I'd forgotten I had this on my shelf. I think that says something.

Not that the story is bad. There's a reason I gave it four stars.

When I started writing several years ago (as if I'm some expert) I heard that the moment your characters start talking about how the story isn't moving, that means the story isn't moving. The advice? Cut out their observations and make the story move.

Now, in a series like Dengeki, you can start off a volume with Teru and her friends summarizing everything that isn't shown and having her friends lose it when they find out she hasn't even so much as kissed Kurosaki and it'll be called "breaking the fourth wall". The problem is, they're right. The story is slowing down.

But first, the good stuff.

Teru is still hilarious in this volume. She's still intelligent, even in her more insecure moments, and she's still pretty funny, especially when she tries to seduce Kurosaki after a makeover by her friends.

Kurosaki himself is slowly changing from a guy who would act like a jerk to make sure there was distance between him and Teru, to a guy who can occasionally lean in close and sniff the perfume she's wearing without saying something that will completely ruin the moment.

The growing relationship between Kiyoshi and Rena could have been really improbable, but because those two met through Teru and hang out near each other because of Teru, it actually works very well when they start talking by themselves. Rena, for all her arrogance, has a good heart, and Kiyoshi, for all his hatred of the elite, is smart enough to see beyond the surface with her. Combined with the way Motomi Kyousuke has aged Kiyoshi as time goes by, making him a teeny bit more bishie, I'm looking forward to this sub-plot more each time I see it.

My favorite part of this volume, though, was how Teru dealt with weakness. Much as we of the female persuasion would like to believe we are strong enough to handle anything, it's not true. When Teru is knocked off-balance by events, it's nice to see it play on her insecurities for a while.

Yes, this could be viewed as encouraging the "damsel in distress" but if the first girl admitted to The Citadel (a previously all-male, elite military school) had to have the physical requirements changed because there was no way she could reach them, I think that says something about women in general compared to the strength of men. Not that we shouldn't try to be strong, just that we shouldn't let ourselves get carried away into thinking that a few self-defense courses are all we'll need in life to be safe, or that we'll always think clearly when we're taken by surprise. That's arrogance.

That said, this incident I'm dancing around does provide an opportunity to show more than Teru's ability to freak out and recover. It also shows how far Kurosaki has come in his acceptance of himself and his relationship to Teru.

Now, for the weak points.

The first chapter feels like filler. It's cute, light, fluffy, and fun, but even though it touches on a previous character/situation like the one with the dog in a previous volume, it hasn't served a purpose yet except for a cute moment between the main couple. Plus, it's frustrating because, other than the amusement park (and we all know how that ended), Teru and Kurosaki haven't actually gone out on a date. One that ends well, I mean.

It's a brief diversion, but thankfully the volume gets back to the main plot pretty quick. Akira returns, and mysteries swirl around Rena's fiance, while Jack Frost the Virus is still very much around.

About the romance, we're now at volume 10, and there's been next to no physical development. Personally, I don't mind. I like how Motomi is increasing the emotional side of their relationship first. She handles drama really, really well. Seriously, there are very few shojo mangas I've read that handle pain as well as Dengeki Daisy. It's never heavy-handed, never in your face, it's just beautiful. Always.

So, I'll keep going with this series, even though it's starting to feel a tiny bit lost. It's still one of the best out there.

I wonder if Ms. Motomi's contract requires her to make a manga series with a specific number of volumes. Probably not, but it feels like the series is stagnating. After so many volumes, where the plot took important leaps forward, the last volume or two feels like the same thing again and again.

Here Teru is worried about school. Kurosaki and the group are worried about Teru and *still* worried about the security of her phone. Akira is *still* after Teru. Teru is still trying to feel confident that Kurosaki likes her.

These plot elements are pleasant enough. I still laugh of Teru's antics. Somehow the "go bald" joke doesn't ever get old (well, it does a little). She's clueless about boys. She felt a little weak in this book - a little "needs to be rescued", but overall I'm pleased to see that she still holds her own against Kurosaki. It isn't in her nature to be a lovesick teenager and Kurosaki doesn't want her to be.

My favorite part of Dengeki Daisy remains the passionate scenes between Teru and Kurosaki. Ms. Motomi is somehow able to create feelings of endless passion with simple drawings of the character looking at each other or embracing.

I'm getting a little frustrated with Dengeki Daisy, but it is a simple read. I'll definitely keep going back.

FINALLY; IT'S OVER
I've been reading this volume for OVER A YEAR. The story is slow, convoluted and predictable. Reading it is pure torture.

(If you see me picking up the next volume, please put me in time out)

In Summary

Volume 10 serves up a couple of fluffy chapters where Teru’s main concern is high school finals and perfume before reverting back to cyber-related intrigue. While Akira’s psycho bad attitude is getting old, Motomi-sensei livens things in the intrigue department with Rena’s mysterious fiancé. Between him and the budding relationship between Rena and Kiyoshi, Dengeki Daisy looks as if it could go on for at least a couple more volumes.

The Review

Fans who prefer lighter high school fare will enjoy the first part of Volume 10. Chapter 45 is reminiscent of the early Daisy-looking-out-for-Teru-the-bullied-scholarship-student chapters. Chapter 46 entails a bunch of shojo silliness as Teru’s female friends try to guide her in getting her relationship with Kurosaki to progress. But although neither of these arcs involves Akira, the threat he poses constantly lurks in the back of our heroes’ minds, and not surprisingly, the focus returns to him in the second half of the book.

