Dragons in the Wind #3

Scales of Destruction

Rate this book
The scales of Fate have never tipped in my favor.

You'd think years of running and fear would overwhelm me when the monster hunting me makes his move. You'd think I'd lose hope when he rips me away from my mates and the first taste of safety I've had in years.

But Malcolm should know better than anyone that dragons don't break…

We get revenge.

And mine is so fiery and epic that the whole world gets a front-row seat. In escaping one predator, I've created thousands more as dragons and shifters are revealed to the world, and the revelation makes my mates even more determined to do whatever it takes to keep me safe.

Raiden, Stone, and Kodiak are dangerous, but so is the rest of the world. And unlike them, it doesn't know the meaning of the word mercy.

With humans and shifters alike calling for our blood, I don't know if I'll ever find the peace I crave...

Not when the scales of Fate have tipped toward destruction.

This is a darker themed paranormal romance where the heroine loves all of her men, and contains some graphic details and darker topics, so please read the note in the beginning of the book before choosing to read. It's the last of a three book series that follows the same characters. It's set in the same universe as my Thrown to the Wolves series, and takes place at nearly the same time frame. While it can be read independently, you might enjoy the character crossovers and references more if you begin with that series -again, NOT necessary to enjoy this one, though.

While I mostly enjoyed the series, there were still issues with that messed with my enjoyment.

The world-building wasn’t well done The world had already been established in the previous series, Pack Promised, but there was almost no world-building in this one.

There were unanswered questions and loose threads at the end. What is this council that was suddenly created? What do they do? Does it replace the dragon legion? Does that mean the Garrisons no longer have any leadership role? I’m really confused about the ending regarding the competition, the council, and everything—it felt like a last-minute, thrown-together mess.

Regarding Avery/Emilia: Avery mentions her best friend Viktor, and Amara (FMC) thinks the name sounds familiar. Viktor was referenced earlier in relation to one of the wolf shifter packs, where it was mentioned he was out on a personal mission. What’s going to happen here? Emilia/Avery is a person again, and Viktor is still alive. Are we supposed to assume this sets up a new series, or is this just a forgotten thread?

I didn’t like how Amara spent the entire book convinced she had to remove her mate mark. It felt cruel to the guys and served no real purpose. That plotline didn’t work for me at all—her reasoning didn’t even make sense.

Still, the story was good enough, though I probably won’t read it again.

Well that took a turn to the unexpected. I really enjoyed how the author took Amara and her men in an unexpected direction. The character were well developed and the story was engaging. It had action and a good level of steam. Overall this was a good ending for the series.

I love when authors write a recap of the previous books in the latest release in the series.

The book picks up right where book 2 has left off. I love Amara so much. She doesn't break. She fights back, and she wants blood. Malcolm has underestimated her, and he's going to regret it. I'm so into that. He deserves everything that awaits him. Amara's guys too are amazing. Kodiak, Raiden and Stone grew with Amara. They learned more about being mates and the relationship has developed so much. They deserve their HEA. It might take them a while, but it will be worth all the troubles.

This series has been amazing. I am so in love with the characters and the world.

Amara is such a relatable FMC. She doesn't let her trauma stop her from living. She also doesn't hide it. I think that is part of why I love her so much. She accepts that she has little quirks that a regular person doesn't have and learns how to navigate life with the guys, despite all the trauma she has been through. From the first book, to this last book, Amara has grown by leaps and bounds. Seeing her overcome so much and learn that she can trust her guys and a select few has been amazing.

The guys... Oh boy... Raiden, Kodi, and Stone. Can we just take a minute to appreciate how awesome these guys are? Raiden finally gets somewhere in this last book. He lets go of some of the control and just lives more in the moment. We don't see him being so serious 24/7. He is absolutely gutted in the start. He feels utterly responsible for Amara being taken and is just furious with himself.
Kodi, oh my poor sweet metal dragon. Kodi is dealing with a lot of old trauma in this last book. He is so hard on himself. Watching his journey and hearing his story was gut-wrenching. I seriously just want to scoop him up and hold him. Yes, he is a big bad dragon, but oh my is he dealing with some serious abandonment issues.
Stone, loses it. I don't have any other way of putting it for the first bit. He lets the dragon take over and goes wild. No mercy, no care, just on a mission to find his mate. I love what he did during the trip home. I'm going to leave it there.

