After running a Minecraft program at the library where I work and watching kids experience the altered state of consciousness that is collective gaming, I wanted to learn more. I started where they might have, and rather than read a how-to manual, have picked up a novel and graphic novel. After reading this book (the graphic novel), I totally get the hype. Some of it, anyway. Keep in mind that as an Elder Millennial my street cred is low, and my gaming experience is limited to SNES, and getting destroyed in Mario Kart (while finding comfort in the exploratory worlds of Donkey Kong).
Graphic novels tend to get a bad rap for being low-brow or not as intense as fiction "proper" (i.e. literary fiction). What I found while reading this book though, is that there was amazing vocabulary challenges, and all of the elements of novels that strengthen literacy development. There are plot twists, and turns galore, with life skills, critical thinking encouragement, and moral lessons strewn throughout. If you have or are a still-developing reader, this is a great book. If you're an adult looking for low-stakes entertainment, this is also a great addition to your TBR list.
As for the plot, Herobrine is peak villain, and Runt is an unlikely hero. Many times throughout his trials and tribulations in the book I could absolutely relate. I think that there's a whole lot of Runt in all of us. Many of the people who have left reviews are adults, but for those reading the reviews and wanting to know if this series would be good for their kiddo, or reluctant reader: most definitely. There are themes of friendship, repair and forgiveness, as well as Runt's character development that was just plain heartwarming. The world that the authors created comes to life through illustrations, as is the graphic novel format, but what I loved most about this book was the inner world of the characters that is just as richly drawn that leaps off the page.
Whether you're a graphic novel fan, are looking for a great read for a graphic novel fan, or looking for books that cater to the gamer-more-than-reader crowd, the Diary of an 8-Bit Warrior graphic novel series is a sure bet.
