The World of Charles Dickens: The Life, Times and Works of the Great Victorian Novelist
Two centuries after his birth, Charles Dickens remains a beloved author whose works seem timeless--yet if ever a man was the product of his times, it was he. The virtues and vices of the Victorian Age Dickens so memorably set forth mirrored his own life, from his poverty-stricken childhood to his dizzying rise to fame. In The World of Charles Dickens , eminent scholar Martin Fido traces that complex and fascinating history in all its drama, tragedy, and triumph.

Concise, clear, well organised and beautifully illustrated. Time (and money) well spent. Recommended.

This book was written in celebration of Dickens' bicentenary. It is composed of six chapters with subheadings/topics of precisely two pages. This makes for great readability. Chapters two and six are of particular interest. Chapter two, "The Popular Writer," deals with the subjects Dickens wrote about from madmen, to childhood, to ghosts. Chapter six, "The Immortal Reputation," ranges from scandals to his lasting notoriety through stage and screen. Numerous photos and drawings add interest.

I did not make it all the way to the end. It was too much for me. It is written as if I know every detail of every Dicken's story ever written and I do not.
