My husband watches a lot of the History Channel and anything to do with war. We're planning a trip to see some of the major Civil War sites so I thought this book would be interesting. It was. It is amazing to me that the soldiers had the time to write, had paper, had pencils, since they spent so much time moving from one place to another and in the worst weather conditions. There is something eloquent in these letters - maybe it's the old style of talking and the words they used. Very descriptive and emotional, especially when describing how much letters meant to them and telling about the friends they lost in the war. It is even more amazing that so much of the mail went through. And, then, it was terribly sad, when after reading a wonderful letter, to find out the soldier died shortly thereafter. War is awful! We need to learn to get along without it!
