Win the trials, lose those I love—or fail and save them all. I barely survived my first trials. Now the stakes have been raised. The queen has imprisoned my only family to control me after I defied her. I’d hoped my father the king would become an ally, but he won’t dare betray the queen. Luckily, it turns out I’m not the only one who wants to see her fall. I’m fighting on all fronts, trying to stay alive through the trials while also joining the rebellion's fight. As further complication, the pull I feel toward Rush is becoming harder to resist. The bond between us seems to be growing, but his allegiance to the queen persists. I’m not the only one she has leverage over. Each trial grows more dangerous while the queen only appears more and more untouchable. She thinks she’s on top and has already won. She forgot those on top have the farthest to fall. I’m determined to reveal to the mirror world who—and what—she really is. I will be her downfall.

i have a bone to pick with lucia ashta.

this book is just... SO bland. there's no other way to describe this book and the apparently 'passionate' relationship between rush and elowyn. if they were a taste, it would be plain oatmeal and porridge without salt or pepper. this tastes like absolutely nothing at all, and that's what it gave.

my biggest gripe with this book is the mortifying thought process behind some of these characters. they are somehow insanely inconsistent and illogical all of the time and as a reader, you just CAN'T connect to them because it's about 220 percent too unrealistic or even logical for you to even comprehend. elowyn is a badass, but somehow turns into a desperately horny virgin every time this man she's met maybe two weeks ago comes into view. rush has no other personality trait other than being thirsty for elowyn and being super fucking handsome (which results in him being literally harassed at every formal event, by the way!) he is so bland that even a unwanted plastic billboard dumped on the side of an nyc alley would be more engaging.

i have SO many things to say about this book and unfortunately none of them are positive. the sheer ungodly amount of crotch grabbing (yes CROTCH GRABBING???), whether it be to make a point about how big one's dick apparently is, or just to be a jackass and harass women, is nauseating. the constant referring to dicks as 'swords' and ‘wands’ is MORTIFYING. the extremely juvenile prose (god the amount of times i full body cringed), the badly plotted... well, plot, the oddly modern, slangy dialogue despite the medieval setting, and the poorly written and characterized characters are just unbearable.

and then, get this: after 1 and a half books of rush and elowyn being thirsty for each other, the smut when they finally get together isn't even good. it's just boring.

this is elowyn's whole thought process throughout the book: she needs to run away!!! but oh no she doesn't want to leave rush because this is apparently the man she loves and can't live without :( she has known this man for two weeks, by the way. and then she DOESN'T run away, what a shocker!!! she loves rush but she can't trust him, but then he saves her from some danger (because she's written as a badass but never seems to save herself) and boom she trusts him again. repeat this thought process around ten times and this is the whole plot.

i could have chosen SO many bad examples of quotes to put in this review, but i figured i've already lambasted this book enough by now. and i can't believe i'm saying this, but edward and bella trump this couple BY FAR when it comes to romantic chemistry. at least i felt SOMETHING when i was reading twilight other than god-please-get-me-out-of-here. that's how oatmeal-porridge tasting this book is.

primrose, my lovely house elf like creature, you are the sole saving grace of this dumpster fire of a fantasy novel. i'll give this two stars just for you.

Cue that TikTok song “Oh no. Oh no. Oh no no no no.”

I overlooked the issues of the first book somehow and couldn’t stop turning the pages. Maybe that’s my obsessive compulsion to always know what happens in a story, idk, but I ignored the annoying, impulsive FMC and the poorly executed Mad Queen/White Rabbit vibes. I actually enjoyed the premise, and wanted to get to the reveals.

But then this book. Oh lawdy, this book. This could have been 150 pages, max, because it was the exact same scenarios just repeated 4000x. She needs to escape! Oh damn, she can’t escape. She wants to have sex with Rush! Oh damn, she can’t trust him. She’s dying in the trials! Oh she’s saved. The Queen is going to kill her! Oh the Queen decides not to. Rinse and repeat for the whole book.

Wait let’s pause on the “queen is going to kill her”. The last 30% of the book is the longest, most drawn out & overly dramatic 60 minutes of actual plot I think I’ve ever read. This Queen is such a joke. For someone who is sO tErRiFyInG all she did was essentially say “I’ll give you one more chance.”

And I would be remiss if I didn’t warn that this is FTB!!! I CANNOT. There’s some build up and downright cringe advances by our FMC, and one awkward AF “first time” moment, but then just when you think the 🌶️ is about to kick in…THE CHAPTER ENDS. askdjgjglslajfjlslalfjg I quit.

