What does it mean to be a woman? The current cultural ideal for womanhood encourages women to be strident, sexual, self-centered, independent -- and above all -- powerful and in control. But sadly, this model of womanhood hasn't delivered the happiness and fulfillment it promised. The Bible teaches that it's not up to us to decide what womanhood is all about. God created male and female for a very specific purpose. His design isn't arbitrary or unimportant. It is very intentional and He wants women to discover, embrace, and delight in the beauty of His design. He's looking for True Women!
Bible teachers Mary A. Kassian and Nancy Leigh DeMoss share the key fundamentals of biblical womanhood in this eight week study. Each week includes five daily individual lessons leading to a group time of sharing and digging deeper into God's Word. And to enhance this time of learning together, on-line videos are available featuring Mary and Nancy as they encourage women to discover and embrace God's design and mission for their lives. A True Woman Book The goal of the True Woman publishing line is to encourage women
Mary Kassian is an award winning author, popular speaker, and a distinguished professor of women’s studies at Southern Baptist Seminary. She has published several books, Bible studies and videos, including: Girls Gone Wise, In My Father’s House: Finding Your Heart’s True Home, Conversation Peace, Vertically Inclined, and the Feminist Mistake.
Mary graduated from the faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine from the University of Alberta, Canada and has studied systematic theology at the doctoral level. She has taught courses at seminaries across North America She is a popular conference speaker and has ministered to women’s groups internationally. Mary has appeared on numerous radio and television shows, including Focus on the Family, Family Life Today, and Marriage Uncensored.
Mary was born and raised in Edmonton, Canada. She and her husband, Brent, have three adult sons and one daughter-in-law. Mary has mastered the art of cheering after spending countless hours in rinks, arenas, and gyms: her husband is chaplain for a professional football team, her two older sons play ice hockey, and her youngest, volleyball. The Kassians enjoy biking, hiking, snorkeling (when they can find some warm water!), music, board games, mountains, campfires, and their family pets: Miss Kitty and black lab, General Beau.
This book was overall, horrible. Any good information was over ridden by the blaring sexist comments.
These authors glorify the 50s without actually saying they want that back.
I gave this book a shot because my mentor recommended it, but overall it was horrible and did nothing but frustrate me. Every single day Mary and Nancy started off with a rant about how horrible the Feminist movement is .. meanwhile, the Feminist movement is the only reason they have a platform and can write a book. They didn't even bother to identify the positive aspects of Feminism.
My favorite part was where they said women are just too emotional and NEED men ... and the example with the vacuum cleaner was my favorite.. because it was the definition of ridiculous.
Also, their improper use of the word "egalitarian" bothered me .. don't throw in big words if you don't know the meaning.
I wanted to like this book, I did. But it was a colossal disappointment.
Am I a Christian? Yes. Am I a Feminist? Yes. Do the both go hand in hand? YES. Because both strive for EQUALITY.
As a twenty-something with a heart for girls ministry - I’m always on the hunt for something interesting, relevant and capable of deepening my girls' understanding of God and Scripture. Based on these criteria, I would highly recommend this study.
Pros: -Clear explanation of the differences between manhood & womanhood (while not falling into stereotypes) -Excellent parallels of how a marriage between a man and a woman reflects Christ and the church -Addresses the common (yet often unspoken) feeling that God loves women less -Good balance of addressing those who are married and also girls who are single. Since I disciple high school girls, this was really important for me. -Week five was very insightful as they addressed how sin affects us differently based on gender. -Created opportunities for meaningful discussion (Ex. I used this icebreaker alongside the study one week & it worked great - https://disciplinggirls.com/2016/07/0...)
Cons: -The online sessions are mediocre. I taught tidbits that I liked in them, but never showed them in group. The content in the videos especially doesn’t translate well to high school girls. -There is a LOT of content & I was concerned my girls would get overwhelmed by information and absorb little. For this reason, I taught from outlines I created each week to highlight points I wanted them to remember.
