Reborn as the Villainess?! I'll Rewrite the Plot!: An Isekai Adventure Romance

Rate this book
Lynn Smith is having a very bad day.

Getting hit by a truck on her way to a job she didn't even want was bad enough, but now she's woken up—not as Lynn Smith, retail worker, but as Camille Shadowrender, the villainess of a popular fantasy novel who is doomed to die at the end of the story!

Determined to change her fate and avoid a second terrible death, Lynn embraces her role as Camille, the last witch of the Darkwood, and sets out to right the wrongs of her character before it's too late. First on her free the grumpy dragon shifter who has been enslaved to her family for 200 years so that he won't have a reason to kill her in the climactic final scene. Unfortunately for her, Zynder isn't so ready to forgive and forget! Now Camille has to write her own redemption arc while being pursued by a vengeful dragon who can't seem to make up his mind if she's his enemy, a stolen object from his hoard, or... something else.

But Camille is soon going to discover that changing her own fate comes with consequences. Can she protect the things she holds dear while also saving her own life? Or is the only way to save the world to become the villain, after all?

This was such a fun and entertaining read with parts that were more serious at times and others focused on action, all supporting a slow build/burn romance. The book starts in our world with Lynn (h) who's a retail worker who's been unappreciated and is struggling. She's in an accident that kills her, but then she awakens in another place, being called another name (Camille), and eventually works out that she's now a witch in a world that's familiar to her from a book she'd read a year ago. Except in the book, her character was the bad guy that died in the final battle at the end. So the new Camille works on changing her story! Zynder (H) is a dragon shifter who's been a slave to Camille's family for many years and he's deeply perturbed at the witch's change in behavior. He's plotted for a long time to get his freedom and revenge. Even when Camille releases him, Zynder sticks around to keep an eye on her, but is even more confused because she's doing good things. The story follows them both as Camille finds her place unexpectedly in the new world, the two of them fall in love, and while the story shifts to throw complications at them. Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama and neither were virgins (there were hints the H had experience but no details given and the h was experienced in our world but the body she took over wasn't).

I really enjoyed this one and while it glossed over some areas that I wished had been expanded on more, there was still some nice world-building, character development, and a lot of details that fleshed out the characters. Both the H and h were very likable and I esp loved Zynder's grumpiness and demand for Camille to be selfish, even as I also loved how caring and altruistic she was. Even though Zynder starts off hating and threatening Camille, the reveal of her actually being someone from a different world isn't drawn out so there's lots of time with him being overprotective instead. He also calls her some adorable nicknames and is truly devoted to her. The steam doesn't start til after 50% but there are still multiple steamy scenes and the H has some extra fun features.

The full cast of the book includes many side characters that Camille helps (despite Zynder being reluctant for her to be involved) and the characters do get involved in saving the world. I liked that the side characters were a mix of creatures from orcs to dryads to elves to humans. Some are more friendly at first than others, but Camille won characters over in a fulfilling way to read about since she'd felt so unloved and ineffective in her past life. In this new world, she found purpose and value, although she only wanted to travel around and provide some witchy cures, not actually have to save everyone.

The climax does have some danger and higher emotions. How the world is saved and the main characters win was really cool in my opinion since this was meant to be a fun, adventure-type read. The H and h do get their HEA and the epilogue is an unnamed, many years into the future with them very happy and in love. Then there's a note after that epilogue that ties a bow on one last thread that I was curious about in a great way. I did wish for one last glimpse or update on two of the side characters, but I wasn't devastated that we didn't get it. I would recommend this, it flowed well, kept me engaged the whole time, and was just a perfectly timed read for me after something slower.

The set up: A retail worker is hit by a truck and is reborn as Camille Shadowrender, the villainess in the fantasy novel she read a year earlier. The villainess who is killed at the end by Zynder, the (very attractive) dragon shifter who has been enslaved to her family for centuries…

This was such a good time! It felt like the author had fun writing this book, which made for a really entertaining read. It was mostly light-hearted and plot-driven, and the fast pace had me engaged throughout the whole story. The storyline itself didn’t have any huge surprises but I really enjoyed the feel-good vibes from how Camille went about her ‘redemption arc’.

I’m always a sucker for stories where the FMC just wants to live a peaceful life, is kind to people (or orcs, goblins, and other monsters in this case), and villages fall in love with her — especially when she’s been overlooked in the past. Plus we got good grumpy caregiving, “be more selfish, Camille” from the dragon shifter MMC too.

It was a pretty predictable trope-y fantasy adventure plot, but I enjoyed the relationship development and the characters introduced. I can't say that I've read much isekai romance before and would love to see more stories in this genre.

3.5 stars: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I enjoy reading isekai manga, manhwa, manhua, web novels, and watching anime. It is very popular in the West now, but a decade or two ago it was far less common and was mostly associated with Japanese media. The West has its own version of the concept called portal fantasy, with classics like Alice in Wonderland, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Wizard of Oz, and The Neverending Story. For anyone unfamiliar, isekai refers to a story where the protagonist is reincarnated or transported from their original world into a different one, usually a fantasy setting. Now that the genre has gained more attention in recent years, I started wondering whether there were more stories like it available here in the West, and that search eventually led me to this book.

I’ve now put together a list of Western isekai-style books to read. So far, this one has been enjoyable to follow. Some areas could have been explored a bit more. For example, I was surprised she didn’t

I don’t usually care for enemies-to-lovers stories, but this one wasn’t bad. It didn’t drag on like others do, nor did it make me think, “ugh, no thanks,” when it came to the love interest. Often in this trope, the love interest is toxic and sets off a lot of red flags, which makes it hard for me to understand why the female lead falls for them at all. Here, though, the relationship develops at a nice pace and Zynder is actually decent. Overall, it was a pleasant read, and I'm glad I came across it.

THATS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT BABEY

the sample captivated me so much that I had to read the whole thing. This was wonderful!!! Perfect semi slow burn, incredibly entertaining, and SO satisfying to see the ways "original" plot was subverted - especially wrt dragon dude!!!

this is literally what I mean when I say I want Hot With Plot. This would have been a page turner even without pulsing shafts or burning desire (it totally helped tho).

I think the only thing I WASNT satisfied with - and it's not a big deal - is that Allyndra didn't end up with Grux 😞. maybe I just disliked her original love interest that much, or maybe I felt the chemistry in the 5 total lines they had together. Rip Gruxlyndra.

Great story, graphic sex warning!

I enjoyed the book and the characters, but I had to skip some scenes. Lol! There is a warning on first page or so, but not on the cover lime Wiedergeburt, so if that is an issue for you, be warned. The story is really good though. If you love Isekai (and Truck-kun) you will very likely really enjoy this one, tropes, predictability, and all.

While the story is not unusual, the characters are. The author did a great job creating characters who were fun, relatable and adorably confused (except for the new villain - ew!). I particularly like how the author untangled the various fates so that three HEAs happened, not one. I would not mind reading a sequel, just to see how the children turn out!

Full of potential

This story is full of potential, but it needs more development. Particularly around the relationships. Some parts just seemed far too abrupt and implausible.
