The little dog trembles and whimpers, but refuses to move. Maggie reaches further into the undergrowth, trying to tempt it out. But as she moves closer, she sees something that stops her heart—a tiny, shivering baby, wrapped in a thin, pink blanket, saved only by its loyal protector.
There’s a ferocious storm heading toward the isolated town of Coyote Cove when Chief Maggie Riley gets the call every cop dreads. Three bodies have been found on Rattlesnake Mountain, half a day’s hike from civilization. And when Maggie finally reaches the site, exhausted and freezing, she discovers something even more terrifying—a tiny baby girl, kept alive only by the warmth of a small dog who refuses to leave her side.
As Maggie races the baby to safety, she wonders, why on earth the family risked hiking the mountain in this weather? Who were they and who could possibly have killed them?
A former Detective, Maggie may be an experienced investigator, but she’s still an unwelcome newcomer. Battling town prejudice, her fears for the orphaned baby, and the increasingly dangerous weather, Maggie soon realizes the case is far more complicated than she could have imagined. The family is not who they seemed at all.
With Coyote Cove cut off by the storm, Maggie knows that wherever the killer is, they won’t be able to leave. Stuck in town with a murderer on the loose, Maggie must race to find them before anyone else gets hurt. But she hasn’t counted on the killer taking matters into their own hands, and going after Maggie first…

Their Angel’s Cry is the second book in a a gripping new series by Shannon Hollinger. This book had me from the very first page and did not let go! I loved the setting, the atmosphere, the mystery, and the characters.
A horrific discovery had been made on Rattlesnake Mountain and Chief Maggie Riley takes the call. Bodies have been found by hikers and when Maggie makes it to the snowy location, she also finds a tiny baby and a dog in the underbrush. Who killed the family? What was the motive? With a storm brewing, Maggie is on the hunt for answers and a killer!
Atmospheric, tense, well written, and hard to put down! Maggie is still dealing with the fallout from The Girl Who Lied and the town's reaction to her. She keeps doing her job with quiet determination. Plus, the character's secrets play a role in this book as well.
I enjoyed the tension in this book as well as the atmosphere. The snow, the small town and a killer set the stage. The main characters are also a big draw and have me wanting more of them, their backstories and their relationships to each other.
This is a promising new series that is only getting better. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
Chief Maggie Reilly is called to a scene on a mountain where someone on a hike has encountered multiple bodies.
Maggie hikes up to the scene, sees no obvious sign of cause of death but as she's waiting for back up to arrive, she hears the sound of a dog. That dog is protecting and may have saved a sole survivor, a baby 😭.
Who killed the people on the mountain and why?
This was a solid police procedural, with some aspects that require suspend disbelief. To be honest, it wasn't overly thrilling but still a good journey and good read.
I have never lived somewhere where it snows and I enjoyed the scene and reading more about how people who do live or endure.
The dog parts in this are just so special and written well, portraying the loyalty and love for and from pets is just perfect. I also enjoy the side stories about Maggie and her life outside of work.
My main issue with this is that there's a bit of repetition, really stating the obvious and writing as though there's an expectation the reader cannot fill in any blanks. It didn't ruin the story, but it gets a bit frustrating at times. Also, is it really possible in America that one cop would be allowed to work in a town without a lieutenant or any kind of colleague with training?!

It’s been a while since I read, The Girl Who Lied, Shannon’s first book in the Chief Maggie Riley crime series and I had forgotten the heart pounding suspense!
Their Angel’s Cry lived up to the same expectations! I could not put it down!!! The cover blurb says it’s a Totally Compelling and Jaw-Dropping crime thriller and it’s the truth!!
I almost got whiplash because of all the suspense happening at once. Each character’s point of view is told with their own chapter heading and they alternate chronologically.
I can’t say much or I’ll spoil it but if you like thrillers you have to check this one out. It can be read alone but you will miss out on the story building of each character. There is enough in the book to give you an overall idea though.
