Nanami Momozono is alone and homeless after her dad skips town to evade his gambling debts and the debt collectors kick her out of her apartment. So when a man she's just saved from a dog offers her his home, she jumps at the opportunity. But it turns out that his place is a shrine, and Nanami has unwittingly taken over his job as a local deity!
Nanami may have been (begrudgingly) accepted by the other kami at Izumo, but that doesn’t make her any less human or help her deal with her growing feelings for Tomoe. Should she be true to her heart or cut Tomoe loose for his own good? Either way, getting dragged into a group date isn’t going to help matters at all!
Suzuki Julietta is a Japanese manga artist born in the Fukuoka Prefecture. Her pen name comes from a character named Julietta Sakamoto from the seinen manga series, Air Master. She likes cats, koalas, and sharks. According to an interview with Hakusensha, she first started drawing when she was in her second year of elementary school in a sketchbook of Japonica. During her free time, she meets her friends, goes for a drink, or out for a meal. She states that although she doesn't read much, she enjoys works by Junji Itō. Her favourite character is Ashia and mentions that male characters are easier to draw in general.
Unfortunately, I found this one to be pretty boring. I was going to rate it 2 stars but I liked the creativity and Jirou especially (even though he is kind of a brute). Hopefully the next volume is better!
I love this series so much. Totally my comfort romance. This edition was a really good spot to jump back in.
You can really tell Nanami and Tomoe are fantastic main characters because they’re just as magnetic when they’re taking the backseat. There’s a moment in this volume where Tomoe comes along for an adventure, uninvited. When asked why he came along, he says— verbatim— “I enjoy observing others get into trouble.” He’s so terrible. What a bitch. I love him.
The I let reason I took a star off is because some of the plot near the end was a little hard to follow. I’m not too worried because KMK’s arcs are normally pretty short and never overstay their welcome. Julietta Suzuki knows we’re here for Nanami!
And speaking of Nanami. She was incredibly bisexual this volume. If this were a different story, she and Kayako would totally be on the enemies-to-lovers track. Their hangout this volume screams “repressed, rival sapphics”. @Julietta Suzuki— this series has been over for years but it’s not too late to make bi Nanami canon. Please. Please.
Going to try to finish volume 10 then I’m going home!
I continue to adore the series as I read it for the first time. I watched the anime years ago, and I forgot a lot of the details. I am really enjoying this journey of reading it! I continue to adore Tomoe and his snarky sense of love and duty, while Nanami still loves endlessly and offers the best parts of herself. An excellent shojo fantasy all around.
This is one of my favorite arcs in the anime so I'm pretty excited. Learning about Kurama's backstory made him a more sympathetic character, though it also made me curious as to how he ends up becoming an idol. Also, Botanmaru is so cute and the way he looks up to Kurama is adorable.
The focus in this volume shifts to Kurama, one of my favorite characters in the story. Throughout the series thus far, we've known Kurama as being a tengu with the "fallen angel" idol persona that he has cultivated in the human world. Since Kurama interacts more with humans, he's proved to be much more adaptable in the human world compared to the other supernatural characters we've met.
This "cool" persona comes crashing down for the reader as we learn more about Kurama's past and why he left the mountain, and as we learn that he also has vulnerabilities. There is a lot of substance to work with here, and in general, I like the direction the story is turning. Kurama is too interesting a character not to explore further in Kamisama Kiss, and I think the timing is just right in the story.
All that being said, this next story arc isn't completely meshing for me. Things feel slightly off, the humor isn't as sharp, and I finished the volume feeling somewhat let down. We are in the middle of an arc, and I'm anxious to continue the story in volume 10. I hold high expectations for Kurama, and I am hopeful that the next volume will bring more of what I'm looking for as far as his character is concerned.
We're finally learning about Kurama's story and past! I think it's really interesting how he used to be small and weak (and cute like Botanmaru!), but now he's stronger and his people wants him to be their next leader. However, it seems that Kurama is attached to the human world and probably will refuse to do so.
I can't wait to see what he decides to do in the next volume! Although I'm definitely supporting him as a leader (because Jiro is a jerk), I still think he deserves a free life in the human world.
Oh and Suiro is so beautiful! Still funny how he can never make eye contact with Nanami though, because their mountain has always been forbidden to women. No wonder Kurama hates it there.
This is a good volume for which I’m glad. I love the fact that the series is staying at this height. The author introduces us to a new conflict that is really compelling and interesting and also involves some stakes that were missing in the story before.
We get some filler at the beginning with Nanami going to see Kayako. Even though it’s not the best plotline in the world, it’s still cute and wholesome to see Nanami and Kayako getting along when they used to be arguing the entire time. Also I love Kayako’s obsession with Kirihito and how he’s avoiding her.
We also get a chapter of Nanami going out with her friends and it’s kinda whatever. The only good thing about it is seeing Tomoe getting jealous.
But then we get to the Kurama mountain plot and it’s great. I love Botanmaru and him idolizing Kurama (or Shinjuro to be exact). I also love Suiro and how he was always there for Kurama. Also this idiot’s backstory is so sad… no wonder he decided to stay in the human world. Oh, and Jiro seems like an asshole and what’s with the “no talking to girls” rule? It’s stoopid.
Anyway, I think this is still a good volume. Maybe it’s a bit weaker because of the filler at the beginning but I can’t wait to see what happens at Kurama mountain (I kinda forgot the anime a little). I’m giving this one 4 stars and see you soon with volume 10.