The Bottom Line: Divine Design ranks in the top five books I currently recommend for high school girls. It will challenge those who have grown up in church their whole lives and give them information to wrestle with so they can figure out what they believe Scripture teaches. It was very rewarding as a leader as my girls made comments like “I never thought of that before!"
This book study is nicely put together with lots of interactive prompts and exercises that make you think about what you're reading and how it applies to you. The questions at the end of each week's lesson definitely prompted a lot of good conversations. This study would probably be especially good for Christian women who are new to the faith and have questions / doubts about the role God wants them to play. It can be easy to wrongly interpret scripture's teachings on this subject when viewed through the lens of our modern feminist culture. This book helps debunk the lies we've been conditioned to believe about biblical womanhood - lies coming from both the progressive feminist left and the ultra-conservative traditional right. Contrary to popular opinions, God does not view women as inferior to men; he did not create us merely to fulfill their selfish desires; he does not expect us to be weak pushovers and doormats; and biblical womanhood is not defined by living out a checklist of behaviors stereotypically associated with conservative Christian women (think docile, airheaded housewives in ankle length skirts with a bundle of kids, drudging away at home with no outside aspirations). This book explains how and why God created the two sexes, the different roles he designed us to fulfill, and how it all works together to magnify his beautiful redemption plan. Although I'm not new to Christianity, this study provided a good review of what I believe regarding biblical womanhood and helped deepen my understanding of some of the scripture's teachings that I didn't fully grasp. Enjoyable book study. I only watched a couple of the accompanying videos, but I did enjoy them as well.
An eight-week Bible study, True Woman 101: Divine Design helps women recapture the idea of biblical womanhood. Authors Mary Kassian and Nancy Leigh DeMoss show readers how feminism actually degrades women instead of elevating them as does God’s original design. True Woman 101 challenges women to affirm God’s original design and to live as true women of God.
Many women will find the premise of the book to be challenging as it’s so countercultural: God created manhood and womanhood to glorify Himself and to put the gospel of Jesus Christ on display. So, the authors say, “gender does matter.” In True Woman 101 Kassian and DeMoss lead readers on a biblical journey, showing how God’s original design for male and female was perfect, and how Satan tempted the first woman to reject God’s design. Since Adam and Eve sinned and rejected God’s original design, sin has damaged manhood and womanhood. The authors encourage readers to recapture and embrace God’s divine design, and in so doing, experience a “dramatic makeover from the inside out” that will transform their “womanhood into a thing of beauty.”
I found the authors’ tone to be conversational, personal, and inviting. The authors are passionate about the topic, and yet they temper that passion with loads of references to God’s Word. The authors make sure that you know these are not just their own ideas, but they are rooted in God’s Word. Additionally, the authors don’t just spoon-feed the reader. They ask questions. They require readers to dig into God’s Word for answers. They lead readers to discover truth from God’s Word for themselves, and to me, that’s a key part of being a Bible teacher—teaching students to study the Bible for themselves instead of relying on the knowledge of others.
Equally helpful are the discussion questions provided at the end of each week’s lessons. The questions require careful thought and consideration, and they are perfect for either individual or small group study. So many books provide great information. But without internalizing it and making it your own, it’s just knowledge. With the “Personalize” section at the end of each week, Kassian and DeMoss push readers to synthesize what they’ve learned, to respond to what they’ve studied, and to find ways to apply it to their lives. I think this is one of the most helpful parts of the Bible study because readers take head knowledge and turn it into heart knowledge.
I highly recommend this study to woman of all ages. It’s great for small groups, book clubs, moms groups, mentoring relationships, and even moms and daughters (although there’s a counterpart for teens called Becoming God’s True Woman. . .While I Still Have a Curfew, which I also highly recommend). True Woman 101 would also make a great individual Bible study. For any woman desiring to truly follow Jesus and live out God’s Word, True Woman 101 is a call to return to God’s design and is guaranteed to turn your life upside down as you experience transformation and freedom in Christ through God’s divine design.
