"She could resist this bad boy if he wasn t so darned good at it. "
A "Midnight Justice" Story
Darla Powers, a.k.a. DynaGirl, is the Jessica Rabbit of crime fighters, but that doesn t mean it s easy finding a date. When her latest ex opines she s not helpless enough to make him feel manly, she flies off to take out her romantic frustrations on a villain dumb enough to pick tonight to break into a secret government vault.
Lucien Wroth s father may be a famous supervillain, but Lucien doesn t see himself as a bad guy. Just one determined to free his baby sister from a supercriminal s clutches. He s this close to getting his hands on a vital set of schematics when one sultry superheroine catches him elbow-deep in a top-secret safe.
Darla is horrified when Lucien s pretty face and bulging muscles distract her enough to let him get away. No one escapes DynaGirl. But somewhere along the way to getting revenge for her public humiliation, she and Lucien become uneasy allies resisting an all-too-easy attraction. Suddenly she suspects the perfect man for a good girl just might be a very bad boy.
Warning: This book contains heroes, villains, mind-games, epic battles, bustiers, leather, and an infamous Women of the Cape "Maxim" photo spread.
Vivi Andrews writes paranormal romantic comedies and sexy shape-shifter romances. She lives in Alaska when she isn't indulging her travel addiction. For more about Vivi, please visit her website or blog.
Finally something different!! I love paranormal romance, but I was kind of getting tired of the usual fare of shifters and vampires. The superhero/supervillain world Ms. Andrews created was both believable and campy in a good way. If you love Marvel comics, you will love this book. The characterization was awesome: the h was likable, and the H was super sexy and masculine. I also loved the author's wit and humor.
Overall, a great read, and I can't wait to delve into the rest of the series!
I probably have to classify this as a guilty pleasure read but boy, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yup I'm a sucker for superheroes and hot supervilains (especially of the not-so-vilain-after-all category) and for romance as well, so if a story hit both those kinks of mine, I can't NOT enjoy it. A very nice novella that I will read again in the future, I'm sure. The few things I did not like : the cover, which is quite awful, the title... and the main character name. When French is your native tongue, Lucien is NOT a sexy name. Nevertheless, I liked the character too much to let his name bother me. Right on my way to the next one !
Superhero fiction is kind of a secret love of mine. There isn't that much out there, in original universes not tied up with DC or Marvel, and some of what is available is rather...mediocre, so I'm always cautiously excited when I see a new entry. Last year Carrie Vaughn surprised me with After the Golden Age and the year or two before that was AJ Menden's "Elite Hands of Justice" series of super-hero romances, but by in large it has been dry.
Enter Samhain's "Midnight Justice" stories. There's three, so far, by some of their recognizable names. Vivi Andrews was certainly a draw for me, as I really enjoy her Karmic Consultants books, but the other two books (Blade of Moonlight by Kimberly Dean and Breaking Bad by Jodi Redford) sound equally as interesting.
Superlovin' lived up to my expectations for an Andrews romance. The leads were engaging and had great banter; the romance didn't come easy and in the end both had to learn how to compromise their stubbornness. I was initially a little put off with how Andrews described what attracted Darla to Lucien--Darla was in lust because Lucien was as strong if not stronger than her and she really wanted a strong man in her bed--but I appreciated that later she expanded on it and gave solid reasoning for why I should care about them as a couple.
There's more to the story than just the romance, Andrews shows us what happens when grief and genius collide as well as the expectations brought on kids because of their parents' infamy. It was an interesting juxtaposition between Darla and Lucien; they're both pegged by the media and world at large as being a certain way because of who they're parents are. Whereas Darla forced herself into a life that wasn't quite what she wanted, Lucien strove to keep himself out of the life as much as possible. He didn't excuse his dad, or justify his crimes, just asked what else could a man do when he loses everything?
As I said, the initial beginnings of the attraction had me leery and edging away, but the story figured itself out, ending in a satisfying conclusion that has me itching to read the others.
When it comes to super heroes, I tend to group them together as cartoon type characters with little sex appeal. That was, until I read this book. While the content is tame, the story is fun and flirty which made for an easy page turner. The story takes place in a world where everyone knows that superheroes and villains exist. Darla Powers, is the heroine of the story. Her alter ego is DynaGirl, the Jessica Rabbit of superheroes with parents that are the paragons of teh Super Hero world. She has been on magazine covers flaunting her bustier, and a body that makes most envious. Her problem, she is so strong, that most men are too intimidated to date her.
Lucien, is the ultimate bad boy. Also known as Demon Spawn, he is stronger and faster than any super villain out there. On a mission to save his sister from the Super prison labelled Area Nine, Lucien will stop at nothing until he finds her. When he breaks in to a secured facility to find the blue prints of Area Nine, the battle between the good girl, and the bad boy ensues, and Dyna Girl realizes, she may have met her match. Out to prove that not all is as it seems, Lucien fights his way into the heart of his enemy and shows her, that not all bad boys are actually "bad". Teaming together for the greater good, and to save his sister, Demon Spawn and Dyna Girl fight to unmask a conspiracy. They work save the world from a weapon like no one has ever known, while realizing they may have found a worthy opponent (or lover) in the process.
This was a great read with a lot of crime fighting action and a sexy ending. The flirtations between the characters are fun and sassy, allowing for the story to flow nicely without making readers think of the stereotypical hero/heroine. Dyna Girl is strong and independent, and I enjoy reading how Lucien breaks down her walls to make her melt. If you like super heroes. or are just looking for something a little different than the typical romance, this one is for you.
Argghhhhhh I'm so upset I didn't love this story! This is the first short story I read from this Midnight Justice anthology but I think the concept is fresh and cool. I mean, we are talking about superheroes here! Very League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and all.
Darla aka DynaGirl happens to come across someone breaking into a records vault. He's a bad guy, so she has to apprehend him. Except he's very sexy and he kind of gets under her skin. When he gets away from her, she can't be outdone by a villain, and makes it her mission to find him and bring him to justice.
But Wroth had a good cause for what he was doing. Typical good guy acting the villain for a good cause. He just wanted to save his sister.
This sounds like fun right? And then add in the fact that the dialogue is funny and I should've been hooked. But I wasn't, not that much. I mean I liked it ok but it was missing a certain something that I can't really put my finger on. It was still an entertaining read if you like this type of setting, definitely something that I'd like to see more of as far as plots and storylines. I will check out the other two stories in this Midnight Justice anthology.
This book takes the whole good girl/bad boy thing to a whole other level. Darla is on the side of right to the point that she blindly believes all "villains" are evil and Lucien curls his lip at the so called "heroes" who painted him as a villain simply for being the son of one. It's a tangled web and the attraction they feel toward one another makes things even more volatile when they butt heads.
I think the thing I like most here is how the Wroth family isn't really BAD. They've been labeled as the bad guys because of their powers and, frankly, Lucien is entirely correct when he points out that so-called villains don't have the same rights as anyone else. That line between perception and reality is intriguing and it's something we see carried on in later books.
Right now, I'm on the good girl/bad boy train. This one hit the spot, man. It hit the spot.
This was my favorite story in the whole Midnight Justice antho, by far. I loved that Vivi really focused on developing the feelings and the connection between Lucien and Darla, instead of having them leap between the sheets and then want more than sex later.
It was a nice change of pace, and avoided a lot of romance cliches that drive me straight up the wall. A very, very good option for those who like their romance on the sweet side instead of steamy.
