Now more than ever, organizations must recognize, assess and respond to all forms of risk that they face. Fundamentals of Risk Management, now in its second edition, provides a comprehensive introduction to the subject of commercial and business risk for anyone studying for a career in risk as well as a broad range of risk professionals. It examines the key components of risk management and its application with examples to demonstrate its benefit to organizations in the public and private sector.
The second edition has been completely updated to take into account the greater influence of ISO 31000, the emergence of Governance Risk and Compliance (GRC) and the wide use of the bow-tie method to illustrate risk management. In addition, there is now a chapter on the skills and competencies required by an effective risk manager.
Essential reading if you're studying for the IRM exams. Basically my work bible. Subject is Enterprise risk, focused on looking at the opportunity side of risk as well as the down side. Tackles tricky to explain to non risk professional subjects like risk appetite and the difference between appetite and tolerance. Easy to dip into and use as reference after the exams are a distant memory 😃
This is an interesting overview of risk management but it is long on theory and short on practice. I think this is one of the criticisms of the risk management industry. There's a gap between theory and practice.
My review is for the 5th edition, which I had to read for a certification I am taking for risk management. There's some good information here, but what really frustrated me when reading this is how unstructured the content is. There's no proper structure for each topic; information on a topic may be described in different chapters and you need to pick it out yourself. Concepts are often described in a "trail of thought" way. There was a lot of repetition littered across the chapters of the same sentences/concepts, and the same terminology/concept is often defined at least 3 times in the same chapter but in completely different ways. As a core reading material for my certification the quality is very disappointing.
A very interesting and detailed book about risk management. Useful for all those that have to manage risks. Strongly recommended. Many thanks to Netgalley and Kogan Page Ltd
Without doubt, this is a definitive guide to RIck Management and one that should be on the bookshelf of anyone devoted to this subject. As a manager with responsibilty for managing risk within my own domain, I also found the book to be of value in my workplace. This is a subject area that is constantly changing and this fifth edition has been updated for that purpose. This book will certainly have a place in my electronic bookshelf. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