One of the great things about this study is that the accompanying videos are available for free at www.truewoman101.com. In a world where even Christian publishers try to increase profits by charging for every single resource, I find it refreshing that Kassian, DeMoss, and Moody Publishers are so committed to the message of True Woman 101 that they have made the videos and other resources available at no cost. Bravo and thank you!

I did this Bible study with my mom this semester and I’m not sure if I have the words to describe how impactful it has been towards my perspective of biblical womanhood. This study consistently reminded me of God’s intentional design with creating women and how they are different from men for a specific & divine purpose that is equally as God-honoring, while also debunking many myths that modern day extreme feminism preaches. For any Christian woman out there, do! this! study! Praise God we can walk in God-given confidence of our womanhood through what His Word says, rather than what this world says!
This goes on for way too long and the amount of cognitive dissonance and projection is staggering.
The book ends with what feels like a pitch for a multi level marketing scam which is a little bit wild.
Also Christianity is the most prevalent religion in the US and nothing in this book is in any way "countercultural" and it's weird that fundamentalist think that's a thing that they are
“As Christian women, we desire to honor God by living countercultural lives that reflect the beauty of Christ and His gospel to our world . . .”
These powerful words lifted from the True Woman Manifesto are a wake up call to women, an invitation to enter into a life based on truth, and to view womanhood as a glorious gift that puts the creativity and wisdom of God on display.
In True Woman 101: Divine Design, Mary Kassian and Nancy Leigh DeMoss (now Wolgemuth), share their own very unique stories of following God into ministry — Mary as a wife and mother, Nancy as a single woman at the time of the book’s publication. Certainly, marital status is no barrier to active and meaningful ministry.
While many in the church waste valuable time quibbling over what women should do or may do, the word of God is clear in its teaching that, although marred by the fall, the role of a godly woman is to exhibit wholehearted devotion to Christ, to display purity of heart and a quiet spirit in her use of the unique ministry gifts that God has granted.
When Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as the Helper, he forever exalted the role of those who come alongside to assist. This is a powerful message for women who want their homes to be launching pads for the next generation of world-changers, for women who are called to meet the needs of others outside their family circle, and for women of all ages and of all giftings who desire to be intentional and purposeful in living a countercultural life that puts others first.
The words of Elisabeth Elliot are a magnificent mission statement:
“We are called to be women. The fact that I am a woman does not make me a different kind of Christian, but the fact that I am a Christian does make me a different kind of woman. For I have accepted God’s idea of me, and my whole life is an offering back to Him of all that I am and all that He wants me to be.”
True Woman 101 is an eight-week study that serves as an invitation to throw away the cookie cutters and delight in the differences between men and women as well as the differences among women of diverse temperaments, at various stages in life, and with different callings. We live our lives before God “to the end that Christ may be exalted and the glory and redeeming love of God may be displayed throughout the whole earth.”

Thousands are tossing the world’s brand of womanhood and joining a quiet counter-Revolution. Find out why.
If you are a ministry leader and looking for a good Bible Study this is it! I was impressed the second I saw it, from the cover design, to the bright and colorful inside. It is well a well written study aimed at women, to teach them about Biblical womanhood. I will be using this study personally as well as in my own ministries.
I don't think you will be disappointed with this one!
I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own. Womanhood is not what it once was, I think we all know that! God designed womanhood to be wonderful, but sin has marred what true womanhood is all about. Throughout history people have tried to change God’s design for us. Feminism has taken hold and warped our view of true womanhood. This 8-week study will teach you what God’s original design was, and what His plans for us were. This study will show you that God’s design is beautiful, and not something we should want to change.
I learned so much through this study. After each weeks’ lesson, there is an accompanying video on the True Woman website where you can learn even more as the authors discuss the topics covered that week. I will say, although I read this study alone, it is designed to be more of a group study. I believe every woman should take this study and embrace God’s design of womanhood. Don’t fall into the world’s philosophy of feminism. When you decide to strive to be the woman God designed you to be, you will be so much happier. So go grab your book today!

