This is the compelling story, set in 1870s San Francisco, of a pioneering woman physician who goes West to practice medicine and falls in love with a self-made millionaire accused of murdering his mentally disturbed wife.
A very entertaining read, with a healthy dose of humour, action and sexy times. The characters were also fun. Hallie was a female doctor, a very competent one I might add although there's some questions about her education on the subject of male parts. Jake was a beautiful man (a fact repeatedly mentioned), with a hateful wife because you can take a girl out of the South but the girl with her family will always take the South with them even in the middle of the Civil War and despise the husband who fight for the North. But Serena was a complex character. She wasn't just evil other woman, there's depth in her and before everything fell apart she's a nice person if a bit spoiled. The mysterious villain wasn't so mysterious after all. I guessed who it was the moment his point of view was shown by the author. Not much sleuthing in this book either, just some here and there investigations. It seemed the author didn't want this book to be too heavy on the mystery side, but to more bedroom scenes side, which is fine because they're hot. The side characters were also interesting. And despite all of the humour, there's a lot tragic scenes and tragic realities of life at the time especially for foreign women (Chinese in this book). I admit it made me a bit uncomfortable to laugh sometimes, but maybe it's the author intention to balance both sides. Does made the HEA worth it though.
