they take you deep into the paradise to find the most sadistic of killers. Can they find him before he takes another victim? What drives Emily to put her life on the line time after time? Will the answers serve to save further victims?

Chase’s characters are strong and bold, unafraid to face their fears as well as the unknown. Emily has heart, and yet she often wears her feelings where others can see them. She is very in love with Rick and they interplay only adds to the danger and beauty of this work. The killer is unexpected, and his mind is a bit warped. The evil inherent in his thoughts is all about sacrifice and what his place is. Each character is well fleshed out and quite human, yet they are courageous as well. They put lives of others ahead of themselves and refuse to give up.

The beauty of the island paradise is shown throughout the story; you can see the jungle and the waterfalls. You can feel the danger in the quite of the area, but you can also feel the breathtaking panorama, even during dangerous scenes. The heat of romance sizzles and the danger of the events create coldness inside. The mix is very exciting.

I would recommend this book for the romance lover but for the serious thriller reader as well. The suspense is superb and well written, and the romance is electric. This would be a great book for the reader in your home.

This book was received free from the author. All opinions are my own based on my reading and understanding of the material.

Vigilante detective Emily Stone and partner Rick Lopez are on the pursuit of a child slavery ring that abducted a nine-year-old girl from San Francisco, which leads them to the paradise island of Kauai. The leads they have take them to an out-of-the way ramshackle of a building, where not only do they save the girl they went to rescue, but also another little girl that was being held captive. With the child slavery ring busted and the abductors in jail, Emily and Rick thought they would enjoy the island paradise ... that is until the brutal sacrificial murders of a couple of young women has a serial killer on the loose, and Emily and Rick find themselves back in business with their covert investigation to hunt down the serial killer. Will Emily and Rick find the serial killer before he strikes again? Will Emily and Rick be placing themselves in danger? Will their latest covert investigation lead them to a possible deadly outcome on the island paradise?

Dark Mind is a fast-paced chilling crime thriller that will captivate you and leave you sitting on the edge of your seat as you turn the pages. The storyline is well written, the author weaves a story that is intriguing and keeps the reader guessing what will happen next with every gripping twist and turn. The attention to detail in regard to the crime investigation is first rate, the author utilizes her experience in the criminology and forensic areas to provide a story that diehard crime thriller fans crave. The description of Kauai's setting is breathtaking, it took me back to when I vacationed there many years ago. The characters are realistic, their complex personalities and interactions with each other gave the story depth and made it that much more powerful and compelling. I loved Emily and Rick's characters, their strong personalities and dedication to solve terrible crimes had me cheering for them as they covertly investigated the serial killings. This story is the third in the Emily Stone series, and even though I haven't read the first two books, each story is written to stand alone.

As a fan of crime and murder suspense thrillers, Dark Mind satisfied everything that I expect to find in a really good suspense thriller. It gave me goose bumps, it made me gasp and cringe, it made me hold my breath, and most importantly it drew me into the investigation along with Emily and Rick. I have become an Emily Stone fan, and will have to go back and read the first two books in the series! I would highly recommend that fans of the murder mystery and suspense thriller genres read this book and the Emily Stone series, you won't be left disappointed!

I was thrilled with how this story starts out, and how it never seems to die down, always fast paced and definitely heart pounding!
Jennifer Chase has a twisted imagination, (a 5 star imagination;), and a fascinating writing style, that keeps you wanting more! I guess it helps a bit that this is certainly my speed, my most favorite genre of all. The story was perfect, very different setting, place then what I am used to, and the terror was genuine! I am not however much into series books, at least when it comes to detective stories, FBI, although this didn't bother me one bit. It sure isn't Nancy Drew, or for the faint of heart!
The story really moves and is filled with vicious descriptions, so if you aren't one to read a serial killer book that also goes through the eyes of the killer, you may not want to pick this up! (although you are missing out on a thrilling ride!) I have to say that I haven't seen this writing style before, and I was real impressed with the adjectives used, how they were placed and the blood curdling screams that I could actually hear while I read it. I particularly enjoyed the explicitly detailed descriptions of the killer, his thoughts, his tools, and the chapters that start out with the women who he was hunting, running, and trying to get away. You could feel and smell every tiny section of the victims mind, fear, what they saw, you have to almost wonder how in the world did someone write this in such a horrific way!!
The characters all fit, there was a rhyme and reason, and the chapters were brilliantly placed along with the story, I loved how they would bring you down at the end of each chapter as if you just came down to, just about a halt, from the 3 crazy, upside down, heart attack loops on a steel coaster, only to be ripped back up again and when the next chapter starts, you're going 70 mph back through those loops, but now backwards!!
I wanted so much to give this book 5 stars, and I just couldn't, the only issue I ever have with books like this is that there are so many I have read, that sometimes the actual story seems like I read it before. Or seen it before, (Kind of like Cold Case, CSI type stuff). Which is nothing wrong and sure doesn't take from this book! I believe the problem with the issue I actually have with "hearing or seeing this before" is that there are so many crime shows, serial killer mini series, books, that it is pretty hard to not have a story that is 100% original. Jennifer Chase chose the perfect place with good characters, and her writing style is well beyond the average for this genre. I have to recommend this to any fan of horror, detective, FBI, cop shows, movies or books, or anybody fascinated with the macabre, twisted, brutal mind of a killer.

