From Manjunath to Manjamma: The Inspiring Life of a Transgender Folk Artist

Experience is the best teacher and autobiographies are the best lessons for the society. When I pre-ordered the book, it was more about the unknown about the famous Padma Shri awardee from Karnataka as well as to read the first book of one of my favourite columnists from Swarajya. Little did I comprehend on the perspective altering ride I was about to embark on.
Matha Manjamma Jogathi’s story is one about the ultimate triumph of human spirit against all odds, defying societal and human constraints & becoming a beacon of hope for a community. Transgenders are perhaps not well understood as the constituents of the society and often leads to their ill-treatment. To read about the life journey of a person who embraced the inner calling and succeed in life against all odds is definitely an eye-opening experience. Pride and Inclusion are some of the most discussed topics in a modern society. However, for truly including a community, one needs to first understand the inner world of the same, define the problem statements & then work towards sustainable, scalable solutions. This book goes a long way in opening up the world of Jogammas / Transgenders and provides a detailed insider look into their world.
Autobiographies can be self-laudatory and be employed to paint a rosier picture. One can’t really find fault with that. However, to be brutally honest, bare their own self, share their own insecurities, fallings & own up to their misadventures, requires a different mental fortitude and strength, which Matha Manjamma has demonstrated with aplomb. Some of the details like the travails of her mother when she embraces her identity including certain gory details or admitting to her own adventures with Cupid can leave the reader astounded for a moment. However, there are couple of instances that can churn the inners a bit. Reality, no matter however dark it is, is still the truth. One of the standout moments of the book is when Matha Manjamma owns up to her mistake w.r.t. her Guru & emphasis the importance of respecting age old customs like respecting one’s parents or Gurus.
This book also introduces the world of Jogamma, their cultural intricacies, challenges & more importantly the various art-forms that have given a new identity to them. The intermix of Divinity and Art is definitely interesting and quite frankly, revealing to read, specially for the city bred ones. The struggles of the past leading to life lessons and transforming into progressive newer measures is definitely assuring as one looks forward. Matha Manjamma as the torch bearer of the community has ensured that there is enough focus from Govt to uplift the community, while emphasising the need to educate the community and integrate them in main stream. The last appendix about death is quite depressing and I sincerely hope that there is a permanent resolution to this aspect of their lives. Dignity in death is very important, not matter who or where.
Harsha Bhat as the co-author has done a wonderful work in capturing Manjamma’s life in an eloquent manner. Till the very end of the book, one wouldn’t realise that there is a co-author and only feels the presence of Manjamma’s voice talking with the reader.
In the end, if one truly feels passionate about diversity & inclusion or want to know the world of Jogammas, this is a definite MUST READ book in your list.

From Manjunath to Manjamma is an inspiring and powerful story of Manjamma who defied all odds thrown at her to become one of the most influential artists of our country. Manjanma grew up seeing the ugly side of the society and as a transgender, had to overcome many trials and tribulations. And yet she has the kindest heart, one that we often see in our mothers who tend to their children with love and gentleness. Her journey from a simple village lad to an exceptional artist and the president of Karnataka Janapada Academy is incredibly inspiring.
Manjamma certainly did not have an easy life while growing up. When she slowly transitioned from Manjunath to Manjamma Jogathi, she had to face the wrath and hatred of her family and also of those in her community. Yet, in the face of adversity, she stood unwaveringly strong and found her art amidst others like her. This lesser known yet important dance form called Jogathi Nritya saved her from the darkest times of her life and it was this that eventually made her receive the prestigious Padma Shri Award in 2021. But the decades of struggle only made her softer to the pain of others. Like a true mother, she senses the hurt in others and looks after them like her own.
This is an emotional book, the kind that’ll move you to tears and make you laugh as you read about her victory. It tugs at your heart when pain is inflicted upon her. I must confess that even though I'm from Karnataka, I have never heard of this distinguished personality called Manjamma Jogathi before I read this book.
An act of motherly love of warding off evils looming on the then, President of India Ramnath Kovind made her an overnight sensation on Social Media.
Manjamma Jogathi fondly reminisces about her bond with her guru Kalavva, whom she credits with popularizing the art form to even city-bred individuals.
Manjamma Jogathi in a candid fashion speaks about their tryst with love and how she defied Jogathi norms and dared to love. She also talks about being bowed down by their responsibilities and forbidden to seek pleasures like other humans.
From Manjunath to Manjamma is a powerful account of how art can empower an entire community whilst emphasizing how some traditions have been indispensable in changing societal norms.
The last chapter was heart-wrenching as it rendered how a Jogathi's last cries went unanswered when her family refused to give her a decent burial even after encashing her savings and wealth.
Props to Harsha Bhat for breathing life into Manjamma's story in a language that is accessible to all.

First things first - I am honored and satisfied beyond measure to have read this story - there have been bits where I have cried, had gooseflesh, felt outrage and so much more. To have one human go through so much, I must say this is inspirational beyond measure.