The book summary lays out the primary storyline, which takes place a few months after the last installment. Maggie is now looking to hire another deputy to replace Murphy who was killed in the last installment. Maggie and Steve are now engaged, and they apparently still seem to have a lot of secrets between them. Yeah, that’s a wonderful way to start a marriage – NOT!!!
The book summary lays out the primary storyline so I’m not going to repeat it here. The prologue gives the reader the impression that someone, a lone hiker (no name mentioned), above on a clifftop, saw what happened to the dead people. There is a large cast of characters in this story. Besides Maggie and Steve, there is Brad, a 20-something, and part-time retail clerk/hiking guide. Then there is Cheryl, the hiker who found the dead family and called it in to the authorities, and Glen, another hiker on the mountain. Then there is Erika, a 47yr old forensic pathologist for the state police, and Micah, a 20-something out of towner with a long arrest record.
There is also a secondary storyline where Maggie is dealing with a lot of harassment from the townspeople over the death of Murphy, who was beloved by the townspeople and don’t even get me started on the bozo Maggie interviewed for the job or Officer Miller, the misogynistic jerk from the state police. Then there is the local kid who is a bit of juvenile delinquent. Yeah, they’re not suspicious at all!!! To make matters worse, Steve’s judgmental mother shows up out of the blue and blatantly dislikes and disrespects Maggie.
From pretty early in the story (right around the time the baby was discovered), I already had my suspicions on who the killer could be as well as who the lone hiker was. This is one of the things I love about crime thrillers and murder mysteries, figuring out “whodunit.” I simply can’t help myself. But hey, based on the crazy story Hollinger brought us last time, I’m not going to hold on too tight to any my predictions this early in the story. Hollinger has proven that she can make all kinds of mayhem happen at any time with her crazy twists and turns😊 That’s another thing I like about crime thrillers and murder mysteries.
Most of the story revolves around the investigation of the three people that were murdered and what they were doing up there with a new baby, especially with a storm on the way. Maggie also starts looking at all the outsiders as potential suspects. Once the storm hits – ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE!!! In what I am becoming to believe is typical Hollinger style, there are some crazy twists and turns along with a boatload of heart-pumping, kindle gripping scenes that, once again, kept me up waaayyy past my sensible bedtime, for a work night, finishing the book because I simply could not go to sleep until I knew how it ended.
I’m obsessed with this series now and have already added the third installment to my to-read list. I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for sending me this eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Chief Maggie Riley returns in this 2nd in the series. She is called up to a mountain trail where three bodies have been discovered. She gets a local guide to accompany her, and they start the half day hike. She is exhausted and freezing when she gets there and starts investigating the scene. While there, she discovers a small dog guarding an infant in the bushes.
The investigating starts with trying to identify the victims and their cause of death, in order to determine next of kin for the baby. Once they identify how they were killed, they realize a dangerous killer may still be in town. It’s up to Maggie to follow the clues before more people are in danger, including herself.
I am really enjoying this series! The mystery part is well done and keeps you guessing. But Maggie and her fiancé Steve are interesting people…in love, but both with their own secrets. Many of the townspeople are not in her side, due to events in the 1st book… as well as dealing with misogyny accompanying a woman in a non traditional role in a small town. But she is building relationships and friendships. I’m excited to see what the future has in store for these characters.
Reading this book straight after the first was a great decision but I know I’m going to have to wait a while now for the third book. This one was just as good as the first book and it was great to catch up with Chief Maggie Riley again. Maggie receives a call to say some dead bodies have been found up a mountain so she heads up there to investigate. Three people are found dead and with no obvious signs of death, Maggie calls in help to carry out post mortems. When she discovers a baby and a dog, she wonders if this can get any stranger. The baby is alive and has been hidden, but by who? There’s several suspects as it turns out the three people were murdered, but it’s hard to guess which one is guilty, as they are all hiding something. When a severe snow storm hits Coyote Cove more than one life is in danger and Maggie needs help fast. Another brilliant book from Shannon Hollinger that I’d highly recommend. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Their Angel's Cry, book two in the Chief Maggie Riley series, picks up from where book one ended. Most of the residents of Coyote Cove hate her, but Maggie doesn't allow the hatred to deter her from carrying out her duties. It didn't help that one of their own died because of her previous case. They blamed her despite it not being her fault. Luckily, this is the case, as she faces the undaunting task of unravelling a mind-boggling situation.
