Allan Combs is a consciousness researcher, neuropsychologist, and systems theorist. He considers his most significant work to be the development of a developmental/evolutionary model of the mind using concepts from systems science. Much of this was accomplished in collaboration with his friend and colleague Stanley Krippner. He is most widely known, however, for his collaboration with Ken Wilber on the Wilber-Combs lattice.

I recommend reading this book simultaneously with _Synchronicity: The Bridge Between Matter and Mind_ by F. David Peat. These books cover much of the same ground from slightly different perspectives. Peat is a trained physicist, who seems to have gone over to pushing a spiritual agenda, based on the apparent unity of cosmic substance. Combs is a Psychologist, whose website claims he is a professor of "transformative studies" in California, while Holland is an English prof (maybe just there to clean up Combs's prose). It is safe to say that all (except maybe Holland) have traveled somewhat outside the conventions of their fields to explore interdisciplinary, unorthodox subject. That, however, is what is required to discuss synchronicity - the point where folklore, physics, and psychology meet.

One reason to read the books together is to keep the BS-detector on. Peat will raise a skeptical eyebrow at some of Combs/Holland's physical speculations, while the Psychologist-English pair avoid some of Peat's historical inaccuracies. But the subject does require some suspension of disbelief to consider. The world does contain a surprising amount of "meaningful coincidence" - and it seems to be generated not least by the action of observation itself, which we find is no longer physically "impossible" but just rather odd. The universe may not be so mechanical as was once imagined, but more organic and complex than that model allows. And it may be that Jung was onto something after all, given Freud's almost complete fall from favor in the academic Psychological world.

One aspect I found especially interesting was the suggestion that attempts at quantifying ESP/psi abilities are themselves destructive to those powers. The task becomes redundant and uninteresting to the psychic, and thus they stop demonstrating success. To suggest that something is "beyond science," is, of course, blasphemy in modern society, but it may be that science needs to start catching up to its own ramifications. The days when scientists believed nearly everything was already known are long since past, and wilder and wilder theories have been bearing fruit.

Most of us have had something occur "by chance" that seemed nearly impossible to explain. If it had meaning for us, it may reflect the ways in which consciousness brings meaning into the the universe, both passively (through analysis) and actively (through the generation of synchronicity). This may mean that we are more powerful beings than we had previously imagined - a discovery entirely worthy of a physicist and a psychologist.

يؤمن الكاتب بأن لا إستقلال لأي شيئ وأن ما يحدث لا يمكن أن يكون عشوائياً أو نهباً للمصادفة، وأن حوادث الطبيعة التي تبدو عشوائية في الظاهر تشكل نسيجاً واحداً مشتركاً مع حوادث الحيوات البشرية وبصورة متنوعة، وعليه لا يحدث أي حادث على نحو مستقل ومنعزل، مدللاً على ذلك بعدة أمثلة كأن يحلم أحد ما بكارثة ما في مكان بعيد قبل أن تصله أخبار وقوعها . أو أن يجد ثلاثة أصدقاء أنهم دخلوا إلى المطعم ذاته مع أنهم يعيشون في أماكن متباعدة من مدينة كبيرة . أو أن يحط سرب من الغربان على منزل فيه شخص يحتضر ونباح كلاب يسمع من بعيد هذه المحاكاة التي يرمي إليها تدل على فعل التزامن الذي أراد ومن خلاله أن يرسم الفكرة الأسطورية أو الآلية العلمية لحدوثها مع إسهاب مفرط وكثيف
قسم العمل على أن يستمد الكتاب إسهاباته من خلال التزامن وشرحه بطريقة العلم بالربط بينهما وقسم يوضع تلك العلاقة التي بنيت على أساس الإسطورة ومن خلالها يعرج على أفكار الحضارات الغابرة كاليونانية الإغريقية وفكرة الإستنباطات التي إرتأوها من الإله هرمس ...الخ
حيث أنه ،كما جاء في الكتاب يقول: يسود العامل التاريخي في الحيوات الدينية التي تحياها غالبية البشرية "متحجرة العقل"، أو المشغولة جداً ،أو غير الموهوبة ،بكل بساطة .وكل ما تبلغه تجربتهم يبقي في النطاق العام،ويمكن دراسته تاريخياً.
أما في الأزمات الروحية وفي أفهام الشخصيات " مرهفة العقل" من ذوي الميول الصوفية ،فإن العامل اللاتاريخي هو الذي يسود....ومخيال التقليد المحلي-مهما بلغ من تطور رفيع-هو بالنسبة لهم مجرد وسيلة ،كافية إلى هذا الحد أو ذاك،لجعل تجربة نابعة من مكان أبعد من أن يطاله ذلك المخيال.فالتجربة الدينية هي ،في التحليل النهائي،نفسانية وعفوية بالمعنى العميق، إنها تتحرك ضمن الظروف التاريخية فتساعد هذه الظروف أو تعيقها.

