The tigers that crouched in Blake's baleful spiritual forests, the roses and sunflowers whose mystical properties he rendered with such accurate music, the angels with whom he wrestled and who delivered prophetic books to him late at night, were literally more real to him than the London, where, in the period of the French Revolution, he lived out his life of poverty and indignant isolation. One of England's great lyric poets; one of Europe's great visionaries.
William Blake was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake's work is today considered seminal and significant in the history of both poetry and the visual arts.
Blake's prophetic poetry has been said to form "what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the language". His visual artistry has led one modern critic to proclaim him "far and away the greatest artist Britain has ever produced." Although he only once travelled any further than a day's walk outside London over the course of his life, his creative vision engendered a diverse and symbolically rich corpus, which embraced 'imagination' as "the body of God", or "Human existence itself".
Once considered mad for his idiosyncratic views, Blake is highly regarded today for his expressiveness and creativity, and the philosophical and mystical currents that underlie his work. His work has been characterized as part of the Romantic movement, or even "Pre-Romantic", for its largely having appeared in the 18th century. Reverent of the Bible but hostile to the established Church, Blake was influenced by the ideals and ambitions of the French and American revolutions, as well as by such thinkers as Emanuel Swedenborg.
Despite these known influences, the originality and singularity of Blake's work make it difficult to classify. One 19th century scholar characterised Blake as a "glorious luminary", "a man not forestalled by predecessors, nor to be classed with contemporaries, nor to be replaced by known or readily surmisable successors."
Läste denna tillsammans med Olga Tokarczuks Styr din plog över de dödas ben, och läste därför framförallt ur "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell" och "The Pickering Manuscript". Dubbelläsningen funkade jättebra och Olgas bok berikades verkligen av den.
Blake för egen del är väldigt bra.

Read alongside The Complete Illuminated Books for the full, somewhat unwieldy Blake experience. I don't know of a good one-book solution for the dilemma that a) there's little point reading Blake as plain text and b) the illuminated books are often pretty illegible. So two books it is. Plus this one has all the great stuff that exists only in manuscript.
The Marriage of Heaven and Hell is the best part. The longer prophetic works are mostly fairly impenetrable for me, though the language is always inspired.
William Blake is one of those brilliant visionary poets whose works I return to again and again because I always find something new in them and see the world anew, which is what I think great writers do. My only quibbles with this edition of Blake is that there are so few of his extremely imaginative illustrations. Still, I cannot complain too much when I can read lines like: Love seeketh not itself to please, Nor for itself hath any care, But for another gives its ease, And builds a Heaven in Hell's despair.
Sry, but still... poetry is not kind of genre I'd like to read.... Actually I had a feeling that I'm reading a bible or a fantasy book and so I've been waiting for something really important... Like knowledge or smth but on the page #335 I actually decided to give up( Because I found myself wasting time on someone's layout of imagination(
