Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Scott Everly. Current On vacation. Mostly. Keeping a sexy, smart-mouthed biologist out of trouble. Keeping himself out of trouble…and out of her bed!
Semper Paratus. Always Prepared. It's the Coast Guard motto. But Lieutenant Commander Scott Everly sure wasn't prepared for the sight of red-hot marine biologist Jackie Birchard in her red-hot bikini. She's wading in dangerous waters, and even if he's off duty, Scott isn't about to let this sassy little mermaid out of his sight….
With a major research project on the line, and a chance to prove herself, Jackie isn't interested in anything resembling a romantic complication. Then again, isn't raw, lusty sex—especially with a tasty specimen such as Scott—a basic human necessity?
After all, the U.S. Coast Guard is always prepared…and ready for action, too!
Lori Wilde can’t remember a time when she didn’t want to write. She even went to nursing school so she could have a schedule flexible enough to allow her to write on the side. She nursed for 20 years, working in a variety of settings from the newborn nursery to the recovery room, to dialysis. But she never lost her desire to write.
She sold her first book in 1994 to Silhouette Romance but later discovered she had a flair for comedy and branched out to Harlequin Duets and now, to Blaze.
Lori is an adventuresome soul who loves to travel. She’s taken flying lessons, completed two marathons, rode in a hot-air balloon, performed with a professional jazz band, traveled Europe as a teenager, hiked volcanoes in Hawaii, trod on glaciers in Alaska, shot white-water rapids, water-skied, snow-skied, raced all-terrain vehicles, bodysurfed in the Gulf of Mexico, and photographed grizzly bears in Yellowstone.
She lives in her native Texas, with her own real-life hero, Bill.
Coast Guard hero, on vacation and celibate for a while, meets heroine on the sea, tries to make conversation with her, she shoots him down. He hears the drug lord who killed his father is back, suspects she's a mule, finds out she is the daughter of a famous oceanographer doing research. Heroine has daddy issues because father doesn't pay her attention, totally job oriented, no time for romance, suggests no strings sex, gets complicated. Not a very believable romance.
Romance novels are not my typical read. Being a woman in the coast guard myself, I really wanted to see what this book was all about. I truly did enjoy this story, from beginning to end.
I liked the characters, especially Scott. First from this author, might or might not read another.
Good enough story, but a couple of things about the writing bugged me. The quotes at the beginning of each chapter became stupid really fast. She would quote something one of the characters just said a page ago (or later on the same page) and often nothing momentous. If it had been all Coast Guard sayings and such, might have been interesting, but instead it was just unnecessary and annoying. Also, some of the writing during the love scenes was cheesy and trite.
This is the first book of Lori's I have read that wasn't about Texas. It is such a good story. The characters were interesting. There was plenty of romance and intrigue. Loved it!
"Born Ready" is a great summer beach read - Florid Keys setting, cute romance between a marine biology student and a Coast Guard officer, a little bit of action/suspense. Nicely done.
My actual rating was 3.75 out of 5. It was a fun, quick read. I enjoyed the story and found Jackie and Scott to be engaging characters. I loved the give and take between them.