We have a lot happening in this last book. Amara is finally seeing that she isn't the weak link. The guys learn that she can protect herself to a degree, not that they want her to. We have a few things happen that were just like What?? I don't want to give anything away, but this is not the end of this world. We are going to see so much more and I am absolutely here for it. I love this world, I love this story, and I love this author.

J. Kearston wraps up the Dragon in the Wind series with the third book, Scales of Destruction. This book was explosive from the first page, then slowly evolved into an angsty romance.

Amara was taken but not beaten. She fought for her freedom and was pretty bad-a doing it. Sure she had emotional turmoil but she fought through it. What amazes me is that even after all she's been through she was worried about being the weak link and putting her mates in danger. Amara has obviously fallen hard for her trio and is willing to do anything for them.

Vengeance is theirs. Raiden, Stone, and Kodi show us why they rule over shifter kind. The guys lose their minds when they realized Amara had been taken. Before all we've seen was the guys' thoughtful, logical side, well in this one the guys are brutal and basically go on a murder spree. The guys were devastated and it broke my heart.

I thought I knew where the story was going but not even halfway through the book, everything changed. The story became more about Amara and the guys' relationships than anything else. The guys working on their relationship with each other as well as Amara. The guys reconnect, growing the bond between them and Amara, learning the boundaries, and working through their problems all the while danger dogs their steps. A lot has gone down and there are consequences to the guys' actions, things are going to change in the world

Scales of Destruction was a great ending to the series. I love the twist that J through at readers, taking the story in an unexpected direction. There were up and downs but Amara finally let herself believe that she could finally be happy and got her HEA. I enjoyed meeting a few new characters and at the last moment, Kearston threw a couple of revelations at readers. I mean... what?! I have a feeling that J might be giving readers more stories set in this world.

Amara’s journey comes to an end in this exciting and fast-paced conclusion that packs a punch. She awakens to find herself ripped away from her beloved mates and held captive by her demented tormenter, Malcolm. Amara is no stranger to being held captive and fighting for her freedom as she has a traumatic past. All she craves is a peaceful life she can share with her mates. She’s just going to have to continue fighting like hell to reach the final destination in her story.

Amara has never been a weak or whiny heroine despite her past trauma. She’s strong, independent, and doesn’t rely on her mates to rescue her when she’s in danger. I love that she never wallowed in self-pity. I really felt all of Amara’s emotions as the author did a great job detailing her journey.

Stone, Kodiak, and Raiden all continue to grow in this final chapter. Their bond with Amara is stronger and there is a lot of personal growth. They get some much needed time to connect and enjoy being with each other. This trilogy burns faster with more action, danger, twists, revelations, steamy moments, and perfectly timed humor.

This is the end of Amara, Stone, Kodiak, and Raiden as the main harem in the storyline but there is definitely potential to see them again in future series in this same shared world. They fought hard for their happily-ever-after and I am so glad they got there!

Tropes: Paranormal romance, fantasy romance, fated mates, tortured heroine, reverse harem, dragon shifters, happily-ever-after

I love that we get a recap of what's been going on ready to delve into the final book of this trilogy. This is my new favourite thing with series and I wished more authors would follow.
So we start book 3 straight after the cliffhanger of book 2.

Amara is a different person since the last time Malcolm managed to get to her. She is more resourceful and stronger. She doesn't wait for anyone to rescue her, she's determined to help herself. The encounter does allow her to connect with her inner dragon though.

The guys go a little nuts over Amera's disappearance and it leads to a ton of other problems for the shifter community in general. But they come up with an interesting way of dealing with the changes.

There is quite a revelation regarding Avery, which I did not see coming.

What I love about this book is that it's mostly about Amara and the guys, as they spend time together without any outside influences, they really get to know each other. They have some crazy moments but manage to bond, laugh and enjoy each other's company. I've gone through loads of emotions reading this book and the series but my favourite parts will always be the snarky lines and humour that are mixed into the story.

This book does tie up the relationship between Amara, Stone, Kodi and Raiden but it's more of a HFN and definitely leaves the door open for more books in the series, especially with all the amazing characters we've met along the way,

"Dragons are the creatures that even other monsters fear."

