I honestly didn’t know exactly how to feel about this book right after I finished it. It left me feeling all sorts of different ways, confused and creeped-out being at the top of the list. The author had an excellent idea for this book. She took a bunch of teenagers who all have some sort of problems, whether it be greed, gluttony, pride, lust … even envy. You get it, right? The Seven Deadly Sins. She then put them in a scenario where each one is given a chance to either make the right decisions or the wrong decisions; the wrong choices leading to death. The person who oversees the decisions is an old man who owns a “hotel”, which is actually a sort of purgatory.
This is a book that will keep you turning the pages! I had to see what would happen to each person; would they make the right decision and be spared, or make the wrong one? I do have to admit that I was confused by the descriptions in the book a few times and also, the author does tend to repeat the same words, or variations of certain words, over and over. However, I did enjoy this book. :)
I won’t say that I got attached to any of the characters, but it isn’t that kind of book, in my opinion. Instead, I found myself hoping that some would stay on the right path and survive, while wishing I could push others off the path completely and be done with them! The characters did pull different emotions from me and that is very important when reading a book.
I do recommend this book to anyone who likes Stephen King. Porter’s writing style in this read is very similar to King’s and that was something I was not expecting! If you like books that bring out several emotions at once, creep you out so badly that you have to reach for the nearest light and check under the bed, and leave you feeling like you’ve run a marathon at the end, then this book is for you!
This book reminded me of the many horror movies I've seen. You know the type – a group of young adults take a road trip into the middle of nowhere and find themselves in a perilous situation in which the characters are killed off one by one in a variety of gruesome and creative ways. That's just fine, because this story fits a familiar mold that horror fans are comfortable with. Yes, we know from the beginning that a number of the characters will not survive but the suspense is in wondering who? And how? And that's what keeps the pages turning.
I sensed the author had to deal with the challenge of juggling a lot of characters – an important part of any horror story if you want to maximize the splatter. All the familiar players were present – the jocks, the Barbie dolls, the quiet brooding types. The question is, which ones will last longest, and why?
I enjoyed the death scenes. Each was satisfyingly gory, creepy and quite creative on the author's part. The consistent theme throughout the story is, “Reap what you sow” and there is a valuable lesson to be learned at the end for those who survive.
I read a similar book just before this one, and one seemed to follow the storyline of the first, so it was hard to judge. But as a horror story, it was pretty good. Kind of lost track of some of the characters, and had to backtrack once in awhile to get my bearings. But it was good, and the end made sense, which doesnt happen too often with this type of book.
I liked this one...just not loved it (like I'd hope). Good storyline, some characters I could have killed myself, and some characters I loved and cheered. Of course, I did cheer for some of them that didn't make it. Mrs. Porter is on my "have to read more from" list.
The writing was good and you can tell the author is talented. The characters were an interesting mix but I wish there had been more twists in the plot.