Manjamma 'Amma', yes, I have to call you that, because this is in english, you cant read it but I hope at some point you will realize that your story has brought strength to me too.

The story starts with Manjamma being called for the news of the bestowing of the 4th highest civilian award Padma Shri to Manjamma and how she totally thought it was a prank! What follows is as to truly put a story of a 'pavement to President's court.' Born Manjunath Shetty to 21 siblings, gradually the women inside Manju started dominating his daily life. I love how this transition is associated with divine intervention from the start and mother Goddess associated with this. The autobiography goes on to tell the many hardships faced in those times ( not very far in history, mind it) by the child, how he was beaten, neglected, to throw out the taking over of the Goddess. These physiological hormonal phenomenons now known were considered not normal then.

We see how gradually his family accepts he is a 'Jogathi' and the self liberating change although emotionally toll taking is done. The book is very very well sectioned, bears absolute truths (rare in most such books) and is written in lucid language by Harsha. The 'Jogathi' culture is very well elucidated and I really enjoyed reading about the rituals and the association with divinity through the culture. Towards the later half of the book Manjamma tells us how modernisation has led to the declining of the people coming into the clan and how it is hard to maintain the traditional lifestyle now.

Her deep set love for the Jogathi art form starts early in life and step by step we see her growth and association with her guru Kulavva, the association between the both in true sense is shown. Love the section on finding love too.

Overall this is a powerful tale of finding ones identity and standing for it.

I reallt like watching of Shark Tank India, and when I stumbled upon Manjamma's pitch for her brand Kineer, I was impressed by her positive attitude and visionary approach to benefitting her transgender community.
This led me to eagerly grab a copy of her book.

I don't know how to rate this book. I have been a follower of Amma Manjamma for many years(even before she received the Padma Shree award) and I always respected her. And her life story deserves more than 5 stars.
But the writing does not do justice to the achievements of Manjamma. The co-author fails to make the read, a poignant one nor does a good job in making it inspirational. The co-author does not even detail the art form which is the entire identity of the Jogathis.

A battle of courage won with determination and grit. It's nevertheless to say Manjamma's life was a paragon of struggle and the utmost example of courage to be read, finally, she is here to tell us about the battle, about the story of building a folk dancer of distinction which is a story of a battle for acceptance.
In Manjamma's own words:" Possibilities are infinite - for change, for growth, for making a difference in your life and that of others like you. My life in one word is a testimony of possibilities. Problems appear in life only to show us newer possibilities. And the power of possibilities is to be harnessed to steer change. "
Manjamma painstakingly tells us the life of Manjunath who recognized herself as Manjamma which makes you realize how a fight for acceptance became an agonizing journey whilst accomplishing the journey Jogathi Nritya and Kalavva song became her solace and purpose in life.
Manjamma was born into an upper caste, middle-class family, and been thrown out by her parents. Then it was an arduous journey to overcoming the pain, struggle, and becoming the person who is now awarded by the most important person in the country. Painful slumps, Manjamma has to be swallowed, Manjamma thrashed, betrayed, dark humiliated night transformed into gloomy days before the real dawn comes, Manjamma has to be gone through the field of fire.
The narrative emphasized negligence, and cruelty that we often do to other people when we think they are not like us and showered inhuman behavior to them. That gruesome torture that civilized people do to those who don't fit into our so-called normal looks and body culture. She gives us detailed account of how she came into touch of Jogathi Nritya and Kalavva song, her learning days narrative is inspirinig and heartfelt. It is moving and gives you goosbumps when you would know the depth of her dedication.
Manjamma not only makes recognition as transgender she also gives glory to folk dance Jogathi Nritya and Kalavva songs; she wore now prestigious emblems.
Now Manjamma Jogathi is an Indian theatre actress, singer, and dancer of Jogathi Nritya, a folk dance form of North Karnataka. In 2019, she became the first transgender woman to be the president of Karnataka Janapada Academy, the state's top institution for folk arts. In January 2021, Manjamma is awarded for her contribution to the field of folk arts, Government of India announced Padma Shri for her.
This life journey is narrated with lucidity, along with humble and candid language Manjamma tells us about the struggle of her life that emphasizes courage, honesty, and becoming a person of complete integrity.
Highly rrecommended this book to every person.

No. Did he feel happy with the things he did that boys do? No. What did that boy want? He wanted to put bindi, to help around with chores that were typical to girls those days, to walk and talk like girls did. And when this realization stuck, the woman inside that body of a man felt trapped and wanted to unleash. Thus began the story of Manju, discovering the Manjamma within.