The final book takes off right where we ended last. Amara awakes to her ultimate nightmare. Stuck in the clutches with Malcom again, hoping her guys come to her rescue. And after an agonizing week long in her own sort of torture, she realizes she needs to save herself more than anything.

Stone, Kodiak, and Raiden are besides themselves. How can they continue on when they cant even protect their own mate? This book wraps everything up and introduces us to more. The guys realize change needs to come sooner and later and Amara is the key to helping them all succeed.

"People suck. Life sucks. But if we're lucky enough to find it, somewhere amidst it all is something great. Something worth fighting for."

They all come to terms that nothing is forever. They need to make the most of what they have now and live everyday like it might be their last. This book gave us some twists I didn't expect and I definitely need more. The author wrapped up the series perfectly and I cant wait to read about more of these characters that were introduced along the way. I almost am not ready to say goodbye to Amara and her guys. I hope to see more of them.

*Overall 4.5/5
*Series overall 5/5

The story picks up immediately after the last book and the peril that Amara is in, and it’s certainly not somewhere she ever wanted to be!
I really like that it’s actually Amara who saves herself from the situation, with a little help from our favourite bird 😃 she also finds her own inner beast 🐉 rather than being saved by the boys, and when they do get to her - yeah it’s not all plain sailing! They have a lot of grovelling to do 😬
Their journey back to Khalida certainly sees their personal growth and for Stone, Raiden and Kodi then begin to get back to the brothers they originally were 😄
Once back in Khalida that was where the story lost me a little bit…like I wasn’t exactly sure how the competition was supposed to help with the humans knowing of shifters,, I totally got the whole dealing with other shifters but, but for the humans it didn’t feel quite as fleshed out/explained to me. Or who those attackers were and their purpose other than Avery🙈 - interesting storyline coming up there!
Overall though a good ending for Amara and her dragons - they get their well fought HEA.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of "SCALES OF DESTRUCTION" OMG!!! This story blew me away the conclusion was epic tho this amazing Trilogy I was hooked from the start so much suspense, intrigue, kidnapping, danger, secrets are revealed, twists you didn't see coming a page turner to the end.
Amara has been running for years overwhelmed by the monster hunting her Malcolm her tormentor wisks her away from her mates Stone, Kodiac & Raiden she thought she finally had some semblance of safety.
Raiden, Stone & Kodiac lose it when Amara is taken their dangerous showing no mercy, Dragons & Shifters are revealed to the world, they'll do anything & everything to protect her & keep her safe.
I definitely recommend to get this excellent conclusion Amara realizes she isn't the weak link between Kodiac, Stone & Raiden that she can protect herself somewhat, things happen you didn't see coming, some new characters as well, will they all get a HEA.
There will be consequences to what the guys did when Amara was taken, their out their out there now things will change in their world making for more stories to come.
PHENOMINAL MIND-BLOWING ENDING TO THIS AMAZING ADVENTURE 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

Scales of Destruction is a fitting finale to J. Kearston's Dragons in the Wind trilogy. It picks up right where book 2, Shred of Darkness, left off, and takes you on an adventure so wild that your head will spin. I love the brief recap at the beginning of the book. It really helped me get back to the story quickly, since I had to wait for book 3 to come out.

The storyline is fast-paced and very well written, filled with dragons, shape shifters of all kinds, kidnapping, murder, danger, adventure, intrigue, subterfuge, politics, romance and hot sex. Amara's tale is one of tragedy, perseverance and personal growth. The same could be said for each of her men. Together, they achieve what would not be possible individually--a truly fulfilling life, full of love, goals and acceptance.

The characters are well developed and engaging. I enjoyed both having familiar faces, and meeting new players. Avery especially stole my heart. I can definitely see the potential for some characters to make their way into a new series.

Overall, Scales of Destruction is a wonderful ending to a fantastic series. Definitely worth the read, particularly if you are fond of dragon shifters.

“Dragons are the creatures that even other monsters fear."

