red flames burning out

Rate this book
"red flames burning out" is a new poetry chapbook by Juliet Cook, published by Grey Book Press, in April 2023/Poetry Month.

Approximately ten years after Grey Book Press published an earlier poetry chapbook by Juliet Cook, "Poisonous Beautyskull Lollipop", now she is part of the Grey Book Press poetry family again.

The new "red flames burning out" contains 20 different poems, ranging from several different years, including 6 "Internal Suffocation" poems.

According to Grey Book Press poet/editor/publisher Scott Sweeney:

"Our 2023 chapbook season kicks off with the return of Juliet Cook and red flames burning out. I welcome seeing manuscripts from old GBP friends come in during our open readings, and Juliet walked through the door with one of her most immediate and jarringly personal (sounding) collections. While many of the pieces fit comfortably in Juliet’s oeuvre of horror poetry, I found myself moved by the “Internal Suffocation” series and the last poem, “White Doldrums.” And I laughed my way through “My Bridal Meat Doll.” She keeps us guessing, even if her subjects are the ones that seem trapped and/or lost."

According to Juliet Cook (How does Juliet describe it?):

“Broken doll fingers bulging their way out of blubbering chicken wire. Losing parts of one’s self and growing new parts in the form of self-created nightmares, body and brain malfunctions, seizures and other divorces from parts of past reality. Pitching standard traditions in the trash, wrapped in drying blood. Creepy bird’s nests and fear of impending death, yet still continuing to create one’s own sizzling and burning red fire.”

You can find out a bit more about red flames burning out it via Grey Book Press's website.

You can purchase a copy for yourself or a friend (or both) via Grey Book Press too.

(Or you can contact Juliet to find out more and/or purchase a copy directly from her).

The chapbook currently costs $8 (which includes shipping, within the USA).

***

Demolished flesh that nobody wants to look at.
Least of all me.
Shaking around out of control,
groaning a low guttural moan
that dries into a hiss.

Acidic vomit drips
from a vulture's mouth. Clotted
saliva is mixed up with blood then rots.
The good parts get eaten up and shit out.

As a lover of darker poetry. Juliet soothes my soul, always reminding me that I'm not alone in this {bored} game of Life. I tip my Bridal Meat hat to the queen of confessional macabre. Juliet brings the raw side-show to town with every collection and lies bare on the tracks for our entertainment. (Doll) heads-up though, there are plenty cringy moments here for sure. But, only cringy as you realize the level of sheer vulnerability you're dealing with, and then you wonder if you're worthy to be reading all of this personal splatter of pure in-the-moment emotional truth bombs. Lots of deep breaths. It's intense.

My favorites are 'Dried Flowers and Spit Out Seeds', 'My Bridal Meat Doll', 'Chicken Corset' and 'Mangled is Still Alive'. Also, the cover artwork is so stunning. Another quality book from one of the most authentic poets out there.