Her discovery of three corpses in the mountains, where the cause of death, was a mystery within itself. However, what was even more shocking was the baby and dog she discovered near the crime scene. 1. Why were the victims on the mountain? 2. How did the baby survive?
Their Angel's Cry was a brilliant addition to the series. In this instalment, Maggie's detective skills played a prominent role. She gained a wonderful support system throughout the investigation, one of which came from an unexpected source. The mystery in this instalment was quite twisty, and it left me guessing from start to finish. This time around, figuring out the who, why and how proved a challenge. This featured many suspects, who all appeared to have a motive. Funny enough, it was the one person whom I did not suspect that turned out to be the villain. Talk about a plot twist.
If you love police procedurals, I strongly encourage you to pick up this series. It has everything that lovers of this genre would love. A well-written mystery, a strong female and great supporting cast.
Their Angel’s Cry by Shannon Hollinger Chief Maggie Riley #2
Gripping, dark, and gritty ~ compelled to continue reading into the wee hours of the morning!
What I liked: * * Chief Maggie Riley: brilliant, capable, skilled detective, listens to her gut instincts, moved to Coyote Cove, Maine after a personal loss, engaged to Steve, upholds the law, working solo with Sue as her assistant after losing her lieutenant in the previous book, is pushed physically and mentally in this book, have a feeling she has an agenda related to the secrets she is keeping that will play out in this series * Steve Winters: financial wiz who lost his fire and moved to the country, loves his rather difficult if loving mother, understands and loves Maggie, has secrets that will be exposed in time-I think, there for those he loves * The plot, pacing, setting, and writing * Dr. Erika Ricky: medical examiner, cat owner, steps out of her comfort zone in this book and grows a lot, someone I hope to see more of * Sue: Maggie’s assistant, a child guardian and qualified to step in when children are at risk, capable, caring, good friend * The various characters that might be the killer of the three people found on the mountain – and finding out which one actually did the deed ~ also enjoyed finding out what the others were really up to * Laurel: protective canine that heroically saved a baby * Looking forward to what will happen in book three
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like * The evilness of some of the amoral criminals in this story and the harm they did to more than one person
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC – This is my honest review.
Chief Magggie Riley is back again for the second installment of the series and if possible no#2 is even better than #1.
An almighty storm is heading towards Coyote Cove when Maggie recieves a call that the bodies of three family members have been found on Rattlesnake Mountain, a few hours hike from town.
Calling on a local hiker to help her, Maggie finally reaches the site and is startled to find a baby hidden in the undergrowth, being protected by an injured dog. Maggie goes against all her instincts and leaves the bodies in situ so that she can get the baby and pup to safety before the storm hits.
Once again she has no choice but to bring in the Staties (State Police) to help with the investigation. Alongside the Staties Maggie enlists the help of her 'friend' Crime Scene Technician Bridgette and lab volunteer Erika.
After what happened with her then Deputy, Dale *NO SPOILERS* Maggie is still dealing with the small towns distaste for her and is now having to head up the small police unit herself. On top of the stress of working solo, Maggie and Steve still have their secrets.
I've got to say one of the best things about this series is the characters. They are fantastically written in a way that makes them completely relatable - I LOVE Sue!
As the investigation gets underway there seem to be more questions than answers and Maggie has to dig deep to work out just who these people were, how they ended up murdered and why!
Can Maggie catch the killer before the killer catches her?