I really really liked book 1 in the #RoyalsOfEmbermere series. The setting, characters and overall story caught my attention immediately. I must admit though that book 2 was a little less exciting when it came to the development of the story. I kinda felt like the story dragged a little and that there was no real progress in the plot. Some chapters felt like we would make one step forward, only to take 3 steps back again - especially in the second half of the book. :(
This was mainly due to Elowyn and the queen though. Where I loved Elowyn's fierceness and take no BS behaviour in book 1 , I found it to be too much at times in #FaeChampion, simply because it felt like Elowyn was all talk and no game. Unfortunately, the same goes for the queen. The evil incarnate would more often than not make threats that were completely empty, because she would go back on her word and pardon someone only to threaten them again 2 pages later for the very same thing. Especially the last few chapters were that way and felt a little dragged out.

All in all, Elowyn was probably my least favourite character in book 2, which is a shame, because I really loved her in book 1. I hope that things will turn around again in book 3, because I am still very much interested in how the story will progress, especially considering the revelations at the very end and the cliffhanger we were left with!

This got really bad. Really fast. Early spoilers ahead:

This book picks up immediately where the first left off and just got silly. Perhaps the first book was as silly too “off with your head!” But that was easy to ignore because of the plot for the most part and the romance. This time it really hit me in the face early on when we get to witness the interaction of the “stagers”. Then Elowyn decides to stand up to the Queen without any thought (the entire scene was ridiculous) and proceeds to walk away only to decide to return. It was just….eh. I couldn’t get into it. And didn’t.

3.5/5 It started off a bit awkwardly but by the end I was hooked. I enjoy the writing style of these books - it’s easy to get caught up in and forget about everything else. Main point of critique is that the characters are somewhat undeveloped

Now I wanna cry

I don't wanna wait for the next book. I want to see a certain character brutally murdered already. This one I wanted to smack a few of the characters. I felt it drug a bit. But I still enjoyed it and couldn't put it down.

The first book wasn't stellar - the dialogue wasn't great, the FMC didn't make the best decisions and the worldbuilding / setup felt a little thin. But it was an interesting premise, followed a solid 'main character has to go through some trials for the crown' story arc and seemed to promise all the fantasy romance faerie tropes that I enjoy. The cliffhanger ending got me excited for the next one and so decided to pick up the sequel. But within the first few chapters I was struck by the poor writing, and how the plot seemed to yank you back and forth by the neck (the FMC wants to escape, no wait she'll go back..etc). It just felt forced. I'll give the author a try again one day, but I can't continue this series. DNF.

I wish I could give this book 6 stars (and a shooter)... Ever since the ending of Fae Heir, I have been waiting to get my hands on the next installment of El's story.

It. Did. Not. Disappoint!

Part Hunger Games, Part Alice in Wonderland... All Awesome! I am a sucker for a fish out of water story, pair it with a take-no-prisoners heroine who makes her own rules and you have a book that I will gladly get up at 3am to finish- and, yes, I truly did.

Again, I loved how El made her own rules and made new alliances while honoring the old. Pru the goblin, is still my favorite character-- what I can say, Ms. Ashta writes AMAZING sidekicks!-- And I loved how Pru was always three steps ahead of the action. I will say that any perceived slight from El, no matter how good intentioned it was, was incredibly frustrating. You can see that in this book, El realizes how incredibly far out of her league she truly is and she is starting to crack under the pressure of trying to keep everyone around her safe and sane.

I can't wait to see what Ms. Ashta has in store for the Embermere Gang.

And, wow, this story had more twists and turns than a bucking dragon! I am still recovering from that ending and am thankful that I received an advanced reader copy, because it took me a minute to recover... I am leaving this review voluntarily so the author-overlord might take pity on my heart when the next installment draws near.

Fae Champion by Lucia Ashta is book two in the Royals of Embermere Series and is just as exciting and action packed as the first. Everything about this book is magical - it has fae, dragons, an evil queen, and romance.

Elowyn and Rush’s story is definitively one that keeps you hooked from page one making this entire series a super fun binge read that you don’t want to put down. There is a lot going on in this book but the author writes it perfectly so it is not overwhelming and you can easily keep pace with the story without missing a beat.

