A mother's worst nightmare...her daughter is kidnapped by her husband using the daughter as a hostage for his criminal life. The husband is caught by the police but the daughter is abandoned and gets lost in the New York Christmas shopping crowd. She is stalked by a pedifile. All ends well (?)
This was a wonderful short story, not at all what I am used to from Clark. It about a mom whose ex-husband kidnaps their daughter (Jamie, 4 1/2) and takes her along for a dangerous run as an international jewel thief, he uses her as a cover story, nothing more. When the father is arrested, it leaves Jamie alone in NY at Christmas. So what does she do? What does a 4 1/2 year old do and will someone find her before harm comes to her?
Her mother sees her picture in a magazine and heads for NY, gets the cops involved and the whole town full of cops, taxi drivers, bus drivers and so much more, are looking for the needle in a haystack.
The Lost Angel, Mary Higgins Clark, PB-B, @ 1989, 11/99. Selected by Literary Volunteers. From Anastasi Syndrome and Other Stories. The father kidnaps a four year old girl and uses her in his robberies. He is arrested and his girlfriend leaves the little girl to wander the streets of NY, while her mother is frantically searching for her. Very good, even the second time.