Book 3 - Scales of Destruction, wraps up the story of Amara a dragon that could not shift, her decade
of running from Malcolm her tormentor, who tried to use and control her. Amara learning to have trust, faith and strength in herself, with her 3 mates, Raiden, Stone, Kodiak, and Raiden's sister Carina. The story shows how one that has been put down and abused, can recovery and look outside her own pain to the care of others, even to help to improve a system to give other Shifters a haven in the city of Khalida. And in those steps Amara not only saved herself but her mates. You really need to read books 1 and 2 in the series, to see how Amara grows with each challenge, how she over comes each obstetrical, with unconditional love of her 3 mates and her refusal to give up, and becomes in book 3, what she was always born to be. I was sorry when the story ended, yet I so enjoyed how each character worked together to form a cohesive family. I could not imagine the story without any of the characters even the villains. I am looking forward to reading more stories by this author.

Amara's worst nightmare has finally happened. Malcolm has finally gotten his hands on her and kidnapped her away from her guys, but time has changed them both and Amara is not the same young woman that escaped him all those years ago.

With Amara being who-knows-where with the worst person imaginable the guys live up to the book's name and go on a literal path of destruction - destroying everyone and everything in the way of their goal of finding their mate. Amara is no damsel though and is trying to navigate the psychological minefield that is her ex to find her own means of escape. I enjoyed the relationships more this book - they felt more well rounded, and getting to see their family unexpectantly grow.

The book was an excellent conclusion to Amara's story. Usually the last book ends with a big lead up to a huge showdown with the villain and the group finally able to relax and enjoy their lives together. This book played a bit differently and I really liked it because we got a more realistic view of what might happen after everything hits the fan and that the aftermath isn't always tied up in a neat little bow.

"Dragons in the Wind" is one of the very few series where I like each new book a little more than the previous one. It's as if I'm slowly embracing these characters more, getting more invested in their story with every new chapter that I'm reading. So I can honestly say I really enjoyed this final book in Amara's story, and it introduces so many potential characters for another series I can't wait to dive into this world again!

"Scales of Destruction" picks up right where the second book in the series ended, and I was quite happy with the quick recap the author wrote at the start. It absolutely helped me to dive back into the storyline from the very first word, and to enjoy it fully. I loved to see Amara grow to her full potential, and the dynamic she has formed with some of the other shifter women. It's rare that a final book in the series can still come up with some unexpected twists and turns, but the author definitely managed to do that and leave a lot of room open for future series within this world. I'm already looking forward to it!

I love this series and one of the things I love about this series is that the author puts a recap at the start as to what happened in the previous book! I honestly think more authors should do this.

“She’s just… everything. Everything I’ve always hoped to find, and everything I need. After centuries of searching, I’ve barely had any time with her, and have already come far too close to losing her several times. “

This book is the third and final book and it starts off from where book two left off, Malcolm has captured her and is completely deluded, Amara is scared but when she’s been their a week with no sign of the guys only Avery she realises she has to save herself and she does just that it’s amazing, she finally finds herself and is no longer the scared girl she once was. When she finally sees the guys, they feel awful and she does make them grovel abit! For destroying Malcolm a lot of his followers are after them.
And we get a HUGE shock towards the end, like was anyone expecting that?!
The ending was great though I’m so happy they all got a HEA! Loved it!

Scales of Destruction is the third and final book in J. Kearston’s Dragons in the Wind series. The author does readers a service by giving us a recap of where things left off with Shred of Darkness. It’s great to get a recap so that it provides a nice refresher for the story thus far. You know – Amara kidnapped right from under the guys' noses by Malcolm (dude! This guy is resourceful!). So, she’s back being a prisoner. Again. Funny thing though – Malcolm may be crazy, but you gotta give the guy some credit. He PLANS! Not infallible, but he takes steps to be...different.
This author packs this book with many surprises. Some I wasn't a huge fan of because I was expecting it to be the main continuing theme of the story, but the author has other plans not just for the characters, but us readers as well. While I wasn't too keen on it at first, I became like...okay, I see where this is going. Was I always a fan of said paths? Not really, but just hang in there and things stay interesting regardless. LOL!

Feels like forever since the last book was out. A bonus is that this book gives you a recap on what has happened so far. It was a great recap because now I remember exactly what has happened. Without having to read the first two books again. When Amara is ripped away from her mates by her tormentor Malcom, he gets more than he bargained for as dragons don’t break. They get revenge. Amaras was epic that the whole world got a front row seat to it. While she escaped one predator, she has created so many more as the shifters and dragons have been revealed to the rest of the world. But now with the shifter and humans out for their blood Amara doesn’t know if she will ever get the peace she has craved. This book is no different from the other 2 in this series it was another epic read and took you on a whirlwind of a journey. I loved this series from start to finish. The way the series finished was fantastic and I can’t wait to read more of this author.