Massive thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
As if the discovery of three dead bodies isn’t shocking enough, a tiny baby and a little dog are found as well. Desperate to get the baby to warmth and safety, Chief Maggie Riley certainly has her hands full. Why were they all in the mountains in such inclement weather? Even more, how did the baby survive?
Maggie struggles to find the identity of the dead bodies, all while remaining concerned for the welfare of the young baby. As the weather turns worse, Maggie finds herself in a race against time.
What an excellent second book in a thrilling new series by Shannon Hollinger. Thankfully I was able to binge the first book and also the third book, The Shadow Girl. Maggie is quite an interesting character, and her back story caught my attention, as well as the small town politics she is living with now. Also, the unraveling of Maggie’s past as well as her fiancé Steve’s secrets added an additional layer to this second book. I loved the twists in this story and this is one series I am eager to follow.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
This is the second book in the series about a female chief of police in a rural Maine town. I enjoyed it and it was a quick read but I wasn’t quite as impressed as the first one. There is a fair bit of suspension of disbelief necessary but I like her characters and I’ll keep reading the series.
I read a digital review copy of this book via NetGalley.
this series is so addictive. A family goes up. Rattle Snake Mountain. but don't come down alive. Chief Maggie Riley gets the call a hiker has found them. After what happened with her police partner Maggie is not liked buy the people in the town. but what Maggie find up there is a little shock for her? Steve still keeping his secrets and they get a surprise visitor. Maggie has to catch the killer solo. Another brilliant read from this author will keep you gripped until the end so recommend.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for access to this arc in exchange for my honest review.
This is the second book that I've read from this author/serie. What a ride into Chief Maggie Riley's life.
When everyone seems to be hating her and everyone seems to have secrets/things to hide, Maggie Riley needs to find who is behind the murder of 3 bodies found in the mountains, while juggling with her personal life.
While I mix the different names/POV sometimes, I really love the way the author writes, the suspense, the twists. At the end, it's always the last person I thought about !!! I am really impatient to read the 3rd book of the serie..
Chief Riley is in for a new, horrible case that seems quite weird. Why has a couple been murdered while hiking, and why is there a baby, not the couples' baby, found alive close by? This small town has probably the dodgiest characters I have ever read about.
Maggie is still trying to convince the locals that a woman, an out-of-towner, can perfectly well function as the Chief. It would be easier if her deputy would fully trust her, but he has problems of his own. So does Maggie. Although, she and Steve are getting serious, and that sadly means they have to open up old wounds and share to each others about their troubled pasts, but not everything.
This is a complex case, but bit by bit the team, and Steve figure it out. The weather does not help, and most of the locals agree with the weather. A great story, with some character growth, entangled with the troubling pasts of several characters, makes this an excellent read!
I’m loving the small town mystery and characters in Coyote Cove. I appreciated the mystery being completely different than the first book as well! It has me hooked as it slowly unveils the main character’s backstory… I will absolutely be reading the next one in the series! I need answers on this town where moose outnumber people three to one. Thank you so much to Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I started this right after reading Book 1 because I couldn’t get enough of Chief Maggie Riley and Coyote Cove.
This case is so sinister, a family murdered on a mountain top with no obvious injuries and a little innocent baby left behind, how strange ?.
It’s down to Maggie to solve this, that’s if she can find the strength.
Wow and just wow! This story was another heart pounding read, with some more unexpected and shocking twists that I never saw coming, once again Maggie showed just what she’s capable of and omg the huge cliffhanger and revelation at the end of the book has me counting down the days until book 3!.
Thier Angel's Cry is yet another fabulous book from the Coyote Cove/Maggie Riley series. I loved every part, every character of the book because yes- dogs! Yes the book is heart pounding for the various intricately narrated scenarios but for me additionally because I was really rooting for that pup more than anyone else! With every book Maggie's and Steve's past is teased & in this book we get the chance to catch a glimpse of Steve's side of the family for a bit. I loved how the book made way for a couple of characters that I only hope will continue to make an appearance in future books. There's something quite captivating about books set in small, remote towns that give it extra "creepers jeepers" and this series captures that nuance perfectly. I can't wait to see what riveting adventures the next book holds!