CHARLOTTE'S REVIEW

Jennifer Chase’s ‘Dark Mind’ opens in a mixture of chaos, action and suspense, setting the tone for the rest of the novel. Although I struggled to keep up with which characters were which during the opening few chapters as there were so many being introduced at once, the tension that was created during the first couple of chapters held the promise of better things to come. I am happy to say that I was not disappointed.

The lack of character development at the beginning, which initially left me feeling like Chase wasn’t going to take her central characters beyond stereotypes, was soon rectified after the opening scenes and I quickly discovered that there was more to Emily and Rick than first met the eye. Emily’s nightmares made her more than the brave heroine she appears to be, allowing the reader to see past her tough outer shell and into the fears that shape her character.

However, what I really enjoyed about this novel was the dark undertones that ran through it. The gruesome murders that provide the main plot for the story, centering around the world of ritualistic killings, are delightfully creepy, sending shivers up my spine. The glimpses Chase gives us into the world of child abduction also gives the story another, darker dimension, emphasizing to the reader from the beginning that the world the story is set in is not a friendly one.

I would definitely recommend this book, not only to those who are already fans of this darker style of fiction, but also to those who are curious to try something new. Chase’s attention to detail, especially during scenes of high tension, really helps to set the scene and prepare the reader for the action to come. However, my favourite part of this novel is the fact that no matter which way you look, you are never sure who you can trust and who could be plotting against you.

This third addition to the Emily Stone series finds Emily and Rick Lopez on the beautiful island of Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands. Rick has given up his position as a police officer to join Emily in her undercover operation tracking serial killers with the emphasis on child abductors. Emily was a former police officer.

Rick and Emily are able to rescue a child that was kidnapped by slave brokers. When the police arrive at the scene, the couple meets Sergeant Lani Candena of the local police department.

The couple feel their trip has been successful and decide to stay on the island and enjoy a little vacation time. It isn’t long before they hear rumors of a vicious murder. Rick and Emily go to the scene of the crime and wait for the police to leave. Rick and Emily take a look at the scene. Once again they run up against Sergeant Lani Candena of the of the local police department.

Lani is an ambitious officer and when there is a second murder, he feels sure that he has a serial killer on his hands. The killings are staged in a horrible manner and Emily and Rick are convinced the killer must be a local resident. Lani’s superior officers in the department are more interested in making a profit for themselves in the shady deals they are involved in than finding the killer.

Derek McGraw, an old friend of Rick and Emily, joins the couple on the island. The three of them work on putting the few clues they have been able to put together in an attempt to locate the killer. Sgt. Candena is aware that the trio is very interested in the murders. He eventually convinces the group to work with him in an attempt to hunt down the killer.

The action in Dark Mind is non-stop. Emily is lucky to survive the hunt. This novel can be read as a stand-alone but I would also recommend Compulsion and Dead Game, the two previous Emily Stone novels.

Emily quickly find herself deep in the search for the killer who is stalking and brutally killing women, all the while trying to stay under the police radar. Dark Mind is very well written using wonderful descriptions and to transport you to the beautiful island of Kauai. Dark Mind was an easy book to read. By that I don’t mean the plot is without twists or turns, or the characters simple. I never had to push myself to read it, or regretted the time spent doing so. Each time I picked it up, I had to make myself stop reading and hurry to whatever was calling me away because I’d read longer than I should’ve.

The protagonist, Emily Stone, an ex-police officer, tracks serial killers and child abductors outside the investigations of authorities. Partnered with ex-police detective Rick Lopez, this story begins with them going to the Island of Kauai to rescue abducted teenage girls who would be sold into black market slavery. After this, they’re pulled into an investigation of a serial killer.

The story is well written. Ms. Chase fills the scenes using all the senses. The only problem I had with the story is it’s not fully explained how Emily became a renowned specialist of serial killers. Her skills at figuring out the profile of the killer are better than those of ex-FBI agent Jordan Smith who worked at the FBI Behavior Science Unit. He’s called in to help with the case. His character’s humor I enjoyed.

It’s also not explained how Emily and Rick support themselves while traveling around the country tracking down killers and abductors. This doesn’t take away from the story, but I did wonder. Also, the villains catch Emily by surprise several times that seemed out of character with someone portrayed as being so skilled in her work.

Other than that, this was an engaging read that kept me flipping the pages. The hunt for serial killer on Kauai is compounded by another serial killer hunting Emily. There’s several tense scenes where the reader isn’t sure which killer is attacking her.

This was the first time I’ve read one of Ms. Chase’s books. But it won’t be the last.
