What happens in the ocean after dark? Use the magic flashlights on every page to reveal the hidden creatures in the ocean's depths! Each spread appears to be dark, but point the flashlight and watch brilliant aquatic life illustrations magically illuminate.
Readers of all ages will be amazed by this innovative paper technology -- no batteries necessary! Every spread features a different underwater animal, but it's the reader's job to locate the hidden creatures. Perfect for curious older readers, each page has a "Did you Know . . .?" section filled with amazing facts about ocean creatures and their habits.
This is a "Lightbeam Book". That means the book's illustrations are printed on plastic, with a black background. Between the two is a paper "flashlight" containing shades of white that the reader can move around. Items highlighted by this flashlight pop out. The text is adequate, but the focus here is the flashlight gimmick. Six ocean animals are briefly highlighted. There's a paragraph or two of informative text, a couple of facts, and then 7 animals you can look for with your magic flashlight. This will never last in a library and, frankly, kids will be prying the flashlights out. Still, it's kind of cool, and the fact that each pictures includes its own flashlight means that, even if you lose a few, you're still good. It would be a fun activity book to keep a child occupied.
This is one of the best ocean books that I have ever read! This book is really detailed in the ocean animals that it dives into! There is a super cool feature to this book which is that there is a interactive flashlight built into the book that you can use to look for animals in the ocean with a guide of what animals to find. This is one of my favorite books I have found on the ocean and if defiently one I will have in my classroom for students to explore and probably do a read aloud on!
This book has a very fun concept, using a "flashlight" to find hidden animals in pictures, but it is a non-fiction book with mainly facts about one featured animal per page, as opposed to a fiction story. It's still fun to play with, but is more suited for a child doing book report research than to read during story time to a group.
This is a really fun book! Different ocean creatures are in the dark on each page. The reader has a flashlight that comes with the book that illuminates the creatures swimming at night. Each page describes factual information about the creatures.
The 4 year old I read this book to loved it. She had so much fun discovered the creatures and asked to read it over & over again!
An interactive book, with a unique flashlight mechanism, where little ones can "shine" a light to find animals at night. Learn about animals who swim in the ocean at night when you are saying good-night.
Would also highly recommend this author's book, Moonlight Animals.
This book is very factual. If you were teaching children of the life in the sea that this book would be helpful. This book is also interactive and I believe the children would really enjoy that. This images are bright and colorful and full of fun.
I enjoyed the informational text in this book. However, I thought it was too long for Pre-K students and it might lose their attention. I did like how you could move the "magic light beam" to see the hidden animals.
Very cute book for kids, with included "flashlights" hidden inside the pages so children can move them around and find all the things they are searching for in the "underwater" pages.

This is an informational text in that it depicts the unique creatures of the ocean that we rarely get the chance to see and learn about. There are fun facts and Did you know...? facts that are appealing to all ages.
This could be integrated into a science lesson about aquatic life.
This nonfiction book about ocean life is chockful of facts about sea creatures in a fascinating new format. Each page features a darkened underwater view that is illuminated as the reader moves around what appears to be a beam of light. Although this innovative paper technology requires no batteries and very few moving parts, the results are spectacular. Reviewer 18