هناك قصص ظريفة وردت في الكتاب وتمت قراءتها في سياق التزامن مما يعطي نفسا شاعريا في كثير من الأحيان.

قبل أن أبدأ قراءة هذا الكتاب بدقيقة كنت أكلم نفسي بصوت عالي واذكر الأسئلة الثلاثة التي أرقت البشرية وهي من نحن؟ ولماذا أتينا ؟ وإلى أين المصير ؟ وبمجرد ما فتحت الكتاب وجدت الأسئلة مسطرة في مقدمته ، فهل كان ذلك صدفة أم تزامن ؟

يقول "كارل يونغ" إن الخلفية المشتركة التي تجمع بين الفيزياء المجهرية وعلم نفس الأعماق هي قوة باطنية محايدة وهذه الخلفية النفسية الفيزيائية المتعالية تقابل عالماً كامناً تكون جميع تلك الشروط التي تحدد شكل الظواهر التجريبية متضمنة في هذه الخلفية، إن الروابط التي تخلقها المجالات الكهرومغناطيسية والكمومية بين الحوادث هي روابط واقعية ، وهي المجال psi الذي نتصل عبره مع الآخرين سواء كنا نعي ذلك أم لا.

كان شائعاً أن يحلم أحدهم بحصول كارثة فتحصل خلال أيام ، مثل هذه التوافقات تنطوي على ضروب من التجاوب المتبادل تسري عبر الطبيعة وعبر النفس البشرية وتشد كلاً من الواقع الخارجي والداخلي إلى نماذج مشتركة ذات معنى ، جاءت فيزياء الميكانيكا بمفاهيم صلبة لتفسير الكون بالمعادلات السببية وأطاحت بما يحسه الفرد بانتماء لهذا الكون ، وصار البشر مجموعة من الذرات الصلبة التي لا تقبل القسمة ، وفي مثل هذه الرؤية تكون الحوادث الباراسايكلوجية كالتخاطر والمعرفة المسبقة مستحيلة علميا ، إلى أن جاءت الفيزياء الجديدة بمبادئ النسبية والكم و اللايقين لتقلب مفاهيم الفيزياء مجددا وتكون أكثر انسجاما مع مفهوم التزامن الذي يجعل العالم يعبر عن إبداعه من خلال التوافقات التزامنية ، وهناك من يعتقد أن الأرض ككل تبدي الخصائص التي تبديها عضوية حية وهذا ما يسمى بفرضية "غايا".

بعض التوافقات قد يشوبها شيء من "عقدة غورديوس" ، وهي عقدة شدها ملك "فريجيا" زاعما أنه لن يحلها إلا سيد آسيا المقبل ، فجاء الاسكندر وقطعها بسيفه فصار هذا الاسم يطلق على مشكلة عويصة ، فهذه التوافقات قد تكون ملتفة معا فلا نعلم من أين تبدأ ولا إلى أين تنتهي ، وهناك تجارب شخصية تتوافق مع فكرة إن الأفكار يمكنها أن تزيد من احتمال حصول الحادث العلمي الموافق مهما بدا هذا الحادث بعيد الاحتمال ، ويبدو أن ثمة صلة بين التزامن والتأمل ، فكلما تعمقت حالة التأمل تحدث التوافقات المتزامنة بتكرار أكبر ، وهذا -حسب المؤلف- يشمل التأمل العميق و الصلاة وهي حالة تترافق مع تماسك تجاوبي في نظم تخطيط الدماغ الكهربائي وهذا هو ما يسمى طنين الدماغ الصامت ، واعتقد "كارل يانغ" أن التزامن يعكس مستوى من مستويات الواقع ويشكل أساسا مشتركا لكل من الوجود الذهني والوجود المادي ، حين تصمت الأصوات التي يضج بها العقل يكون بوسع الأنماط البدائية كالتزامن أن تتقدم لتعبر.

مع تمكن الإنسان من شطر الذرة راح يونغ يتساءل ما إذا كان ذلك ينطوي على استعارة تطال النفس البشرية التي يمكن أن تتحرر طاقاتها في ظروف ملائمة ، يقول الصوفي محمود الشبستري ( الكون انطوى في جناح بعوضة ، ولو تحركت ذرة من مكانها لانقلب الكون في الحال ).

كل منا يعيش حالات درامية من التزامن من حين لآخر ، وإن انتباه المرء المنتظم إلى حياته الداخلية غالباً ما يتيح لهذه السيرورات الصغرى أن تبرز وتوضح ، ثم قد تسير في مسار طبيعي وتبدذ ذاتها أو لتشكل مع السيرورات المتضافرة ثيمة كبرى في حياة المرء ، وحين تختار أن تسعى وراء نعيمك وتختار خيارات قائمة على احساس داخلي فإنه غالبا تحس بأيد خفية و فرص غير منتظرة ومنابع غير متوقعة ، هذا هو التزامن في خدمة التفردن، إنه تأثير الذات في عالم الشؤون البشرية ، المثير أن مسحا ل٢٨ حادث من حوادث سكة الحديد بين عامي ٥٠و٥٥ كشف أن عدد مستقلي القطار في أيام الحوادث كل أقل من نفس الأيام في الفترات السابقة.

