Captivating & Intriguing Historical Storytelling

I feel like I've just lived a few years through Cromwell's rule, from the intense distrust fomented even within families by the insecurity of a nation so awfully divided and judged daily by faith and politics, to the casual cruelty of grinding poverty and the disregard by many of those lives seen as lesser. Set among this charged and oft scheming background over six books, this is the tale of a man who has become hard by choice and circumstance, and his slow but sure path to redemption, a return to a sense of self and honour over the rigid rules he has come to rely on.

It is rare to find an author with such a gift for weaving the art of the story so seamlessly with the real lives and the authentic feel of those who walked the pages of history. These books are an absolute joy.

As I looked back, I wondered whether to give this series four or five stars. Then I concluded that if I read a series totaling about 2,000 pages without getting bored, it was a solid five.

The protagonist is fictional, as are the principal characters, but the others are historical. Oliver Cromwell, Charles II, Andrew Marvell, John Milton, and, most central, John Thurloe, who ran Cromwell's spy network in its efforts against the Royalists who wanted to reinstate Charles to the British throne after the execution of his father, Charles I.

A wonderful read with engaging characters and historical references. Initially thought the 1600+ pages would be daunting but once into the story I didn't want it to end.

Book 1 The Seeker. Excellent story, Historically accurate of the Period. Great characterization. I loved Samsone and this is almost as good.