I am really loving this book! True Woman leads readers on a biblical journey showing them God's original design-showing them His design was perfect. This is an eight-week bible study designed for individual or group use. Its focus is on delivering a solid concept for biblical womanhood. The authors tone was much like having a conversation with friends. They make sure you understand that the information in this book wasn't something they created, but was and is Gods original design for woman. Filled with scripture, sometimes written in the book, other times it's a verse you have to look up in your own bible; though there are a few times I kind of disagree with the interpretation of a verse. This study is very encouraging. This book is a wonderful start if you want to shift your focus to biblical womanhood. I definitely recommend this book for women of any age.
I received this book through the Publishers in exchange for an honest review. A positive review is not required or guaranteed, all opinions express are my own.
Went through this study a second time in 2024. It is amazing how much was so relevant to our current cultural atmosphere...it's also amazing how many outdated references there were.
This is an 8-week study on the very basic theology of creation, gender, and biblical womanhood. Most of the points made are fairly straightforward from Scripture; some points are extrapolated a little more obscurely.
This may be a difficult study for you if you are heavily influenced by feminism or by wokeism. However, if you're willing to have an open mind, you will certainly learn a lot.
My favorite part of this study is their affirmation that biblical womanhood will look different for every single woman. This is not a "8 easy steps to being a woman" or anything like that. It's full of basic principles on which to build (or adjust) your life.
One of the best Bible study/books I've read! Mary Kassian and Nancy Leigh Demoss (and their friends, if you watch the 8 videos that go along with the book) lead you through God's word as they study the basics of being a true woman. This isn't a book on the working mom vs stay-a-home mom vs babywearing vs breastfeeding vs public school debates. Instead, it pulls your focus way back to God.
I got this last night (Sept 5th) and we, Women's Grace Group are going through this for 8-months and not just in 8-weeks since we are meeting once a month. I know this will be a wonderful great book and lesson to learn from. So far, I love the first week Day 1 and have learn a lot. Great book and glad that we, Women's Grace Group (Christ Baptist Church's ladies) did this.
Awesome book! It re-energized my spirit. It was great to see God's intentional purpose for women, the liberating years, where our society is now and where God would have us teach the next generation. I highly recommend this study and am blessed with my sisters in Christ/prayer warriors that God placed in this small group.
Such a life changer for me! Enjoyed this bible study and revealed God's design for women that is divine! So thankful for the women that participated and shared in this study and for Sherrie Grizzard who lead it!!! We are starting a study Wed. Night at Crosspoint of Lies Women Believe. Please join us.
This is a great study. Nancy and Mary do not disappoint. If you are ready to really look at how and why God created women so wonderfully different than men, I would highly suggest this study. It is filled from cover to cover with Biblical truth, some of it difficult, depending on where you're coming from, but all of it worth learning.
If you can get past the sometimes cheesy approach of the authors of this study, this is an invaluable resource for living according to God's design. Biblically accurate and helpful for teaching others about what it means to be a woman of God. My only complaint is it can be overly cheesy and cliche. Otherwise, spot on.
there's nothing actually wrong in this book, that you can point at and go "this is an incorrect t interpretation of scripture". but it's like being starving and needing meat and butter and potatoes and being given a rice cake. there is so much more. also the writing and workbook format felt cheesy and even a little dumbed down.
I wound up not going past chapter one, since I was not in a group studying it, and I could tell I was going to want to talk about it. I do plan to get into a group in the future, as soon as I can, to study this book. I can tell it will be wonderful.
I went through this study with 2 different groups of women, young and old. I loved seeing the perspectives of the women. Mostly, I loved the Biblical perspective of womanhood. It makes the Bible the authority and not our culture. Very timely and applicable.
Excellent and timely study for today's "modern" woman looking to "have it all" and still finding herself left feeling empty. If you're searching for God's design in woman, you'll find it laid-out in this book!
