Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

Rate this book
A beautiful new picture book with hand-stitched collage illustrations. Based on the rhyme, it tells the charming story of a mouse dreaming about the stars; he dreams of catching a twinkling star in his net, and keeping it as a pet; he dreams of flying off on a rocket, and gathering stardust in his pocket. The pictures and rhyming text work together, resulting in a delightful book for parents and children to share.

First off, this book is good, and I my not trying to say it's not. The illustrations are beautiful, and Toms's verses are mostly delightful. Also, at least in my edition, the pages are textured, which makes it fun to read (and feel) with toddlers.

But for years, I've been bothered by something: two of the verses don't work.

At first, I thought it was MY mistake. I would be singing this to my kid and then suddenly, I'm confused at how I fell off the musical path, and I'd think, "Wait, did I SKIP a line?" And I'd look back a page, furrow my brow, try to figure it out, and then finally throw up my hands and either just pick the song back up as best as I could or make up my own lines for the ending.

But I've done this enough times now that I can say with some authority: verses five and seven don't work.

So with the basic "Twinkle, Twinkle" song, you have a six-line verse with rhyme scheme AA BB CC. Toms follows this pattern for the first four of her own verses. Each starts with the words, "Twinkle, twinkle," and each has that same rhyme scheme. Then we get to verse 5:

Twinkle, twinkle little star
How I wonder what you are!
When the sky grows dark at night
I wish and wish with all my might
that you would look down on my house,
And grant one thing for this small mouse
I want to be a star like you
and see the world the way you do

What am I supposed to do with those extra two lines?

Verse six goes back to the old pattern: starts with "Twinkle, twinkle", has six lines with AA BB CC rhyming." And then you get to the seventh and final verse:

Twinkle twinkle little star
How I wonder what you are
There's so much more I'd like to say
Maybe we'll talk another day

How can you end right there? It leaves the song completely unresolved, and it's just so weird. It feels so wrong that I actually checked the page numbering to see if it was actually just a printing error that put pages in the wrong order. But no, they all go up sequentially from 1 to 27, so I don't think it's a printing error.

If you're reading the book and not singing it, it's okay; maybe you feel it a little in the rhythm of the words. But man, if you're singing it, you just have to make up a new couplet to add to the end. I usually just sing, "Twinkle, twinkle little star | how I wonder what you are" again, slowly, to finish it off.

I looked this up on goodreads to see if anyone else had commented on this. Not seeing any other comments... Am I really the only one who noticed this? IS it just a printing problem on my book? Am I missing the last couplet? What about verse five with the two extra lines - are those supposed to be part of a whole other verse that I'm missing? Really curious about this.

Anyway, it really is a lovely book otherwise; I love both the style of the artwork and the tone of the poetry. But I wonder about those messed up verses...

"Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" by Kate Toms.

In short, it's a beautiful book, a lullaby for kids, young and old. There is such serenity about it which is why I like it so much. Illustrations are really beautiful and the idea to do them as patchwork is absolutely fantastic.

Overall, definitely recommend it, it's a type of book you could introduce to your child at very early age, to develop their love for reading and listening. This is probably a great first book.

I am definitely glad it's part of my daughter's little library.

Awards the book has received (if any): n/a
Appropriate grade level(s): Pre k-2nd
Original summary: A variation on the traditional nursery rhyme,
Original review: This book does a great job of slipping in other languages, counting, manners and more. Super creative idea and interesting twist on the traditional song.
1-2 possible in-class uses:
1) Can be used in a read-aloud; students will enjoy the unexpected variation.
2) Students can add their own pages to the book to add even more variation.

This book is definitely an eye opener. I never read a Twinkle, Twinkle little star book, until now. It was so
Fascinating to the extent where I was shocked of the story and illustration the story I thought I was so familiar with, was actually about.

Definitely going to keep this at the front of my shelf to remind myself who and what are really the “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Stars!”

A great book to gain interest for students, first he pictures are beautiful, the added textures intrigue the kids, and the variation on the well known story changes everything. This book captivates kids from 2nd to kindergarten.

This book follows the others by Kate Toms, it follows the song and has extra parts added into it. The pictures are colorful and crafty. It adds in more rhyming parts to create a fun story.

Even though there are so many books based on nursery rhymes around this was a particuarly heart-filled one that seemed to be hinting at the human need for connection/inclusion (in the shape of a mouse) and have a sort of spirituality (non-specific) about it. Some readers might object to the reference to "saying prayers".

The illustrations are beautiful and really make the text. The text has a rhyme that mainly works

Such a lovely, warm read. My son received it as a 1st birthday present and I have bought it for numerous little ones ever since. Really useful to practice baby sign with, or to just lull your beautiful one to sleep.

Cute illustrations that take the classic children’s song, twinkle twinkle little star, and turn it into a rhyming story. Easy read with sections of predictable text. Recommended for children in kindergarten and up.

I choose this book because I needed a traditional tale. Twinkle Twinkle is a classic. This one had a little twist that made it entertaining. You could read this story in a day care to put the kids to sleep for nap time.

A perfect match in this book...a story or song that you can read over and over again with a child, and great illustrations.

Cute it's always good to read something different without getting away from the basic song.
