Love Israel, Support Palestine takes the reader on a journey to the past, present and future of the State of Israel, the occupied Territories and the people living within it and beyond it. It is a journey revealing a different point of view that challenges the primary Israeli narrative, leaving behind many questions and proclamations regarding Israeli society. Nir is a different kind of Israeli, one who cannot be ignored. In his book, he confronts the reader with his Israeli his Jewish heritage as the grandchild of Holocaust survivors, his military identity as an officer who takes up arms and defends his country, and his humane identity as a citizen fighting for human rights and the rights of his Palestinians neighbors. This is an Israeli story through the eyes of a person who came to be one of the people most identified with the struggle against the occupation in Israel. The experiences of his military service in the Territories, his political activism and even his Big Brother appearance constitute a different, complex and fascinating image of Israelism. There was a public outcry after the Israeli publication wanted to scrap this book, right before it was about to be published in Israel, claiming that a book about the occupation would hurt the Israeli public’s feelings. The book was published in Hebrew thanks to crowdfunding that has enabled its publication.
like 3.65 stars.. some good points made of course but i feel like they weren’t communicated in the best way, i feel like he left out a lot of things but i think it’s good to hear an israelis perspective on this who doesn’t agree with the occupation and all of what the idf is doing, from someone who was in the idf himself. just felt like it could be said better and more straightforward
Now, I want to be clear: whatever your political leaning, this book, simply put, is poorly written. Lost in translation? I can't know for sure. And while it is easy to read, it's just not that good.
If you are looking for a book to seek understanding, to relate to and feel supported, or the opposite and you just want to see what/why/how an opposing view is being communicated, there MUST be better books to turn to than this one. In fact, anyone reading this review who might know of such a book, I would love your suggestions, please comment below!
So, in all sincerity, thanks to Mr. Cohen for his courage, his passion, and for writing a book at all. Seriously, I mean it. It reads like a diary he should be proud of, things that need to be said. Chapter 11 was my favorite. That said, I believe if his writing had then been put in the hands of a better writer, "Love Israel Support Palestine" could have been created into a marvelous document, whether you agree with the sentiment or not.
I agree completely with his viewpoint and applaud him for taking it to a wider audience. the writing was a bit meandering at times, and I could have done without the reality show segment, but a necessary book (especially after the events of October 2023).
The book should be commended because it's in a genre all of its own: a serving IDF officer willing to admit to crimes and human rights violations during his time of service and the absolute brainwashing that happens at every level of Israeli society. It is the inability to self-criticize that so blinds Israelis, but Nir Cohen is not one of those willfully blind.
