LeRoy Eims served with The Navigators for over 50 years in a variety of ministries, including Director of U.S. Ministries, International Ministry Representative, and Director of Evangelism Worldwide. He broadened his ministry through the writing of 14 books, including the best-selling The Lost Art of Disciplemaking. His personal ministry continues on through the lives of his family, and through countless scores of people in harvest fields around the world who bear witness to his faithful labors with them.

Leroy Eims again does an excellent addressing leadership from a Biblical perspective (The Navigators continue to impress me). Eims follow the A.W. Pink writing style of including a lot a Scripture passages to back up his points so he gets five stars from me.

Highlights from the book

How to destroy your life:
1. Be a lazy sloth
2. Give yourself to a goal, work hard, and discover at the end that you gave yourself to the wrong goal
3. Become a dabbler and never really do anything.

He goes into the importance of leaders spending time grooming/discipling others in a one-on-one context. When the mentor/protege meet it should be a time that contains the following actions: Edify/Exhort/Comfort/Charge

God's Will
Eims addresses seeking God's will for our life. I appreciated when he mentions that we need to be patient. God has a plan for us, He will show us the way to go. Obviously, we cannot just sit around, but continually seek His Face through reading His Word and prayer. Also, he notes that it is important to learn about the ways God accomplishes His will-by understanding how He operates we can learn how we fit into the plan.
For example, many times I have prayed about way to get from Point A to Point B. Point B was a biblically justified waypoint and I had a several options for getting there. God ended up taking me a on a route that was completely off my "map." With typical hindsight 20/20 vision I am very thankful for the spiritual off-roading that occurred with God's methods as opposed to my conventional ideas.

Summary
Great book on discipleship and leadership. A combination of Scripture and "in the trenches" experience and wisdom make this book an invaluable resource for any Christian.

I love how the author examines the leadership qualities of some of the leaders from the Bible, such as, Moses, Ezra, Elijah, Gideon, Paul, etc!

This is a classic book on Leadership. In all honesty I believe the majority of the content applies to all Christians and not just Christian leaders. So, from that standpoint, the book would be very good to use in discipleship. I did find the chapter dealing with communication to be dated. It deals, in part, with sermon style presentations speaking to the reality a generation or more ago. The current generation is looking for something else in communication - something real, personal and fresh. So, I'd prefer to give this book 3.5 stars, but felt it unjust to round down to 3. So, 4 stars it is. A good book, if somewhat dated.

WOW, leadership literature is one thing but when you mix it with biblical insight it becomes even more powerful and effective. Of all the books I have read thus far, "Be the Leader You Were Meant To Be" has had the most impact on my life personally.

Really enjoyed reading this book. Lots of good practical insight with great Biblical support. Works really well in delivering it's message when reading a chapter then doing the discussion questions and exercising at the back. plan on reviewing this again and again and sharing with others.

This book is a great resource for anyone about to embark in any position of leadership in ministry or elsewhere. Gives a great perspective on developing leadership skills from the inside out rather than the other way around, which can easily be the tendency. You can't teach someone something that you yourself aren't at least committed to striving to learn along with them. Leadership is also an attitude, to lead is to serve. Jesus modeled that perfectly. "The Son of Man Came Not to Serve But to Serve and Give His Life A Ransom for Many", Matthew 20:28.

Although geared toward full-time ministerial leadership, this book has a lot of great leadership principles for lay leaders. If you can get past the awkward and sometimes droll writing style, there is a lot of solid advice in this book.
