Following the Treaty of Guadalupe that ended the war with Mexico in 1848, more than a century of persecution against people of Mexican origin was enacted in the United States. Mexicans living in the United States were given the option of becoming American citizens or being exiled to Mexico. Legal owners of ranches, mines and businesses who had not gone to Mexico had their property confiscated, often by brutal force. This is the story of Diego and how the loss of El Ranch Jalisco converted him into the most feared gunman in New Mexico.
