The Raging Sea (Paperback) by Sonia O'Brien Kaitlyn's future looks perfect. Her boyfriend, Greg, is handsome, witty, and has his uncle's law practice practically in his back pocket. But when a tragic accident takes the life of someone close to her, it also takes away Kaitlyn's peace of mind. In an effort to comfort Kaitlyn, her best friend plans a Caribbean vacation. But relaxation soon gives way to intrigue and danger as their cruise ship is thrown into turmoil and they are forced to abandon ship. Kaitlyn and her friends join a young steward, Matthew, in a desperate attempt to survive. Thrown together by circumstances, Kaitlyn finds she is developing feelings for the attractive steward. But Matthew has just returned from a mission and has definite ideas about dating only Mormon girls. If she can find a way to survive, she knows she'll have to confront her feelings. Whatever she decides, her life will be changed forever.

I am embarassed to admit that I even read this one. May I never go on a cruise that catches fire, evacuate with severely burned legs that are both broken, jump into shark infested waters to save someone, get pulled out by someone who has a severely infected leg, not have any drinking water for four days, catch a sea bass with some thread attached to an earring, use a pocket knife secured to an ore with medical tape to fight off attacking great white sharks, only to have the rescue helicopter have to turn away at the last possible second, but survive because the rescue boat made it just seconds before the HUGE sea wave hit the boat, and then get baptized all because my sisters untimely car accident wasn't really my fault so that I can date my cruise director (who happens to be a mormon and will only date mormons...so glad that worked out) ever again. Did I mention fighting off the sharks with a pocket knife tied to an ore with medical tape...COME ON!

The Raging Sea by Sonia O'Brien

Kaitlyn Winters is in grief over the death of her sister from an accident and she feels guilty that she could've prevented it. Her best friends, Amber and Gracie decide to help her by taking her on a Caribbean Cruise. Before she knows it, her purse comes up missing and no one knows who took it. Within a few hours, a horrific storm brews, threatening to ruin their cruise, but that's not the worst, as the cruise liner is turned into turmoil and the passengers have to abandon ship, causing more confusion and
mayhem. The three friends and their few fellow passengers need to depend on each other to survive the ordeal at sea. Kaitlyn has feelings for Matthew Wright, their room steward, but she is not the right kind of girl for Matthew, as he doesn't date but LDS girls and she finds his religion too different from hers. If they survive their ordeal, she will have to confront her feelings about death, God and spiritual beliefs. This book has all the excitement of being lost at sea with nothing to eat or drink, but learning how to survive with what they each have, as they learn to use their ingenuity.to fight off sharks. I thoroughly enjoyed how the author brings the passengers together to help one another in their weakest hours and how some find strength they never had before to overcome their fears.

What a scarry thought--vacationing on a cruise ship and then it blows up and there's a huge tropical storm outside! The lengthy story of the characters living for days in the life boats was enough to make me feel like I was there among them waiting and hoping--even despair. The fact that the injuries were life-threatening was painful, and the little children crying broke my heart. It was heartfelt as relationships developed throughout the turmoil, and even better that they continued after their rescue.

Entertaining, intense, and sweet: I really enjoyed this book and had trouble putting it down. The characters are very likable and the friendships between them added a depth and sweetness to this book that surprised me. It's still quite exciting, but the author doesn't drop you after the action, she plays the characters out to a natural end that just feels right. Can't wait to read more of her books!

Not poorly written... an interesting story with likable characters. The back promises intrigue... other than a purse being stolen and a stowaway there isn't really any intrigue. I don't know, it was more of a 'surviving on the sea for four days and getting over a death in the family... plus a love story' kind of book. I expected there to be some intrigue behind the boiler blow-up or something. Kind of disappointed in that respect.

I read this book when it was originally published years ago. I came across it at the library and decided to reread it. When their cruise ship has a catastrophic accident the passengers are forced to evacuate onto life boats. An assortment of characters share two life boats and must work together to survive. I love the depth of characters in the story and became attached to several. This is a very good read. Very suspenseful.

again, i love this author. the book moves fast and you move with it. Tragedy sparks kaitlyn to blame herself and another tragedy and the meeting and observing of Matthew help her to look at the death of her sister for what it was. The second adventure/ tragedy is amazing and so real you can't read the words fast enough.

Great book! It was fast paced, full of action and was a sweet story all in one! It's a pretty quick read that I read in one night. It was pretty hard to put down. I loved the characters in the book and the friendship and love that they had for each other. This was the authors first book and I thought she did a great job!

I thought this was a really well written first novel. It had alot of action and it was difficult to find a stopping place while reading it. The characters had so much depth to them, and I loved how the friendships developed under such trying circumstances.

Great read - I've enjoyed the books I've read from this author. Don't, however, read this book if you're going on a cruise anytime soon! :)

This book was clean and fun. The plot got a little monotonous after a while and I was just ready for things to wrap up at the end, but still cute.

Not bad... Better written than some of the LDS fiction books I have read recently. The story was fairly transparent but still enjoyable.

This was cool. The happily ever after could have lasted a LITTLE longer though. I had to read the ending through twice and still wasn't quite satisfied!