I was happy to dive deeper into the story of this series and discover much more about the realm and characters. I also loved meeting a few new characters who are sure to be favorites by book three. The ending was an absolute surprise and definitively makes you want to pick up book three immediately to find out what could possibly happen next.

Fae Champion is an action packed adventure filled with magic and I really enjoyed the entire book. The only complaint I have - and it’s a small one is that at times the language the characters used was a bit too modern for the story setting and it threw me off a handful of times while reading but other than that the book was great and I enjoyed every page.

I definitively recommend this entire series for anyone wanting a romantasy filled with fae, magic, and romance that you can easily read in one sitting.

I am so excited to be back in Embermere! Fae Heir ended on a cliffhanger that had me anxiously awaiting the release of Fae Champion. This book picks up where the first book ended; a heart-pounding opening to the second instalment of the series.
The scene is set where the deadly trial continues, but Elowyn's fight is far from over.

Fae Champion focuses more on Rush and the importance of him winning the trial. The queen is still at it trying to undermine Elowyn at every corner, but Elowyn isn't a quitter, even when the queen has her locked away in a cell. With tropes such as arranged marriage and enemies to lovers, the reader can expect suspense and royal fae court politics.

Ending on a major cliffhanger, I am quite excited for the third book. I have become invested in these characters and need to know what happens next. Also, how stunning is this cover! I can admire it for hours! I recommend this series to fans of Fantasy Romance who love forced proximity and dragons.

Many thanks to MTMC Tours and the author for gifting me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

1 Star - DNF @ 23%

The first one was rough (seriously, it was so bad), but I found myself inexplicably committed to knowing what happens. Who is Elowyn's mom? Is it actually the queen because they look so much alike?? Why is her father unbearably stupid? Do either Rush of Elowyn develop a personality at some point? I need to know (p.s., someone please tell me). But, that need to know lost out compared to how absolutely boring this story is. Elowyn continues to be a horny teenager (that's as much of a personality she was awarded by the author), Rush is as bland as water, and the queen is almost cartoonish and entirely overpowered. When Elowyn starts talking about how she LOVES Rush (after knowing him for like 2 weeks, maybe) - I realized I could not handle the rest of the story. There's a continuous loop of Elowyn being obsessed with Rush to then saying she needs to stay away from him because he's evil/a spy/working with the queen. That's the entire plot up until I gave up. Oh, and there's a lot of crotch grabbing for some reason? Yuck.

As with the first book, the whole thing comes off incredibly juvenile and I cannot find it in me to care one ounce for the characters or the (almost nonexistent) plot.

I could not wait to read what happens to Elowyn next. I could not put this book down.

So many things in this world are not as it seems. The magic awakening in our heroine is fascinating.. The fact she can see things at court no one else can. So many twists in this second book. Seeing how the trials and the magic around them are coming to light. The magic of the land is so much more than it seems. Lucia shares glimpses of the magic within this read; I love how the characters show their true selves, but there are still mysteries surrounding so much of what is going to happen next. I love each character, and how our heroine is trying to save them all. I love the passion between them.
Such a cliffhanger. Not giving anything away, but I actually gasped and cried out near the end.

This Series is such an Awesome read! If you want a series that includes fascinating characters like dragons, shifters, and magic, this is for you. The characters are so well written; I was sucked in from the start with this tale of a heroine who is not what she seems. She fights for those she loves, and speaks her mind. I cannot wait to find out what her final destiny will be.

I had to recover from this book. I had so many emotions. I believe this is one of the best stories Lucia has written. That is saying a lot because I LOVE all of them. This story however sucked me into it and didn't let me go until the end.

This story starts right where the other stops. I was so surprised with what happened to El. I can't believe in the first few chapters she was in the fight and the things that happened. OMG! BAD BOOTY FIGHTING!! The Queen is still a word and gets worse as the story goes on. Now I just look at her as a spoiled brat. If you have not seen the picture of Rush going around then go find it. Wow, hot boyfriend lucky El. Him and his friends are a whole nother story. You are or are not going to love. I honestly hope we see the hot side dudes pics also. LOL They can fight beside me any day.

And, why do you get a long winded basic review? Because you going to have to read this book. It will change you. Don't ask just read.

Wow, this book was incredible!

Fae Champion by Lucia Ashta is book 2 in the Royals of Embermere Series.

I loved the ongoing story of Elowyn, Rush, their friends and the despicable and evil Queen in this book.

In this instalment the slow burn gets a lot steamier, the Queen is even more wicked and we finally find out who Elowyn’s Mother was. Along the way the friendships and relationships develop and Elowyn gains some magical abilities.

