The Loss of Sunlight

Rate this book
Sylvie believes she is the perfect modern image of a southern belle. She has a fabulous boyfriend, fashionable career aspirations and everyone is always so eager to help her when she runs into a problem. But her problems were never quite as bad as dying before, and now her biggest problem is trying to keep Aidan Pope, a devilishly handsome man--who insists on calling her by another woman’s name--from ruining her perfect life. Aidan is convinced that Sylvie is a woman born between heaven and hell who can save three worlds from a war that is inevitable in a reality where angels kill and demons can be compassionate. As Sylvie begins to discover the truth of her origins, she comes to the understanding that she can never have the life she thought she wanted, her days of being a pampered princess are numbered, and she must develop her power enough to defeat her aunt, the devil incarnate, and a woman with whom Aidan may still be in love.

About the author

Lia Black

12 books145 followers
Lia Black tends to do everything the hard way; beginning with being born backwards into the world and now raising a teenage daughter by herself in conservative Upstate NY. Her career choices are no less extreme, including occupations of fine artist, computer geek, firefighter, and mortician’s assistant— just to name a few.

A fellow Author describes Black's mind as "a glorious kaleidoscope of f*ckeduppery"; she loves the challenge of writing about people who probably have no business being together on the same planet, and who occasionally deal with questionable sanity/morality. It’s fun to glue broken things together and try to make something interesting and new.
--She especially loves broken boys who have lots of fascinating pieces.

Her characters often suffer through the worlds she creates for them, which leaves them a little cranky and sometimes less lovable than others in a romance genre. Yet Black swears that someday, "there will be comedy."

There is…

… a tiny little demon fairy named “Honey”

… a beautiful tattooed “Guardian” shape shifter named “Aidan”

… very bad angels

… very good demons

There are...

… rifts

… portals

… darkened daylight

… Incubi

… warthog looking men,

… and a woman who could rival Queen Betsy at the beginning.

There is…

…soul sucking,

…life giving,

…bloodletting,

…dream walking,

…and witty dialogue in between.

There are scenes that reminded me of Groundhog Day, characters that were so unique, sexual tension that made me hold my breath in anticipation, and graphic well written gore scenes that I always love in urban fantasies.

There is a hugely satisfying ending (no cliffhanger) and a main character that transforms from a shopping princesses to a kick ass queen with an attitude.

This is an indie read that has minimal grammatical errors (at least I think), nonstop action, and an extremely unique storyline.

This is NOT a vampire book. It is the oh-shit-the-world-is-ending-and-I-have-to-save-it book.

I want more from this author and I hope to read more from her in the future.

This book was a fantastic find and I hope others read it and enjoy it as much as I did. I picked it up on Amazon as a freebie. Though it's no longer free, I think it's well worth the $4.99 price-tag.

Meet Sylvie. She is a high maintenance Southern Belle who works as a fashion merchandiser for a department store. Her toughest day to day decisions are deciding what to wear.
~ I had just enough time to put on my gorgeous and stylishly understated gold sandals that showed off my perfect French pedicure and long shapely legs, then for a final twirl in the mirror, before I grabbed my gold Prada clutch and headed out the door of my apartment.

She doesn't even have to order food for herself. Her boyfriend David takes care of it.
~David Thomas Sterling was a handsome and successful young entrepreneur, and a man who understood how to treat a lady of my southern sensibilities. I was born and raised with the knowledge that life had a way of taking care of young ladies such as myself--and so it seemed only natural that David would take care of me.

The beginning of the book starts with Sylvie getting ready to meet her boyfriend, David, for a brunch date. Deciding to walk through the park on her way there, something happens that changes her life forever.

Meet Aidan Pope.
~As near as I could figure, the stranger was in his early thirties, at least six-foot five, and lifted weights—a lot. His broad chest and shoulders tapered to a trim waist. His skin, stretched taut over chiseled features and high sharp cheekbones, was smooth and pale, so light and flawless it seemed unnatural. On his forehead, around his eyes, and down his cheeks, were bizarre tattoos, like an intricate black mask. His hair, brushing past his shoulders, was the color and sheen of a raven’s wing. More tattoos peeked out of the collar of his shirt and covered both arms as well as the backs of his hands. They weren’t pin-up girls, Chinese dragons or anything recognizable as anything recognizable.

Aidan informs Sylvie that she has a destiny to fulfill. Through most of the book, Aidan is by her side. And when he's not? I want to cry and I want him to come back. I won't lie, the sexual tension between these two is fantastic. The plot is action packed. So many things happen, so many things that we don't even know what is real and what isn't anymore.

There is such great character development for Sylvie. Sure, she starts out as a brat, but so much changes. I find it's not the challenges she faces, but how she handles them that make her such a strong woman. She grows into a great heroine.

The plot is phenomenal. The writing is great. The descriptions are fantastic. The sexual tension is amazing. Oh yeah, I said that already, but it's SOOO TRUE! Aidan, you are now inducted into my fictional boyfriends hall of fame.

I hope to read more soon from Miss Black whether it's a continuation of these wonderful characters or something new, I'm sold.

Loooong Over 50 chapters to wade through

I literally got so bored with the stupid, narcissistic heroine I began skipping 5 chapters at a time .... and still had no problem following the story line. Yawn. Actually a great concept, hence the 3 stars. Just way too wordy, and constantly rehashing the same arguments got on my last nerve. The last 4 chapters were outstanding!

I am having a love-hate relationship with this book.

It is not a bad read but there are so much similarities with the Fever series to this one. It felt as though this is the summary of the 5 books crammed into one book with a slightly different theme.
I really hate reading about airheaded women. It is simply annoying and a hair-pulling experience for me.

Overall, the story is really ok. Just doesn't gives me the wow factor.
I think the few chapters of reading air-head Sylvie really put me off.

What are the similarities that made me link Fever series to this book? I can tell you some..

I might do a re-read to give another chance but for now, no.
The impression I had for the Fever series is still going strong and it is really hard to give a chance to something similar when the protagonist is annoying the hell out of me.

For me, the greatest strength of this book is the cast of characters. A collection of three-dimensional people who have real and satisfying relationships, and who are transformed through the story.

The protagonist starts out as bit of a spoiled twit, but don't give up on her. The reward is to watch her grow and develop into an altogether more formidable woman and a heroine worth cheering for.

A lot of clever dialogue, an involved plot with some great scenes and fun twists, plus some sexy bits that are enjoyably steamy.

I'm glad I picked this up, and I'm interested in seeing what Ms Black does next.

I read a sample of this book on a whim, thinking it was another vampire romance. Thankfully it had nothing to do with vampires, and it had an amazing plot, so I immediately bought it and divulged myself in it. It's one of the best books I've read this year. Sylvie starts out as a beautiful self-obsessed southern belle, but starts to learn that beauty isn't everything--and that, in fact, some of the most beautiful creatures are evil. It's an all-around wonderful storyline, cast, and plot. I definitely look forward to more Lia Black books.

Wow, I was blown away by this book. It's incredibly immersive and the author has created some interesting characters. It isn't at all what I expected, but in a good way!