Skeptics, take it for what you will, but I had a synchronicity occur while reading this book.

Halfway through the text, I went to visit my brother, and was telling him about synchronicity. How, for me, they often occur when a customer comes into my store. The customer talks about a random subject, such as burning themselves on a curling iron or quoting a Bible passage. Then, when they leave, I return to whatever unrelated book I'm reading, only discover the next sentence mentions "curling iron" or the next page mentions the exact Bible passage (from Job in that case).

While I'm telling my brother this, he's watching a video on YouTube that introduces a new character to a video game, Smash Bros. Ultimate. This character, called the Joker, wears a mask. When removed, he yells "Persona!", and a shadow monster appears behind him.

I leave, and return to reading the book. On page 105, 1st edition, it details Carl Jung and his terms, shadow (meaning our (sometimes) hidden self), persona (our outward self we show the world, named after "the masks worn by actors in ancient Greek dramas"), and how the "Trickster acts on behalf of an unconscious structure known as the shadow".

When I return to my brother's house the next day (04/17/19) to tell him about it, he is busy attempting to download the Joker character.

If you are sick and tired of Freud like I am, then you should embrace a new psychoanalytical perspective. This book is based on Jung's idea of "synchronicity," or the idea that things happen for not only a reason, but are revealed through particular symbols that the human brain coordinates. Once you read this book, you'll start to notice all of the synchronic moments in your life-- it's really fascinating!!

Starting this book is like wrapping myself up in a warm blanket. I've forgotten how much I used to revel in the inter-connectedness of things. And who doesn't love a good Trickster myth?
The science is thin, but the theory is seductive. If you are looking for where Physics meets your belief system, this is a good place to start.

This book went over theories such as the holographic universe and other quantum physics ideas that align with synchronicity (meaningful coincidences). The trickster archetype was brought in as relating to synchronicity, unpredictability, and the union of opposites.

If you have the habit of reading books. Suddenly from nowhere some books will surprise with the presentation with utmost dedication. 
The Authors worked on the concept called Coincidence and made an effort to prove through Science, Myth and Tricksters.
Every heading was precisely discussed and presented neatly for the reader to understand.I have read a few on the topic of Synchronicity but this book can take you to another level.
Very entertaining and like walking through the woods and who knows what surprises you get..

I find synchronicity fascinating… it’s always been evidence to me that something bigger than me is working throughout the universe (God). I’m not sure you can ever really explain it, but this book makes a good effort. The science behind it (quantum physics) was often over my head. I especially appreciated the sections on Jung and mythology.

The book starts with a discussion on the impacts the discoveries Newton and Galileo had on society at large, but how little quantum physics had. Quantum physics is discussed, showing us how action can take place at a distance and what we think of constants are only probabilities. It then discusses psychology of the unconscious and Jung’s theories on synchronicity and the psyche and tries to tie these back to quantum physics. Several classic examples Jung gave on synchronicity are repeated (plum pudding and beetle). Synchronicity is defined as meaningful coincidences, where one’s subjective and objective worlds snap together unexpectedly and inexplicably.

The book then goes to discuss the “Trickester” archetype, as represented by Hermes, Eshu and other figures. The psychological phenomena such as slips of the tongue, accidents, and humor are explained to be aspects of the trickster within our unconscious. These are often course corrections for one’s life, as a balancing between the conscious and the unconscious though play. Recognizing and understanding these are key to one’s fulfillment.

The book was thoroughly researched and I did enjoy it. The argument of explaining synchronicity through quantum mechanics seemed thin to me. It was kind of like saying quantum mechanics allows stuff we don’t understand, we don’t understand synchronicity, therefore quantum mechanics explains synchronicity. However, the cause isn’t really relevant to the reality of the phenomenon.

I read this along with David F. Peat’s book on synchronicity in college. My library had both. This one goes into some detail on the trickster character that the other one doesn’t.
Synchronicity used to be dismissed as pseudoscience quick, and unworthy of being talked about, until recently, where in a craving for creativity, people try to use formerly New Age and spiritual concepts, including coincidences and language relying on overly complicated pseudoscientific explanations, in a lowbrow humor type of way to appear original.

Another short-yet-dense book. The subject and approach are fascinating, but it's a little too close to new age thinking to buy into. They seem to be trying to stay on the academic side of the line for most of the book but it also seems clear the authors want to embrace the mystical side of things. In spite of that, the book presents a useful overview and study of the subject as it applies to myth and science throughout history. It's good food for thought in terms of dreaming up fictional stories that could incorporate some of these concepts.