I couldn’t put this book down and loved the writing style and the unexpected twists in the story.

I love that Elowyn is strong, stubborn, caring and speaks her mind regardless of the consequences. I feel for Rush who is torn between his feelings for Elowyn and the duty/blackmail that the Queen holds over him.

That ending!!!!!

Thank goodness there’s a sneak peek of book 3 included. But I still need to get book 3 asap to see what happens next! I’m counting down until it’s released.

Since when does a mate bond allow you to hurt them?

I understand that we are talking about a corrupt queen. However, ninety percent or more do not let the mate hurt them. This really bothers me. Don't get me wrong I love a good dark fae book. I just can't wrap my mind around something so magical & special allowing you to injure the one you are destined to be with. The queen tries everything to kill Elyowen in the trials & outside of them. Sorry I should have started that after finally being together Rush & Elyowen find out they are mates. It's just hard after you read the ending of a book & have a strong reaction to it. The queen thinks she can control the trials but soon learns that is not true. The unisus almost dies after calling a match the way the queen wants it to end. The ending is filled with love & betrayal. Thankfully there are 2 chapters of the next book too.

This…was not good…after quickly finishing the first book of the series, I was truly excited to see what was next for Elowyn and Rush but oh my days this was not good.

My review of the first book mentioned incredibly cringe dialogue and how I could overlook it but it was impossible to do so in this one.

All the scenes felt dragged out, especially the last scene. The story was very dull, and the characters’ were so confusing to understand their personalities. The queen was a joke, and poorly written.
Don’t even get me started on the king with no backbone coming in and doing absolutely nothing. The FMC was probably the most annoying character of all and Rush the character with the least personality ever.

There’s no reason this was as long as it was. The last scene (maybe the last 30%) was SO cringe, confusing and DRAGGED OUT. All these characters making guest appearances in a singular scene made no sense. I don’t think I care enough anymore to read the next instalment.

Fae Champion is the second book in The Royals of Embermere series and must be read after Fae Heir.

The Fae Heir Trials continue along with Elowyn’s journey to discover who she is. The book is filled with memorable scenes- some humorous, some action packed, and others suspenseful.

My favorite scene in this book involves a bathtub. This scene is the most cringe worthy I’ve ever read in any book- and somehow it’s realistic and relatable because certain things are rarely perfect the first time. I was laughing and groaning at the same time.

I love Ashta’s writing style. She knows how to paint a scene so vividly that it feels like a movie in my mind. The author’s sense of humor is also on point. If you love witty dialogue and a character driven plot, Ashta is the perfect author for you.

I highly recommend this book and the entire series. I’m looking forward to reading book 3 when it releases in January 2024.

Fantastic epilogue spoken with passion
Impeccable voice acting again that lifts the story to another level. Creating the feeling of place and fantasy to escape to- again i felt the FMC was a lil all talk no action (" im skilled warrior" -" im just dangerous as you "- but never seems to anticipates so many knife attacks on herself - it was driving me nutz- book needs continuity & credibility charactermanagement 4 the fmc by her beta reader or dev editor) it was almost like FMC not written with much empathy for the reader/ listener to cheer for- the queen was starting to become more likeable.

again the narrators made this very enjoyable.

should u listen to it - YES both narrators are just so good. This jaded reader almost shed a glisten of tear at that epilogue voice acting- spoken with passion of shakespearian actor- u almost got me.

4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I was SO very happy with the way this second installment picked up the pace in the Royals of Embermere series! This storyline was action-packed, and, to my delight, I found that there was a significant amount of character development that took place within these 350 pages. It felt like I was able to better connect with the characters, especially Rush, and Elowyn grew, both internally, as a fae royal 👑

To say that the ending was unexpected is a MASSIVE understatement. My heart was so confused, but being the hopeless romantic woman that I am, I have to believe that Rush stabbed Elowyn to save her...especially after reading the epilogue. With that said, I just know that it is going to be quite the journey, for both Elowyn and Rush, in their (hopeful) reunion.

I am MORE than ready to see what The Wilds have in store for El and the gang and cannot wait to see how this story progresses with its many twists and turns...😬

Fun story continues

I do love the storyline in this series. There are a couple of twists in this one I didn’t see coming. The characters are enjoyable and I love hating the Queen and the others who stand by her. Sometimes there is just too much description or too much building to a point (feels like the writer was trying to get her word quota) that I just skip through to where something starts happening.