The third and final book in the series. We have seen Amara make such a huge change from the first book we saw her in where she was just running scared and trying to survive. She didn’t trust anyone and had no interest in finding her mates. In this book we finally see her as a strong underpants person and fully trusting her three dragons Stone, Kodi and Raiden as well as Corina and a few others. It was a great story and amazing to see her grow. It was great to see how she dealt with Malcom and was just satisfying to me to read. I also loved that little twist at the end with one of the main characters. I so wasn’t expecting that. No spoilers but it was a fun addition and I absolutely enjoyed it. Go give the series a try. It’s a great book and I loved the author didn’t just smooth over Amaras traumas like they just disappeared. She had to work to be better and really learn to trust and she still wasn’t perfect but her guys worked to help and support her in working though it.

This book was amazing and kicks straight off the cliff of book 2 (with a lovely little re-cap to get you re-engaged). Malcolm (who I all King Delusion) once again has Amara, however this time she is more resourceful and sets about trying to free herself - a complete contrast from where we start the series!

There were quite a few shocks in this one (regarding Avery particularly) that I didn't see coming, giving the series a fresh feel. I look at the whole series with new eyes after finishing it and can't wait to re-read to see if I can find any hints!

There are so many sub-plots that are central to the story - revelation of shifters and dragons, but by far my favourite is the brief glimpses you get to see of Carina and her harem!

The development of our FMC and her guys across the series culminates into one final book and the HEA feels well deserved (they worked hard for it, bless them).

This series! Oh wow I have loved reading this series so much! Amara , Stone, Raiden and Kodiak have become some of my favourite characters! Amara has such an inner strength that the authour conveyed really well. Her trauma, her growth, her raw, honest emotions. Ugh I just loved the way the authour expressed these things. J Kearston writes in a way that I really connect to and I just can’t get enough! The guys too! Their personalities, their personal growth throughout this last book, all of it laid out so well. This is such a phenomenal series, The plot hooked me in the first book, and I have been invested since! This is well paced, the story and characters are solid, and it flows well, making it really easy to read. this last book treats us to plenty of drama and so many emotions! action and steam and a very satisfying conclusion to Amara and her men’s story. I have enjoyed this amazing well developed world the authour has created and I hope we get to see more of it!

The third and last book of the series. But it is part of a crossover world so there are plenty more stories to come and we just may see Amara and her men again.

The previous book left us in a big cliffhanger. This one takes off right after it. So expect from the start a lot of action and danger. But with Amara you can always expect danger to be not far behind. She and some of the other characters have grown emotionally in this one. She isn’t the scared human anymore and she will have to relearn what she is. The humans of the world just may have an eye opener as well. The story does bring a conclusion to several dangers as well as some we didn’t even realize. It is filled with danger but also those men will do anything for her so the romance never stops. And of course things do heat up frequently.

Scales of Destruction, the third book in Dragons in the Wind series by J. Kearston is everything I needed it to be and more as Kearston knocked this one out of the park! I have loved this story and these characters from the very beginning and this one definitely did not disappoint.

Amara and her guys (Stone, Kodi, and Raiden) have had quite the story, and while I’m sad to see their journey end—it was well worth the wait and I love how beautifully Kearston wrapped it all up for us after all the build up and anticipation we’ve had throughout the last two books. Seeing Amara finally come into her own and become the fierce BA we all knew she was capable of was utter perfection!

If you love a RH shifter with a unique take on dynamic, and tons of steamy goodness, nonstop action and of course fabulous world building that Kearston is a queen at doing then this is the one for you!

Amara is a strong FMC that has been through hell but finding her own true self. After Malcolm took her in the last book, we begin where the at book ended and see how Amara has changed from the past to now. Her past experience with Malcolm makes her ready on how to defeat him this time. Her courage becomes stronger throughout and she is a force to be reckoned with.

