Phantoms, werewolves, and the walking dead populate this eerie history of New England that reveals some of the region’s darkest secrets—all of them true. Tales include the mystery hidden in a quiet Connecticut graveyard, a restless spirit of a murdered soldier roaming an abandoned Rhode Island fort, generations of a Yankee family cursed for more than three centuries, and a witch haunting the woods near a lost Massachusetts village. Each story is based on firsthand accounts or thoroughly documented lore and is complemented by New England history that gives context by describing the time and place. From haunted castles to ghost towns, this collection of spooky legends sheds new light on some of the strangest events and most mysterious locales of the Northeast.
A big thanks to the author for sending this book in exchange for an honest review!
As a child, I read dozens upon dozens of "true ghost story books", as was the name of that section in my school library. These books included the Haunted Ohio series, the true ghost story series by Allen Zullo, many books by Daniel Cohen, and a plethora of others. I was a ghost kid, through and through, so I would have loved to read Ghosts of New England by Christopher Rondina in those days.
I recently read Legends of Sleepy Hollow: The Lost History of the Headless Horseman and loved it, so I was very excited to read more of Rondina's work. Ghosts of New England did not disappoint. It was just a fun, quick, breezy autumnal read that gave me all those spooky feelings of reading true haunting books as a kid. There are some familiar tales here, as well as a few that I never heard before, including the "Cornell curse" that tied a few of the events together. Very interesting stuff.
I am taking a trip to New England next year, so I discovered about a handful of new places I'd like to visit from reading this book. Highly recommended!
Mr. Rondina delved deep into "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" for the one fact we sought for two hundred years. Who was the hapless Hessian soldier who lost his head? Our author was as unrelenting as the galloping goblin on his quest for the Legend's sources. This alone makes the book fascinating.
Loved this book! As someone who is not scared easily , I went to bed spooked at night. The author brings you back in time while reading and made me want to visit all the haunted places he writes about.