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture & Shannon Hollinger for the arc!
I want to start off by saying thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture, and Shannon Hollinger for the approval to read and review this book.
Their Angel’s Cry is the second book in The Chief Maggie Reilly series. This novel is another perfect dark thriller suspense. If I said it once, I will say it again: Hollinger knows how to write a book that hooks you at the first chapter and keeps you on your toes until the end. She truly does specialize in organizing and presenting multiple POVs in such a way that keeps you understanding who is who.
This novel starts a few months after book one, and boy, does Coyote Cove holds a lot of secrets.
This novel was a great addition to the series; I was engrossed in the complex plot, which kept me intrigued and wanting to know who did it. I loved getting to see more of the challenges and relationship between Maggie and Steve. Although the two have tension and secrets, its apparent that they both care for each other. I want to note that I really enjoyed the concept of there being more than one suspect. Each suspect brought up had a dark past or behavior that would make them the prime candidate for who murdered the three victims. With all three hiding something it made guessing who a beautiful challenge, which in turn made the reveal so worth it.
Another 5-star read from Shannon Hollinger is becoming a new favorite author of mine. Highly Recommend!
Their Angel's Cry is my first introduction to author Shannon Hollinger and main protagonist Coyote Cove Chief of Police Maggie Riley.
Who starts her day confronted by a dummy hung outside her office and then it gets progressively worse. When a call alerts her to a possible murder scene at the top of Rattlesnake Mountain.
So Maggie takes off with the aid of Brad a part time guide and pot user. Who agrees to take her to the location not knowing what awaits them.
And it's a shocking scene in an isolated area, half a days hike from civilisation lie three dead bodies and two members of the public. Who claim they just stumbled upon them.
Then Maggie whilst guarding the scene and awaiting the M.E, forensics and state police finds something even more disturbing. A baby; blue and barely breathing. Along with a dog that seems to have rescued the child.
But how is the baby related to the three victims? And why did they all end up dead on top of a mountain?
That's what Maggie is determined to find out. But her task is not an easy one. Thanks to no lieutenant, a lack of support from state police and a storm that has cut off the isolated town.
And with great pacing, plenty of twists and turns. Not to mention a killer, I did not see coming. This was a story I could not stop reading. And I really liked the multiple points of view. Which is not something I'm usually a fan off.
I would happily recommend Their Angel's Cry to all.
My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an early copy of Their Angel's Cry. 😊
Their Angel’s Cry by Shannon Hollinger is the second book in the excellent Chief Maggie Riley series and this book was another excellent read. Just like the last book I was hooked from the beginning till the very end
There’s another ferocious storm heading toward the isolated town of Coyote Cove when Chief Maggie Riley gets the call every cop dreads. "Three bodies have been found on Rattlesnake Mountain" and this is half a day’s hike from civilisation. When Maggie finally reaches the site, she is exhausted and freezing, she soon discovers something even more terrifying, a tiny baby girl, she is kept alive only by the warmth of a small dog who refuses to leave her side. Time is running out and needs to get the baby to safety and warmth. But, she is wondering why a family has risked hiking this mountain in this awful weather !
Who were they?
Who could possibly have killed them?
and Why?
With Coyote Cove cut off by the storm, Maggie knows that wherever the killer is, they won’t be able to leave. They are stuck in the town with a murderer on the loose, Maggie has to race against time to find them before anyone else gets hurt or they leave the town.
WoW another excellent book with brilliant twists and turns throughout. I highly recommend you read the first book first to learn more about Chief Maggie Riley background.
Big Thank you to Netgalley, the author Shannon Hollinger and Bookouture for my eARC in exchange for my honest review.