Raiden, Kodiak and Stone do everything in their power to make Amara see how they all fit together. When they discover her gone and show themselves to everyone, the cat is out of the bag and shifters all over want them dead. But making sure Amara is safe is their top priority. Showing their love for her and how they are her home is what they do best.

Loved these books and loved seeing how the characters grow in each of them, especially Amara.

A spoiler-free basic review for the whole series:

This series was much better than the Thrown to The Wolves series, which to be honest isn’t with reading in my opinion and you certainly don’t have to read it to read these books. My understanding is that Thrown to the Wolves occurred before this series and those characters then interacted at least somewhat with the characters in this one, but there is no mention of that in this series.

I think that is a missed opportunity and that if things had been tweaked that this series could have easily been 4 books that didn’t drag out like Thrown to The Wolves did. Over all I liked the characters, the side characters were awesome, and I think these are definitely worth the read. I hope all the side characters get their own books, there was a lot of potential!

The Dragons in the Wind series has been one emotional roller coaster after another! The third book Scales of Destruction gives us the nail biting conclusion to this series as Amara is back to being a captive by Malcolm. But Amara is not one to back down especially now with all that she has learned and grown into. Knowing her men are going to fight with her too, she will use all of that strength and will to fight for her well deserved HEA. There was obviously a lot of action and suspense, but also some wholesome, funny and steamy moments between Amara and her men. This book was well rounded and truly brought Amara's story to a wonderful close. Being that this is in a shared universe, I do hope we get to see these characters again.

Kearston ended her stalker vibes slow burn with quite a bang. Amara has come a long way from the terrified, touch-phobic, mate-adverse woman we met in book one. Kodiak, Raiden, and Stone begin this last chapter of the series on a frantic hunt for the kidnapped Amara, and it begins a high action ending that will lead you on the fun twists and turns this story has been leading up to as a grand conclusion. Amara's story has really ben characterized, perhaps overshadowed by her constant fear, and Kearston was fantastic at finally letting us see that fear wasn't unwarranted. Amara's awakening as a true dragon, and her relationship with her three men was a slow unfolding, but one worth all it's weight in cold here with Scales of Destruction.

Amara's story is concluded in Scales of Destruction And what an end.
Abducted for the second time by her tormentor and stalker, this book starts out with an action-filled bang!
Her mates, Stone, Raiden, and Kodiak, are going rampant in their search for her, while she finds a tiny shed of hope in the company of Raiden's bird, Avery (who is also taken prisoner by Malcolm. And this is just the start!
The story hooked me from the first page and all the way through. If it hadn't been for the need to adult, I would have read this in one sitting. I adored how Avery shifted her loyalty. Oh, dear Avery! You don't want to miss out on this!
Hi highly recommend this to anyone in love with dragons and romance.

Amara has to do anything to survive until her men can rescue her or until she can find away out herself as she is back in the arms of living hell. Trying to survive Malcom what ever it takes.
Meanwhile her men are literally tearing the world apart trying to find her.

There are so many twists and turns and some surprises along the way.

Brilliant storey and i have loved every moment of these 3 books - the storey has been so well told and the ending wraps everything up so well.

This storey and series has so much love and really shows the journey well of an abused woman finding herself and healing with her true mates, found family, and some amazing side characters. A rea;;y enjoyable read.

Great series

I think this series was pretty great mostly. I think it would've been just a bit better if there was a little more focus on mental health. It was like Amara just kinda accepted she's got a shitty past and moved onto happiness. I'm sure there could've been a mention of her visiting therapists at the rehab center for abused mates. Also, the abrupt ending before the epilogue was a little weird. Like there was no real follow-up to the glaring issue of any human becoming a shifter if anyone strong enough felt like turning them. It's almost like another mini-plot was abandoned right at the introduction of it. Overall, it was well-written, I just think these two things could've made it better.

Just Amazing!!! The story continues where the second book left off and let me tell you this one definitely packed a punch. We see Amara greatly growing in this one. We see the guys growing as well. The chemistry between them is off the charts and definitely felt throughout the story. Amara goes through a lot in this one as do the guys. We have so much drama and suspense throughout it. I was pulled in and couldn’t put it down. I absolutely had to find out how it ends. I am so glad to have read this series as it definitely is a must read. There are surprises that really shock you. A perfect ending to an amazing story.
