This book provides a basic introduction to systemic-functional linguistics in the context of English. It presents the principles of a Hallidayan approach to language studies and introduces, in an explanatory way, a set of techniques for the grammatical analysis of English.
As well as a fiction writer by profession I'm an English teacher. At the moment I'm currently studying for an MSc in Applied Linguistics and this is one of the core texts. Covering pretty much everything you need to know about what is known as System Functional Linguistics, this is a pretty handy read for Linguistics students and pretty meaningless for everyone else. Certainly not bedtime reading!
One of just a few linguistics books I have read from cover to cover. Bloor and Bloor do a fine job in making Halliday's 'Introduction to Functional Grammar' more accessible, particularly to langauge teachers.
Neatly structured and reader friendly, it is a very helpful linguistic book that deviates from the almost norm of jargonese linguistic textbooks, offering a more comprehensive approach to the Functional Analysis of the language. Worth reading it, especially if you happen to be a student of the English language.
A good, basic introduction to functional analysis and helped me when I studied grammar on my university course. Not my most read textbook, but it was useful as an introduction and has stayed with me for later reference.