In this second installment of the Chief Maggie Riley series, Maggie is called to the scene when three bodies are found on a mountain top. When Maggie hikes up to investigate, she finds a shocking scene: not just three dead bodies with no apparent cause of death, but also a tiny baby hidden in the brush, fiercely protected by an injured dog. None of it makes any sense to her – who hikes up a mountain with an infant? Maggie has a mystery on her hands and it’s up to her to solve it and protect the people of Coyote Cove.
The mystery is a solid one, with plenty of suspects and red herrings to keep the reader guessing. The race to solve the crime in the middle of a blizzard is thrilling, and the reveal is so satisfying because it’s genuinely surprising but you can also look back and see the breadcrumbs that led up to it.
The characters are what make this series really shine! I’m becoming so enamored with the people of Coyote Cove! Maggie is an appealing heroine, she’s tough, feisty, but also vulnerable. She’s got a solid cast supporting her: her fiancé Steve, her trusty admin Sue (I love Sue!), and Margot, the curmudgeonly motel owner. Maggie and Steve both have mysterious darkness in their past, and I can’t wait for the next book, The Shadow Girl, to explore them more in depth.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me an advance copy of this book.
A mountain top death scene leaves both Maggie and me mystified. I kept trying to make the pieces fit in the wrong slots. The weather description was enough to make me grateful I don’t live in backwoods Maine. Coyote Cove should be called Kook Cove because it attracts its fair share of people who are very questionable. I laughed at the appearance of one character and the phrase using a shark and a seal. The real star of the book was a little ball of fur who protected two characters with the ferociousness of a lion. What a stellar puppy! I’m loving this series! Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the early read.
Book two in the Chief Maggie Riley series finds Maggie responding to a report of 3 bodies found by hikers on a mountain, a half a day’s hike from civilization. She enlists the help of a local guide to reach the scene, and once there, she discovers a live baby girl hidden in the bushes, along with a dog who refuses to leave her side. Added to Maggie’s plate is a visit from her future mother-in-law who does not approve of her, a pretentious and uncooperative State Police officer assigned to the case, a town that still has issues trusting her, and a blizzard that cuts the town off from the outside world, trapping the murderer there with them. This is a real page-turner that will keep you guessing until the very end. This has quickly become one of my favorite series to read, and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and author Shannon Hollinger for the advance read copy of this book.
An intriguing mystery, full of twists and turns. Who killed the three hikers, why and how? Where did the baby and its guardian dog come from? Lots of suspects and supposed allies, none of whom are quite what they seem. I read it in one day; didn't want to put it down.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #Bookouture for the ARC for #TheirAngelsCry by #ShannonHollinger. I am loving the Chief Maggie Riley series. They are amazing. The characters are relatable, mysteries, murder and just all around crazy. Should be way more than 5stars.
Chief Maggie Riley gets a call of 3 bodies found on Rattlesnake Mountain, as storm is coming and there is no time to waste. Still down a lieutenant she is the only one to go up and investigate. As she looks around, she hears something and finds a dog but that is not all. The storm is shutting the town down and so the suspects are all locked in. Book 2 was just a quick page turning as book 1 – hoping for many more books in this series.
Their Angel’s Cry by Shannon Hollinger due to be published August 2, 2023 by Bookouture!
I absolutely love Shannon Hollinger and everything she writes. They’re such fast reads and easy to get into! The characters are very likeable. This is the first book I’ve read in the Chief Maggie Riley series but not the first book I’ve read from the author. I cannot wait to read more about Maggie! Highly recommend this book and all of her others!!
I want to thank Shannon Hollinger, Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me the chance to read this ARC.
Bodies of two men and a woman are found dead in the mountains and Maggie must investigate. But soon she will also find a puppy protecting a baby and there will be more to unsolve than just who murdered the three victims.
This was a fantastic follow-up to book one. Getting to know the character of Maggie more, Shannon writes a fantastic and realistic main character. This narrative was atmospheric, with detailed descriptions I needed to know what happened next. A great book two in this series that I would highly recommend