Pru is getting stronger in her resolve in this one and I love it. Sadly, we don’t see enough of her.

I am looking forward to book 3 as I want to see how this ends. I know how it will end (at least I think I do), I just don’t know in what manner, and that, I’m looking forward to. I’m really hoping a lot of my favorite side characters get to fight along side our MCs to get their world back. I’d love to see that.

four stars but leaning towards five

This was a good book. Learned to love a lot of the background characters. Especially the Unisus.
The only reason I dropped a star was because I felt the final scenes with Elowyn and the big bad were so silly and drawn out.
It was a little far fetched and outright annoying how much ‘screen time’ the Big Bad got. I honestly don’t think that fit with the impatience and dramatic decision making shown so far.
I swear the last 50 pages were one scene.
It didn’t fit either the previous flow of the book and at one point I was pulled out of the story to wonder how much longer this would drag on.
Absolutely cannot wait for all the baddies to get a big comeuppance!

I personally liked the first book more. The lack of knowledge Elowyn possesses, the fact that no one educated her on anything ever, including the idea of mates and bonding (not to mention they technically bonded without her consent due to her lack of knowledge) and the lack of Xeno and Saffron was honestly disappointing. She didn't even think once about seriously saving them or trying to find them besides asking Pru once a book. I loved both of the books but they really lacked quite a lot in terms of Elowyn's character. I hope in the third book we'll get to see her finally learn things and act accordingly instead of just yelling nonsense at the queen.

Okay now we're cooking!

The spunky FMC can only get you so far and I was starting to get annoyed because this woman would not learn. But then she started to think, hold her tongue, try to figure things out and I saw growth. I don't know if her heritage was supposed to be a twist but you can see it coming from a mile away although it's nice to have it confirmed. I don't get the king - to he swings between his apathy and care don't make sense. Now the end, whew, I should have seen it come but didn't see it coming and now I need more. I'm bothered the FMC doesn't know more about her would but she really has been trying so her ignorance makes sense.

Lucia Ashta is driving me CRA CRAZY... TALK ABOUT the edge of your seat. Freaking cliff hangers!!!

This series is intense with betrayal every time you turn a page (maybe not that bad). You have evil, I am like kill her and her minions already...Don't get me talking about the main male character... I could just pinch his head off then glue it back on cause he loves his female..

I love ALL the sidekicks (on the good side) in this story..

This review is short because I have to start the next book (which I hope it is out).

Final word from me you need to read this series or at least read the 1st book and get hooked like I have..

I’m still kinda shocked. I’m devastated. I’m… I dunno. But seriously, this writer has done a phenomenal job. I love to love the good guys and hate to hate the bad guys. I’m glued to the pages and can’t finish them fast enough. I’m fully invested. So many surprises and secrets and there’s some seriously dark natures. And some of the bad guys I thought were bad guys are actually good guys. Shocker! But the ending. Damn I didn’t see that coming. Seriously. I’m wrecked. My whole heart… and it’s not over. My girl has a lot to overcome. And yet she has made a new family and some good friends. This is a wild but spectacular journey!

meh…book is overly dramatic and sophomoric

The one thing I liked about this book was the main character Rush. The majority of the book is redundant. Same thing said over and over just in a different way. The other characters are annoying and blithering. It reads like a really bad soap opera. Also, the leads reader to believe there is going to be a really great steamy love scene between the two main characters but then just cuts it short. You know it happened but the author decided to leave out the details. In fact that is the whole reason I read the second book to see what happens between the two of them and I was sorely disappointed.

I voluntarily review an ARC.
This is the second book of the Royals if Embermere series, the books should be read in order.
I absolutely love the magic story and different creatures, Rush and the mating bond. But I struggle a bit with loving Elowyn. She should be smart enough not to endanger her own and her friends safety by being too stubborn and blunt every step of her way. She just stomps her foot like a petulant child.
I just hope she grows out of her immaturity in the next book. After a major cliffhanger I can't wait to read more about the powers of Embermere.

4.5 stars! A Great read! I love books that have magical elements to it and i can’t wait to discover what is going on in this world. I always love the way this author, who is a favorite can describe the world and give really cool sidekicks to the main character. I will say this book has lots of twists and it does have a cliffhanger, but it’s really not long before she puts the book out so it just makes me want the next one faster. Loved Elowyn and can’t wait to see what happens next, I will not give away the plot. Must read!