This volume has more Kurama in it than any previous volume to date and I love it. Kurama has always deserved more time and he’s finally getting it— he’s even getting his own dedicated character arc and I must say that him and Tomoe and Nanami make such an enjoyable trio and I’ve always thought so, even before getting here. Kurama is really a much better person than he lets on, but we knew that. He’s strong willed but he also is deeply caring and will shoulder burdens alone without ever asking for help. However, that being said, this volume is all about change and so, not only do we see Kurama grow and change, but we see the rest of the cast do so as well. That being said, when will Tomoe be ready to tell Nanami about the feelings her harbors for her? (Also, that guy on the go-kon date totally seemed like one of those one-legged, one-eyed umbrella ayakashi with the large tongues.)
Consistency is the buzzword for this series. If anything, the art is now better than ever. A little fuller and not quite as angular as the earlier volumes.
Otherwise we have Nanami being excellent, her and Tomoe continuing their thing, and the usual supernatural shenanigans. I liked that they spent some time back at school for the change of pace before diving right into another epic adventure.
The epic adventure is interesting enough. This type of folklore is not usually my jam, but as usual it’s being presented in a way that helps it go down smooth. This is a great series and I enjoy it every time I pick up a volume.
This was such a great volume. The story follows the tengu, Kurama, and his backstory. I found this volume exciting because the pacing of the story picked up and it was nice to see how Kurama came to be who he is. Trauma. Honestly, I wish every volume had something this in depth with the character back stories, a few of the volumes feel like filler.
I did enjoy Jiro running into Nanami and immediately becoming infatuated. Although, he's trash and, of course, grabbed Nanami by the arm and threatened her in true tsundere fashion. You know what, I'll admit it, I honestly ship it a little. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of Kurama's arc as he is one of my favorite characters.

Okay, so I was going to quit the to start of the next story arch starts at the end of this book, and it was good enough to grab me.
So Nanami manages to be accepted by the other kami at the banquet/conference. Returning home she gets dragged out on a group date, forcing Tomoe to be sneaky and follow her to ensure her 'safety'. The dude be jealous. But it works out, of course.
This volume then turns it's attention to giving us a cliff hanger.
I'm going to leave the same review for all the volumes. I LOVED this manga so much and am trying to collect all the physical copies. I was originally reading it online when it was still coming out
There are a lot of characters. Only some are the main characters, but we see and get to know the side characters also. World building was nicely done in typical youkai fashion, and the romance was very cute
This one shows the ending of the God convention, and we start my favorite arc, which is the tenju arc she finds the little kid, and he’s looking for the rockstar. They find the rockstar, and they decide to go to the mountain and that’s when she finds out the women are not allowed in the mountain, and they have to take the medicine to his father, so they agreed to help him and trying to make his father better. Looking forward to the next one.

We’re in the mountains! It was great to see the Tengu home; and the Tengu children were so cute. Learning Kurama’s backstory was really interesting, and heartbreaking - and it’s a nice change to see people appreciating Nanami rather than immediately dismissing her. We had some tiny advancements to Nanami and Tomoe’s relationship too
May or may not drop this series :( It's getting a little boring and convoluted. How can it be both, not sure. It's a bummer bc I do love these characters and want to actually get to the romance part, but it's taking so long 😭 (Says the girl who is 48 volumes deep into Yona of the Dawn, the slowest burn there ever was lmao)
