Norman Vaughan recounts the story of his amazing life, which includes exploring Antarctica as part of Byrd's 1929 expedition, then returning 65 years later to climb Mount Vaughan, the polar peak named in his honor.
This is Norman’s second book of adventure, primarily covering his time after the Byrd Expedition. I met Norman a few times when he lived in Eagle River in his 80s and had some interesting conversations. We even supported his climb up Mt Vaughn in 1995. Anyone that takes a trip to Antarctica and climbs a mountain at 88 years old, deserves a lot of respect. He never gave up.
Doesn't live up to how amazing his other book is about his time in Antartica with Adm. Byrd. He still is a massive influence on my life based on previous story but I wish I felt similarly inspired by his whole story.
Great book for understanding a great but little known American Hero. I had met Norman several years ago and he generated in me an interest in arctic and antarctic exploration.
I met Norman while living in Alaska. I was a back country tour guide and wildlife interpreter in Denali National Park at the time. He is the only living hero i have ever met who was not my Dad. Truly remarkable inspiring individuals.