It's been quite a while since I read a memoir. And reading one of a transgender has been the first. It was such an insightful read full of their struggle for recognition, the little joys of their lives, the Jogathi art they preserve and pass on to the others in the community. It was a very candid and heart-felt account. Manjamma poured her heart out while penning it down.
The dilemma they face while understanding their own feelings, battling with them until there's no ambiguity left. That's when the real struggles begin. To make family and friends understand and acknowledge is such a herculean and never-ending task. To top it all there's hardly any means to earn a livelihood. Thrown into the clutches of prostitution, life becomes a living hell.
The memoir is about her own life as well as about the many like her who struggled for recognition in life and some even after their death, like Manjamma's guru. It is due to people like Manjamma, who never gave up and made the Jogathi art recognised. They have come a long way and there's still a lot to be done for them. This book is not just a memoir but a much needed wake up call to accept everyone as they are and treat them with all due respect.

It's been quite a while since I read a memoir. And reading one of a transgender has been the first. It was such an insightful read full of their struggle for recognition, the little joys of their lives, the Jogathi art they preserve and pass on to the others in the community. It was a very candid and heart-felt account. Manjamma poured her heart out while penning it down.
The dilemma they face while understanding their own feelings, battling with them until there's no ambiguity left. That's when the real struggles begin. To make family and friends understand and acknowledge is such a herculean and never-ending task. To top it all there's hardly any means to earn a livelihood. Thrown into the clutches of prostitution, life becomes a living hell.
The memoir is about her own life as well as about the many like her who struggled for recognition in life and some even after their death, like Manjamma's guru. It is due to people like Manjamma, who never gave up and made the Jogathi art recognised. They have come a long way and there's still a lot to be done for them. This book is not just a memoir but a much needed wake up call to accept everyone as they are and treat them with all due respect.

I just finished reading From Manjunath to Manjamma. It's truly one of the most inspiring, heart-touching, and genuine stories I have ever come across.
Majamma is a Padma Shri Awardee and a transgender folk artist. Her struggles will move you to tears. By telling her story she continues to fight for the respect for the transgender community rightfully deserves. This book mirrors the cruelty of society and its ignorance.
Manjamma was ostracized, beaten up, raped, and mocked just because she chose to embrace her true calling. Can you believe that in today's "advanced" world, the struggle of transgender people continues even after their death - religious communities refuse to bury transgenders' bodies on "their" grounds? Did you know many transgenders are disowned by their families forcing them to beg on the streets? Today, there are no homes for elderly transgender people and their families refuse to tend to them in their final stages of life. What are they to do?

I picked this book up as I wanted to understand transgender perspectives and be an ally to a community which goes through immense struggles every day. I was completely hooked to this.
A simple, unassuming, humble record just like Manjamma of a complex, difficult and ultimately hugely successful and influential life. Loved the book as it tracks the entire life of Manjamma from a difficult, ostracized, and assault filled childhood to a community and arts driven rebirth. Filled with heart breaking bigotry and abandonment revealing the strong hearted person in Manjamma, this book was nothing less than inspirational
Manjamma is an inspiration to everyone. She has laid down an excellent foundation for the transgender Jogathis and completely changed the life for transgenders in and around Karnataka. What awaits this community in the future has now become less scary and more exciting.

This is a story of a transgender who went through a lot in life till the point where she received the Padma Sri - the nations 4th highest award. We do not come across such stories because nobody tells them. The author does so in a simple, sincere and grounded manner. You cant but empathise with the protagonist and all her travails. The other aspect of this book is that in an age of multi alphabet activism, there are traditions in the worlds most ancient civilization/Hindu religion that has provided for accommodating all shades. It is sad that these traditions are slowly dying out and in that context, glad that such stories are being told. More power to the author to write such powerful stories and more power to Manjamma to work on many such traditions.

With an intention to read books on varied topics and a memoir by itself, this book piqued my curiosity and it sure did justice to the writing considering it came from someone who clearly wanted to tell her story in a fluid manner because it is important to let the world know that the journey to reaching a stage where she was conferred with the Padma Shri award was not something that just happened, it was a life time of reaching there and the events that led to this.
The memoir depicts the pain that each transgender has to go through in their lives considering there is no clarity, acceptance and any norm laid down, plus when they themselves are so confused on their own identity and the every changing emotions take them into a whirlpool of raging emotions that leave them confused, ashamed and doubtful.
Manjunatha aka Manjamma lays down her story bare right from the age when she started developing the traits and her preferences and how they were shunned first by her parents and then by society at large. there were some who were protecting her as well because this life that they choose is anything but easy.
She goes on to describe how difficult it is for people like them to earn respectfully and how they are forced to resort to prostitution and sex trade due to the non availability of jobs and opportunities for them. the next time we judge any person, let us remember the struggles they have to face and let us have empathy towards each section of the society having being the privilaged ones.
In the end the transgenders are like any other human beings, irrespective of caste , religion and where the are born, they also have the same needs to be loved, respected and accepted for what they are and what they want to be.
A big salute to the Padma Shri award winner for achieving what she has and overcoming all the obstacle that possibly could have been in her path yet striving and demanding for an equal opportunity for themselves and continuing to support anybody who wants to come out and take shelter in Manjamma's Institute.
