Wild! is a really beastly book of poems about baby bugs and mini-beasts, the sea and its inhabitants, green things: endangered, extinct and ecological, reptiles and amphibians, amazing mammals and winged things—birds and creatures of the air. As an added bonus there are fact pages and mini quizzes about the creatures in the poems.
Wild! (rhymes that roar) is a humorous collection of poems, focused on a range of interesting wildlife.
The book is split into a series of categories: green things, winged things, minibeasts, wet n' wild and reptiles. In each category, there are poems by a variety of authors, pre-faced by an overview from the book's author, general facts and a short quiz.
As the book's title implies, in many of the poems there is an emphasis on onomatopoeia, which would make this book perfect for KS1 and KS2 pupils looking to practice their performance, reading skills. Another interesting feature, is the amount of Shape Poems included in this collection. This may provide an interesting, rhythmical challenge for children when reading aloud.
A personal highlight in this book, would be the poem, A Multiplication of One (M. Swinger). This alternate rhyming poem, cleverly depicts the origins of our planet from the tiniest of cells, to largest of earthly creatures while introducing some fantastic, scientific vocabulary.
