Martha Joe, Nulato: A Biography

Rate this book
"It was real cold in the old days. Colder than it is now. We had reindeer parkies and rabbit skins. . . . I used to make rabbit skin rope and cover it with calico or thin blankets to keep the hair from falling off. It's warm. And rabbit skin mitts and socks. That way they don't feel the cold no matter how cold it is. I don't know how cold it was long time ago. They didn't have thermometers, but they did find out by the trees. When the trees get snowy frosty, it's cold. It means the trees are dressed warm. When it's frosty white like that they don't go out."
