Something is wrong— horribly wrong—in the deep woods of Oregon. People age at accelerated rates, then disappear. Hundreds of disappearances have occurred in the area for decades—a veritable Bermuda Triangle on land. Even the authorities sent in to investigate the disappearances have gone missing. After that, the government stepped in and fenced off the entire area.
But when a group of four strangers miss their train and wander onto the site searching for shelter, they discover what was left behind. After one of their four goes missing, they decide to leave the area. Something’s toying with them, something ancient and malicious, and it doesn’t want them to leave. It’s wise enough to understand them and powerful enough to control them. It’s also hungry, and it needs to be satiated.

The book starts off on the edge of a cliff (figuratively). I felt alarmed and intrigued wanting to know what was going on. It was unusual and eerie. Then as the story progresses and more information is revealed, I didn't get any calmer. I kept turning the pages, needing to know, praying for salvation. It didn't come for a long time and when it did, it was short lived. The madness of man, the greed and the insanity of it, along with the dark force pushing it's way into the hearts and souls of those who ventured near, left everything good behind. It wasn't a happy ending and I will not be making treks in the Oregon wilderness anytime soon.
A 4.5, actually. Well, I won't be sleeping much tonight! It is a very dark, creepy, suspenseful psychological horror story. Evil. There are multiple points of view's told over a three day span. The plot was original, and I felt the story flowed well. This is my first book from this author, and I look forward to reading more from them.
I don't typically reread thrillers, but this is one that i will be rereading again and again. Jonas Saul pulls you in from the first page. The woods, that normally seem peaceful and serene have become menacing and deadly.
“The Woman in the Woods” by Jonas Saul is a dark, eerie, and suspenseful read that pulls you in from the very first page. The atmosphere is chilling, the twists keep coming, and the sense of dread never lets up. A gripping thriller that fans of psychological suspense will devour.