I mentioned in my review of Volume 9 that with so many issues settled, Motomi-sensei would have to shake things up to keep this title interesting, and she does that with a shift in Kurosaki’s attitude towards Akira. Just before Akira reenters the story, Kurosaki comes to term with everything Soichiro did for him. In one sense, he’s able to put to rest the guilt he’s been carrying, but in another sense, he comes to see Akira with new eyes. Whereas Akira was simply the enemy before, Kurosaki now wants to save him, but given the elevator stunt Akira pulls in Chapter 48, redeeming Akira will be a significantly long project. By the way, Motomi-sensei admits in an author’s note that Kurosaki’s rescue of Teru is improbable even to her but offers the justification that her editor gave.

Another thing Motomi-sensei does to increase tension is introduce a new element of romantic angst. In the spirit of unlikely shojo romances, she throws together Teru’s two friends that fit that bill the best: Rena and Kiyoshi. The attraction forming between the pair feels forced, and to be honest, I’m less interested in how things will play out between them and more interested in the third person involved in their romantic equation, Rena’s fiancé. He injects a new bit of mystery into the story with his connection to Akira, and I look forward to seeing how he might manipulate Rena to achieve his goals.

I love this series - it's so much fun. My only complaint is that sometimes the supporting cast can get a little bit talky about the same things over and over. My other complaint (I guess I have two, ha) is please, please, Motomi-sensei, stop with the teasers! It's killing me. That, and the next volume doesn't come out until January!!! Gosh. Okay, just had to get that out of my system. Seriously, though, this is a really fun read. Go read it! Now!!

This book belonged to the best shoujo manga ever! Actually, there are lots of factors that bring out it's awesome-ness, (1)With its strong heroine, (2)conflicted hero, and (3)story -- OF COURSE that does both humor and emotion well, it is still most definitely a series worth reading.

An intense book.

I'm really glad that Daisy is always they to help and that Teru is like me in some ways. Bad things are around all the time and sometimes we are more confident in of abilities than we probably should. That can get us in trouble. And although she tried to prepare, badness still came and she didn't fair so we'll. In her situation, I don't know if I would have either. But she tries. She does her best and had people to help her.

I really like this series. They are very human in these crazy situations.

I just want to know what’s going on! Lol. I do enjoy these volumes so much but i do feel like the story is dragging out more than it needs to. I just want to get to the action and the unfolding of what all this drama is about. How important everyone is and their connections to the ministry is so wild and random…and the attempt of mystery and leading us the wrong way…I get it…but at the same time, let’s get on with the party.

The start of this volume felt a bit like filler, but we do get some explosive scene towards the end involving a knife brawl. It was also great witnessing more of Teru’s growth. I’m now curious as to the identity of this young villainous character. 3.5/5.

Vlastně ten celkový závěr a Akirou a ostatními postavami.

Synopsis:

A powerful organization that was after Kurosaki’s “Jack Frost” virus suddenly falls apart, but Kurosaki can’t rest easy since Akira was somehow involved. Furthermore, Akira tells Kurosaki that Teru is still a target! Can Kurosaki protect Teru from Akira’s menacing schemes?

My Thoughts:

When this volume starts off, things are somewhat peaceful. It's exam time and we get to see some of Tasuku's inner thoughts regarding how he thinks of Teru. It was a cute chapter. The chapter where they all go to visit Soichirou's grave was sweet. Tasuku finally let out some of his emotions over everything that's happened to him and losing Soichirou. He always seems to be wanting to save Akira the way that Soichirou saved him.

Speaking of Akira, either he's a spoiled brat or he just has no social skills. It might be a bit of both. He seems important to Chiharu and whoever she's working for, though. At least, important in the way that he's useful to them somehow. I don't like that kid, but if Tasuku can help him, that wouldn't be a bad thing because that kid needs serious help. Akira shows up and terrorizes Teru in an elevator when she happens to show up in the same place that he's in for a meeting with Rena and Rena's fiance. Tasuku saves her, but it really shakes her up and she gets angry with herself that he got hurt again while protecting her. She's pretty determined to get stronger so that she can protect Tasuku for a change.

Meanwhile, Rena confides in Kiyoshi that she's worried her fiance had something to do with Teru's attack. Teru told Tasuku earlier that she thinks Kiyoshi and Rena would make a good match. I think so, too. Rena has come a long way since volume 1. I hope she finds real love and happiness.

~4-4.5/5
[Also available on my blog.]

It has been forever since I read this volume, but I do want to write something up for it, since I should be getting the next volume soon.

So. I love this series. I have said something along those lines before, probably in all of the reviews prior to this one. This is just a really good series. It’s sweet and funny and exciting and I really enjoy every volume of it.

At the moment, the series has calmed down a little bit, but it seems like it’s mostly just to add anticipation, to hint at things that are coming. We see that the Enemies are up to something, are hiding something and planning. Not sure what yet, but it’s surely not to be good. There’s also some memories and talk of the past, and one very exciting, badass scene between Kurosaki, Teru, and Akira, who is seriously psychotic.

Aside from that, though, there were several cute and sweet scenes between Teru and Kurosaki. Right now, they’re a little awkward around each other, getting used to being around each other while knowing how the other feels. I really like them together, and I’m looking forward to seeing how their relationship develops even further.

I really liked this volume. I really like this series. It’s definitely one of my favorites, up there rather high, and while I hate having to wait so long for every volume, I love reading each one when I get them. I’m excited to get the next one, which I know I will finish way too quickly.
