Schonungslos seziert Ludiwg Thoma die gesellschaftlichen Zwänge in der bäuerlichen Welt des Bayerns der Prinzregentenzeit. Nach dem Tod seiner Frau will der Schormayerbauer den Hof eigentlich noch nicht übergeben, die Aussicht auf das Austragsdasein schreckt ihn, auch wenn die Kinder ihn drängen. Dabei steht er noch voll im Saft, die Stallmagd Zenzi lockt ihn, es kommt, wie es kommen muss, und das unheilvolle Los nimmt seinen Lauf.

Virtuose Dialoge machen aus einer geradlinigen und schlichten Geschichte ein Meisterwerk des psychologischen Realismus.
